' 6 Claims. (Cl. 36-'19.5)
This invention relates to shoes and more particularly to shoes of the so-called slip lasted platform type. 4
There are two basic types of slip lasted platform shoes presently being manufactured. One is known as a platform shoe with an inside heel. and the other a full platform with' an outside heel. In the first construction, the upper complete with insole, is formed anda skirt of heel covering material isattached to the upper material about the heel area. A wooden platform type heel is inserted in position and -fits smoothly within the cover material. The bottom edges of the covering material are brought under the heel and secured, and the full sole is attached. This is a relatively simple procedure. The
second type is more complicated but results in a rn'ore desirable finished product. In 'this form, material 'is attached to the upper as before, but is brought, under the platform and secured to form a' platform cove-r extending completely around the shoe in the area ofthe platform. A wooden heel is covered with desired material and the covered heel attached to the platform.v The outer sole is then athxed. This construction permits the line of the platform With its graceful arch to be emphasized, and offers greater possibilities for color contrasts and other design effects. p
The principal purpose of the present invention is to provide shoe construction whichwill give the appearance, and afford the design possibilities-of the outside heel type shoe. hi i g sc p ibl t formation y n id he techniques and at approximately inside heel costs.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide a slip lasted shoe with an inside heel having the appearance of a full platform shoe with outside heel.
Another object is to provide such a shoe construction which will be applicable to open or closed heel styles.
Still another object is the provision of a heel so constructed as to receive heel-covering material in a manher to simultate a division between one part of the heel and another.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent from the following description of practical embodiments thereof when taken in conjunction with the drawings which accompany, and form part of, this specification.

Figure 1 is a side view of a shoe constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention, parts being shown in section to show interior structure;
Figure 2 is a vertical section through the heel portion of the shoe, taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the heel used in the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 and 2;
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 1, showing a slightly modified structure;
Figure 5 is a vertical section on the line 55 of Figure 4;
Figure 6 is a side view of another modified structure;
Figure 7 is a vertical section on the line 7--7 of Figure 6;
Figure 8 is a side view of still another structural arrangement;
. p '2 a 7 Figure 9 is a vertical section taken on the line 9-9 of Figure 8., and
Figure 10 is a partial vertical section taken on the line 10--10 of Figure 1, illustrating the manner in which the upper, insole and heel cover are joined;
In general, the invention concerns a slip lasted platform type shoe having an inside heel construction so' modified by the use of a two-part cover as to give the. appearance of a full platform'outside'he'el construction Several variations.
with the usual rolled platform cover. ofthe basic structure are disclosed.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the shoe illustrated in Figures 1' to 3,. inclusive, which is perhaps the most practical form, from a commercial standpoint, will be descirbed first.
The basic shoe isthe well-known slip. lasted type. The upper 1, of any desired designand of either open orclosecl. heel or toe, or both, is stitched to the'insole' 2', where the upper is present, and to the platform cover strip 3 about the forward part of the shoe. The heel cover'rnaterial 4" is then stitched to the upper and insole. A last is inserted, and the usual cushioning material Sand filler or platform sections/6 are put in position. The platform] cover. strip 3 is. then pulled over the forward portion of.
the platform in the. customary manner. To this point in the construction; conventional inside. heel technique is. followed and the resulting structure is the same.
It might be pointed out that in outside heel construction, instead of the heel'cove'r material 4' being attached: to, the insole a continuation of the platform cover, strip is so. attached; and strip alsois pulled over theplatform. The heelcover material is attached to the heel the p-latformcoverseparately, and theiheel attached after strip is pulled over;
In the presentinvention, the, heel cover material is formed of two: sections seamed together- The upper section 7: is a band extending around the heel section, and
stitched along its upper: edge; as at 8-, to the insole, or
to the, upper and insole where the upper is present. The i bandis of-suflicient'widthso that after seaming to the lower heel cover section fiit be substantially the width oftherolled platform cover 10 and appear to bea continuation of it. The insole and upper'section 7 of the heel cover material are laid face to face and stitched to form the seam- 8, as are the sections 7 and 9 to form the seam 11 extending completely around the heel area. Thus, when the material is folded over the seam edges will project inwardly. The edges of the seam 8 will lie on opposite sides of the platform or filler, and the folded over material at the seam will appear as a top edge of a continuation of the platform cover 10.
