UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILFBED JOHN DREY, F CARLISLE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF 'IlO EDWARD J'. WILKS, 0F CARLISLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
AND METHOD OF APPLYING THE Patented Dec. 19, 1916.
Application filed March 22, 1916. Serial No. 85,821.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILFRED J. DREY, a
v citizen of the United States, residing at Carlisle, in the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Coverings for the Heels of Shoes and Meth- Ode of Applying the Same, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to shoes and especially to that style of shoes having the heels covered with leather or other fabric of a corresponding or contrasting color to that of the shoe upper.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a heel covering which may be attached to the heel after the latter has been fastened to the shoe, and which may be taken off for repair without necessitating the removal or separation of the heel from the shoe.
Heretofore, the covering for the heel has been either sewed to the upper or otherwise secured thereto or secured to the completed heel before theheel is attached, and when the covering is torn or disfigured, it has been necessary to take off the heel before the old covering can be taken off and a new one substituted.
According to the present invention, the covering for the heel may be attached and removed from the heel without disturbing the connection between the heel and upper or body of the finished shoe, so that the-substitution'of a new covering for an old one may be done in much less time and at less expense than heretofore.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings which constitute part, of this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a side-elevation of a shoe having a heel covering applied according to the present invention. Fig. 2 is aside elevation of a heel drawn to a larger scale and shown as it appears after it has been secured to the upper or body of the shoe but before the covering has been placed over it. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a heel with the covering andtop lift shown in sections. Fig. 4 is a section on the line IV-IV of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the heel with the covering and top lift shown in sections. Fig. 6 is a detailed view of the heel covering as it appears when formed from a flat piece of leather or other material and before it is bent or folded to conform to the heel, and Fig. 7 is a detailed view showing the groove across the breast of the heel in which the tying means is housed or concealed.
The shoe 1 may have its sole 2 and heel 3 attached to its upper 4 in any known manner, but instead of having the covering 5 for the heel permanently secured to the upper or otherwise fastened between the heel and upper so that it is necessary to attach said covering before the heel is secured to the upper, said covering is detachably fastened to the heel after the latter is secured.
to the upper. As shown in Fig. 6, the covering 5 is cut from a flat piece of leather or other material in segmental form. Flexible tying means 6, such as a piece of wire or cord, is secured along the upper edge of the covering, preferably by being incased 'in a fold 7 of the material. Said fold or casing 7 is co-extensive' with the upper edge of the heel 3 and terminates short of the ends of the covering- 5, leaving end portions 8 to be flolded over the inner face of breast of the When the casing 5 is applied, the tying I means 6 is drawn tightly around the upper edge of the heel so as to lie in the groove 9, Fig. 2, between the heel and upper of the shoe. The end portions of said tying means which extend beyond the casing 7 are passed down through notches 10, Figs. 2 and 3, in the sole just in front of the breast of the heel, and are then passed across the heel breast and secured together in any suitable manner. These end portions of the t ing means 6 are concealed in a groove 11, i 3'and 7, at the junction of the upper edge of the breast of the heel with the sole. The body portion of the covering 5 is preferabl lued to the heel so as to make a. smoot ish and the end portions 8 of the covering are glued or otherwise fastened to the breast of the heel, as shown in Fig. 4e, and
the lower edge of said covering is turned f in upon the bottom of the heel as at 14 in Wise securing a. piece 13 of material similar to the covering over the breast of the heel so as to cover the turned in end portions 8 of the covering 5,- and by attaching the top lift 12 so as to cover the turned in portioiis 14 of the covering at the bottom of the heel. The upper edge portions of parts 8 of the covering which extend beyond the ends of the casing 7 may be so disposed as to cover the notches 10 as illustrated in Fig. 7, and theupper edge of the piece 13 is utilized for covering the groove 11 so that the con- ,nected end portions of the tying means 6 will be concealed.
It is evident from the above explanation of the manner of attaching the covering to the heel that said covering may be removed When repair is necessary, and a new covering applied Without separating the heel 3 from the upper or body portion 4.- of the shoe.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The method of securing a covering to the heelrof a shoe, after said heel is permanently attached to the shoe, which consists in detachably securing the upper edge of the covering in the groove between the heel and the upper and the body of the covering to the heel.
2. The method of securing a covering to the heel of a shoe after said heel is permanently attached which consists in detachably securing the upper edge of the covering in the, groove between the heel and the upper, folding the lower edge of the covering in upon the bottom of the heel, and attaching a top lift to cover said folded portions.
3. The method of securin. a covering to the heel of a shoe after saic heel is perina nently attached, which consists in detach ably tying the upper edge of the covering around the top of the heel in the groove between the heel and the upper, folding the lower edge portion of the covering in upon the bottom of the heel, and attaching a top lift to cover said folded portions.
4:- The method. of securing a covering to the heel of a shoe after said heel is permanently attached, which consists in detachably tying the upper edge of the covering around the top of the heel, the tying means being arranged in the groove between the heel and upper and having its ends secured together on the breast of the heel, folding the end portion of the covering upon the breast of the heel and the lower edge portion of said cover on the bottom of the heel, covering the connected ends of the tying means and the folds of the covering on the breast of the heel by another piece of covering ,material, and coverin the turned in por 1ltiptns at the bottom or the heel with a top 5. The method of securing a covering to the heel of a shoe after said heel is pern1anently attached, which consists in detachably securing the upper edge of a piece of cogveifing material around the sides and rear portion of the heel with folds on the breast and bottom of the heel, fastening a separate piece of covering material over the breast of the heel to cover the folds of the other piece thereon, and securing a top lift over the folds of the first piece of covering material on the bottom of the heel.
