T all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, Fonns'r H. ANDER- soN and ELMonn MCCLINTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Clarksville, in the county of Red River and State of Texas, have invented new and useful improvements in Mattresses, of whichthe following isa specification.
rlhis invention relates to mattresses and more particularly the pattern of the blank from which the casing is made and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object' of the invention is to provide a mattress of simple and durable structure and of a pliable nature. One which will lie fiat upon a bed spring or other approximately horizontal support and one which may be readily rolled or folded when not in use. Y
The blank of the casing comprises a single piece of material having a broad end portion which is equivalent in length to the length of the mattress. rlfhe said broad end portion is provided at its opposite side with incisions leading in at right angles to the edges thereof and which terminate at their inner ends in alincment with the edges of the narrow portion'of the blank. When the blank is formed up the narrower portion is extended over the broad portion and the edges of the narrow portion are secured to the edges of the broad portion and along the said incisions after the material between the said incisions has been bent up approximately at a right angle to a plane in which the intermediate part of the broad portion lies.
In the accompanying drawing z-Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the mattress is formed. Figures 2, 3, and i are detailed views of the features of the mattress.
The blank from which the mattress casing is formed is shown in plan in Fig. 1 and the said blank includes a relatively broad portion 1 and a relatively narrow portion 2. The broad portion 1 is of the same length as that of the mattress and the narrow portion 2 is somewhat longer than the broad portion 1. The portion 1 is provided at its side edges with incisions 8 which extend into the material at right angles to the edges of the.
said broad portion and the inner ends of the said incisions terminate in lines which lie in alinement with the side edges of the narrow portion 2.
When the body of the mattress is formed up the material between the incisions 3 is bent up at right angles to the plane of the body portion of the broader part 1 and the narrow portion 2 is extended over the said broad portion 1. In order to facilitate the description of the structure the material which lies between the incisions is referred to as the tongues. When the narrow portion 2 is extended over the broad portion 1, the edges of the narrow portion 2 which are adjacent the edges of the innermost tongues l are sewed to the edges of the tongue thereby providing a pocket which is filled with a suitable stuiiing 5 of hair, cotton or other appropriate material. As each succeeding pocket is lled with the material, a line of stitching is run as at 6 through the narrow portion 2 and the broad portion 1 whereby the narrow portion 2 is secured to the broad portion 1 and the material in the pocket is eiectually confined. This method of attaching the parts is observed throughout all of the tongues 4 whereby the said tongues eventually constitute the end walls of the pockets which retain the stuffing material. The extreme outer edge of the narrow portion 2 is secured to the eXtreme outer edge of the broad portion 1 and thus the structure of the mattress is completed. Thus it will be seen that when the mattress is completed it is composed of a series of sections and double walls of the casing material are interposed between the said sections and the said double walls are secured at their bends or folds to the intermediate portion of the broad part 1 of the mattress blank. Furthermore it will be seen that in the formation of the casing all of the material of the blank is utilized and there is no waste inasmuch as the incisions 3 are at true right angles to the longer edges of the broad portion 1 of the blank. Again it will be observed that the mattress sections are rectangular in transverse section and consequently they fit squarely against each other at their adjacent side and render the mattress smooth and level when it is placed upon a bed spring or other approximately horizontal support.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A mattress comprising a blank of a single piece of material, said blank having a broad end portion and a narrow end portion, the broad end portion being equal in length to the length of the mattress, the said broad end portion having at its opposite side incisions leading in from its edges and terminating at their inner ends in lines which lie in alnenient with the longer edges of the narrow portion, said incisions being disposed at right angles to the longer edges of the broad portion, the material between the said incisions 'constituting tongues which arebent up at right angles to the intermedite part of the broad portion and the narrow portion being extended over the broad portion and.
secured at its edges to the edgesrof the said 15 tongues and stitching passing through the narrower portion and the broad portion at the inner ends of the tongues and extending transversely across the broad portion and filling material located in the compartments 20 FOREST H.