A shaped wooden heel 12 is slipped into place within the cover material to fit snugly against the bottom of the platform or filler. The heel is substantially the same as that now used in slip lasted platform shoes, except that it is provided with a groove 13 extending completely around it spaced from the top surface. parallel to the top edge and follows the graceful archforming curvature of the heel. The groove is spaced from the top edge just the proper distance to permit the inwardly projecting edges of the cover material at the seam 11 to fit within it. This prevents bulging of the cover material at the seam and allows it to adhere closely to the sides of the heel. The folded over material at the seam gives the appearance of a continuation of the bottom edge of the platformcover so that the top section of the cover material carries out the platform cover motif through the arch and around the heel. The heel may be notched at its forward end, as at 14, to receive the rear end of the forward platform section.
When the heel is snugly in position and the seam edges of the cover material are pressed into the groove 13, the
"Patented July26, 1960;-
The groove is cover material is lasted over the heel, as at 15. The outer sole 16 is then put in place and secured.
It will be obvious that the two sections of the heel cover material may be thesame or different colors or n'iiaterials. In most instances the upper section will match the platform cover strip to carry out the-illusion .of a continuous rolled platform cover. By using different colors for the upper and lower sections of the heel cover material the effect is emphasized. a
- Some variation of this structure may be possible. For example, in Figures 4 and 5 the upper and lower sections of the heel cover material are overlapped and seamed, as at 17. 'The free edge 18 of the underlying material is turned and inserted in the groove in the heel. The lower edge 19 of the overlying section remains exposed. This will not have the finished look of the preferred structure but may be'usedfin some constructions.
In Figures 6 and 7, the upper and lower sections of the heel cover material are laid back to back and seamed, as at 20. This results in an outwardly extending rib 21 running completely around the heel. In this form the heel needs no groove.
In Figures 8 and 9, the two sections of cover material are laid in edge abutment and seamed at 22 by wellknown zig-zag stitching.
All of these various forms create the illusion of a shoe having the sought after full platform with outside heel merely by way of illustration and the invention may take other forms within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a slip lasted platform shoe of the inside heel type, an upper, a platform, an insole over the platform and attached to the upper, a platform cover strip secured to the insole about the forward part of the shoe and pulled over the platform to form a rolled platform cover, a heel, a strip of heel covering material substantially the width of the platform cover stitched to the insole about the heel area from the ends of the platform cover strip, a second section of heel covering material coextensive with the first and stitched to the lower edge of the first, said second section of heel covering material being pulled over the heel, and an outer sole secured to the platform and heel.
having their stitched adjacent edges overlapped.
4,.In a slip lasted platform shoe as claimed in claim 1, said ifirst and "second sections of heel covering material having their stitched edges in abutment and joined by zigzag stitching.
5. In af slip'lasted platform shoe as claimed in claim 1, said first and second sections having their stitched adjacent edges out-turned.
6. In a slip lasted platform shoe of the inside heel I type, an upper and a platform, a platform cover strip about the forward part of the shoe and pulled over the platform to form a rolled platform cover, a heel, heel covering material in two parts about the heel area of the shoe from the ends of the platform cover strip and extending downwardly from the upper, the cover material being in joined upper and lower sections with the upper section being substantially the width of the rolled platform cover to appear as a continuation thereof, the covering material being pulled over the heel, and an outer sole secured to the platform and heel, the upper and lower sections of the cover material being joined by having their adjacent edges turned inwardly and stitched together, and said heel having a groove extending about it spaced and parallel to the top edge to receive the joined inturned edges of the cover material sections.
