FISHER, a citizen of the United States, andY resident of' Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of VVisconsimhaveinvented; certain new andl useful Improvements in Smoke-Consuming Devices for Locomotives, and do lhereby declare thattliefollowing is a full, clear,- andf4 exact description thereof.
The present invention relates to new and usefulA improvements in smoke consuming devices for furnaces, `and is more particularly directedv to. that type of' smokeA consuming device for `use on'railway locomosmoke and gases back through thefi're-box. A common disadvantage encountered 1n connection `with ,smoke-consuming? devices of .the present nature, is that properl provision ffor the ultimate disposition of the gases under desired conditions is not had, and it, is therefore primarily the `object of the present inventionto provide a positive means for the Vescape of` a certain amount of the gases from the furnace so that a sufli- ,cient supply of air maybe had in the place thereof to. promote proper combustion.
Itis wellknown'that a commingling of steam from the exhaust of the pistons with the smoke Vwill reducel the objectionable qualities of the smoke, andA itv is more speciically an object of the invention to `permit the limited quantity of smoke above noted to escape with` the steam in such proportion as` to be properly commingled` therewith to Ireduce its objectionable features.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanyingdrawings, 5 designates generally the shell of the locomotiveengine, in the front end of which is formed the usual .smoke chamber between the frontV wall 6 of the boiler and the front wall of the shell, and the usual gas flues 7 extend from the iire-looX portion Siof the shell to this cha-mber. The usual steam exhaust pipe 9 extends upwardly through this chamber in alinement with the smoke stack, 10 thereof. The foregoing structure is conventional.
j To provide for conveying the combustion gases back to the fire-box, a pair of pipes 1l communicate with the front bulged end of the shell, las shown more particularly in Fig. 2, and extend backwardly along the sides of the shell to points adjacent its rear end, from whence the pipes are downwardly olfset to dispose their rear end portions adjacent the level of the grate and these rear end portions are provided each with a series of, outlet pipe sections 12 which communicate with andsupport oppositearms of a rectangularpipe frame 13, and the other drical wall 16 is disposed in the chamber and gases.

For providing `a forced draft of the gases, a shaft 18 is journaled axially in the chamber, preferably by suitablek connection with the front wall of they chamber and the pipe structure 9, and this shaft carries a fan 19 and is driven throughV the medium of a steam turbine 2O disposed in the chamberand suitably geared to the said shaft, this turbine being driven by steam conveyed from the usual nigger head 21 of the engine through a suitable pipe 22 therethrough, this pipe being provided witli a valve 23 whereby the operation ofthe turbine may be controlled. Connecting the outer ends of the blades of the fan 19 Y is an annular plate 24 and this plate slides in and vcloses an annular slot 25 formed in the cylindrical wall 16, and is provided adj acentthe center of each blade with a passage 26, Y Each blade is provided in its working f ac'e with a longitudinal groove27 communieating at its outer end with a respective passage 26 and having one side inset to form a pocket, and further provided at its other side with a projecting flange 28 which serves to deflect the gases into the groove. Thus upon rotation of the fan a certain amount of the` gases will be caught in the grooves of the fan blades and projected into the annular chamber portion and will mix with the exhaust steam of the engine, and pass outwardly through the smoke-stack, whereby a means is provided for an eventual elimination of the combustion gases, the proportion of gas which passes out in this manner being suchl as to comniingle properly with the exhaust steam of the engine so as to reduce the objectionable features of the gas, and a control of the amount of gas thus passing from the smoke-stacklis had through the control of the fan drive means. In certain instances it may be desired to procure a further escape of combustion gases through the smoke-stack, and to accommodate such instances the pipe 9 within the cylindrical wall 16 is provided with series of slots 29 Whichfarenormally covered by sleeves 30 and these sleeves may be slid to expose the slotv and thus permit escape of combustion Inasmucli as any means for procuring movement of the sleeves to uncovering position may be had, no means isspecifically shown.
1 YThe gases passing backwardly through the pipes llrpossess exceedingly great heat, and this feature is utilized in procuring a heatingof the injector pipe which. is shown in the drawings as comprising a rear section 31 extendingforwardly from thev usual injector control mechanism 32, and a forward sectionV 33 connected with theforward end of the boiler. The adjacent ends of these sections are passed into the adjacent gas pipe 11, and are provided within the pipe with head chambers 34 which are connected by series ol water tubes 35, to present a maximum heating surface.

1. A smoke consuming device for furnaces including a fire box and a gas chamber, comprising a duct connecting said re box and gas chamber to form a circuit for the gases, said chamber being provided with an annular opening, a fan inthe chamber, and an annular plate carried by the ends of the fan blades and closing said opening and provided with openings at the ends of the fan blades.
2. A'smoke consuming device for furnaces including a fire box and a gas chamber, comprising a duct connecting said fire box and gas chamber to forma circuit for the` gases,
blades, and said blades being provided with` longitudinal pocket grooves in alinement with respective plate apertures.
3. A smoke consuming device for locomotive4 engines comprising the combination with an ,engine shell including a fire-box portion and a gas chamber at its forward Y end, of said chamber being divided into'sections, a smoke-stack communicating with one of vthe sections, a steam exhaust duct communicating with said section, .the combustion gases from the fire-box communicating with the other section, a duct connecting saidother section with the lire-box, means for permitting escape of a limited amount of gas` from the lastl specified section to the first, said steam duct passing through the second specified section and having apertures communicating therewith, and means for closing said apertures. j Y
