GHRISTOF ZACHARIAS, ()F VIENNA, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
SMOKE-CONSUMING FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,451, dated April 10, 1883,
Application filed November 22, 1 882. (No model.) Patented in Austria-Hungary September 7, 1882, No. 22,035 and No. 35,597; in Germany October 25, 1882; in England November 6, 1882, No. 5,290; in Belgium November 15, 1882, No. 59,374, and in France January lti, 1883, No. 151,711.
Be it known that I, OHRrsToF ZAGHARIAS,
, engineer, a subject of the Emperor of Austria,
- closed in the tire-bridge.
residing at the city of Vienna, in the Austro- Hungarian Empire, have inven tcd certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Consuming Furnaces and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, a-nd exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to the class of smoke-consuming furnaces which introduce fresh airjust above the fuel; and the object of this invention is to provide a more efi'ective and perfect apparatus than any heretofore used, that may be applicable to all classes of furnaces for the boilers of locomotives and marine and stationary engines, whatever may be their construction, and whatever form of fire-grate maybe employed; and the invention consists of the improved smoke-consuming apparatus herein described.
In the accompanying drawings this apparatus is represented in the following manner:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a furnace provided with it, and Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same. The other figures show details of the apparatus, viz: Fig. 3' is a side elevation of the left air-supplying flue. Fig. 4. is a top view of the same. Fig. 5 is a front view of the air-chamber that is in- Fig. 6 is a vertical cross-section through the-center of this chamber. Fig. 7 is a top view of the whole apparatus detached from the masonry of the furmace; and Fig. 8 is a cross-section of the same, taken on the line w y of Fig. 7.
The apparatus consists First Of two flues, A A, whichserve the purpose of air-supplyin g canals, and are provided at their front ends, near the tire-box door, with regulators O O, to regulate theadmission of air. For this latter purpose the sides of the cylindrical boxes of these regulators are curved, and sectors 11 b, when turned by means of the handles a a, close more or less, as desired,.the openings of the regulatorboxes. These air-supplying flues are provided with air-blast openings or slits c 0 near their rear ends, with coupling-boxes e eon the sides facing the fire-bridge, with the coupling-boxes M on theirupper ends, and with tight-fitting cleaning-doors l 1 directly below the air-openings o c. These air-supplying canals or fiues A A are'located along the sides of the fire-boxin such a manner that the two air-blast openings face one another in horizontal position sufficiently high above the fire-grate not to be clogged by the fuel.
Second. Of the air-chamber B, forming in 7 whole or in part the fire'bridge, and having its two short shoulder-tubes h h reposing in the coupling-boxes e e of the two air-supplying fines A A. This air-chamber is likewise provided at its front side with an air-blast openingor slit, g, opening above the fire-grate at the same level as the openings 0 c. This airchamber also has underneath a close-fitting cleaning-door, K.
Third. Oftheconnectingair-passageD,crossing the flue above the fire-bridge, and narrowing the flue consequently by so doing in a manner favorable to more perfect combustion. Its two branches f f rest in the couplingboxesi t'of the air-supplying canals, thus uniting the latter, and its lower face has an airblast opening or slit, m, the edges of which are extended in the form of lips inclined toward the fire-box.
These three above-enumerated component" parts are most advantageously manufactured of cast-iron, and incased in whole or in part in the fire-brick or walls of the furnace-chamber.
Instead of providing but one air-blast outlet or slit in each air-supplying flue A and the air-chamber B, several slits may be used, placed side'by side, or one over another; or the openings may be round, with nozzle mouthpieces.
The operation of this smoke-consumin g apparatus is as follows: Durin g the firing of the furnace the two'regulators G 0 remain closed until the fuel is thoroughly ignited and the sides of the fire-box and the tire-bridge are well heated. Then the regulators are opened, as far as desired, by turning the crank-arms a a. The atmospheric air passes from the ashpit through the regulators into theflues A A. from whence it flows into the air-chamber B and connecting-flue D, and finally issues in a greatly-heated state through openin e, c, y, and or into the flame, supplying the latter with a suflieient quantity of oxygen to burn to carbonic acid the carbonic oxide and the fine soot of which smoke is principally composed. By this arrangement the combustion becomes exceedingly active and complete, and the amount of fuel therefor consumed is considerably reduced.
The cleaning-doors Z Z and K are used to clean the apparatus from ashes and dirt that may collect in the fines, and from particles of coal that may fall in through the openings 0 c and 9 when fresh coal is added, or when the fire is raked. When the furnace is in ,use the cleaning-doorsmust be kept carefully closed.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to provide boiler-furnaces with longitudinal lines running along the fire-chamber for supplying perforated bridges with heated atmospheric air, said air escaping into the furnace-flue or fire'chamber for consuming the smoke.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In ahoiler-furnace, the combination of the longitudinal air-heating tines A, having side openings, 0, the rear transverse flue, B, having front opening, 9, and the curved fine D, connected with the rear ends of the side flues, and having a bottom opening, in, with the tirechamber, ash-pit, and boiler, ali constructed and arranged substantially as herein set forth.
2. Thecombinatiou of the side flues,A, having necks c and i, the transverse flue B, having necks ii, and the curved conneetingflue I), provided with ends fitted over the necks 'i, with the fire-chamber, ash-pit, and boiler, substantially as herein set forth.
3. The combination of the side fines, A, having the EllI'fidllllSSlOll regulators O b, openings 0, and doors I, with the transverse flue B and curved connecting-flue D, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I ai'fix my signature in presence of two witnesses. 4
