Be it known that I, Joi-IN I-I. PILLINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented ccrtainnew and useful Improvements in Selective )pcrating Mechanism, of which the followlng is aspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to selective operating mechanism, and it is designed more particularly for use in connection with typewriters, but is capable of application to devices of various kinds'having a plurality of parts to be selectively operated.
The present invention is a modification of, and constitutes in some respects an improvement on, devices for similar purposes shown patents, filed by me Sept. 29th, 1.913, Ser; No. 792,368, and October 10th, 1913, Ser. No. 794,775.

To this end it is a further object of the invention to provide pneumatically controlled selective mechanism for establishing a positive connection between av driven actuating member and a selected part to be operated.

.In. these drawings I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention and have shown the samc as mounted on a main frame l which is preferably in the: form of a cabi net. which incloscs the operative parts of the. mechanism. Mountcd upon this main frame is a typcv riter 2; of ordinary construction, or any other device which is to be operated. with the usual type ha rs 4 which constitute the parts to be operated, and these type bars are connecter. with the key bars 5 in the usual manner.
In carrying out my invention I provide an actuating member which is positively driven, preferably continuously, and is adapted to be connected with any one of the operable parts, or type bars. of the typewriter. In connection with this actuating member I provide a pneumatically controlled selective mechanism to operatively connect the actuating mcmber with a selected one of said operable parts. Prefe'ably the se lective mechanisn'i comprises a series of selecting devices adapted to be moved into operative relation with the actuating member to establish the desired connection. Secured to the rod 4.0 is an arm 41 to which is secured the upper end of a piston rod 42, the lower end of which is connected with a piston 43, mounted in a cylinder 44: and held normally in its elevated position by a spring 45. This cylinder connected by means of a tube 46 with the suction device 25 so that when the mechanism is in operation suction will be exerted on the piston 4l3 and the tension of the spring 45 is such that the spring will be compressed by the suction; and the locking plate 39 moved into and heldin its inoperative position. Preferably the spring 45 has a greater tension than the sp in-gs 20 of the flrmgers, and consequently, when the suction is decreased the spring 45 will actuate its piston, and, consequently, the springs 20 will actuate their plungers. Thus the lo .l;- ing device operates before the plungers are released and there is no possibility of these plungers being displaced by the expansion of their springs after the motor has stopped. Likewise, when the apparatus is started the suction, as it gradually increases. will first become sufficient to retain the plungers in their retracted positions, and subsequently, wilt-actuate the piston 43 to move the locking'device into its inoperative position.

The carriage return is accomplished in somewhat the same manner as it is in the applications above mentioned, but the driving. shaft is arranged lengthwise of the machine on the outside of the frame, and constitutes in the present arrangement, the same shaft, 33, that drives the roller secured thereto a clutch member 47. Mounted in bearings .48 is a short shaft 49 arranged in alinement with the shaft 33, and having rigidly secured to that cndthereof adjacent to the clutch member 47, 50 adapted to cooperate with the clutch member 47 to connect together the shafts 33 and 49. As the carriage approaches its initial position astop mounted thereon, as shown at 55, engages the rock arm 55 of the shaft 53, moves the shaft 49 in a direction to disconnect the clutch members and to again cause the latch member 57, which is spring-actruited, to en gage its keeper and lock the clutch members in their disconnected positions. Connected With the drum 61 is a weight 67 which tends to rotate the drum and to wind up the tape when the clutch members are disconnected, and thus to take up the slack in the tape.
In order to use the automatic operating mechanism in connection with a tabulator on a typewriting machine, it is necessary that a specieal device be provided to hold the tabulator' key down until the carriage. has moved the desired distance. lVhen operated by hand this key is naturally held down long enough to permit of the movement of the carriage, but the automatic operation is so rapid that it is necessary to provide this auxiliary-device. In Figs.- 6 and 7 the tabulator frame is shown at ()8 and the tripping stops at 69. These parts are of ordinary construction and operation and need not be described in detail. In conncction with these devices I have provided a bracket 70 on which is mounted an arm 71 extending through the tabnlator frame 68 and hav1 ng.mou nted' thereon a springactuated d 72 which normally bears against the side of a plate or bar 73 secured to the tabulator frame. When the tabulator frame is operated, this dog, engages back of the plate 73 and thus locks the plate and the frame in their retracted'positions until the carriage has completed its movement.
The operation of the mechanism will be readily understood from the description of the operation of the several parts thereof, and it will be apparent that when a record has been made on a web of paper in any suitablemanner and this web mounted in the machine, that the type bars will be caused to move in the roper sequence to typewrite the matter which has been placed upon the paper record, and that this matter canbe rewritten as often as is desired. It is possible :to quickly remove one record and substitute another by simply removing the roller 32, it being detachably connected with its trunnions The record which has been removed can be rolled into a small. compass and filed where it will be readily accessible when it is again desired to typewrite the same matter. .1 t will be noted that the mechanism is very simple in its construction and in its operation, that it comprises a "comparatively small number of parts and that the operation oi the type bars is accomplished by a positive connection with the actuating member, the pneumatic mecha-- nism serving only to establish a connection lJPI-WCClttllQ actuating n'iember and the type bars. This not only makes it possible to operate the machine witlra small suction apparatus, but it does away with the uncertainty of a sueiion-operated. actuating de vice.
\Vhile l have shown and described one enilmdinient of my inventiiini, it will be understood that this has been chosen for the purpose of illustration only, and that I do not desire to be limited to the details there of. as obvious modifications will occur to one skilled in the art.
Ilaving thus fully descr bed my inved tion, what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. In an operating mechanism of the character described. the cei'nbiinition, with an actuating ilrvist'-"-- and a plurality of parts to be actuated, said parts being normally disconnected from said actuating device, of-selooting devices movable into positions to connect said actuating device with selected parts to be operated, a series of pneumatic operating devices for said selecting devices comprising air -haml' ers, movable members operatively connected with the respective selecting iilevircs, an air pump connected with said chambers and acting on said movable members to move the same in one direction, and means to move said movable mem bore in the other c lirection, said chambers having individual controlling ports leading directly to the atmosphere and adapted to be opened and closed to control the operation of the selecting device.

An operating mechan1sm, of the character described, comprising an actuating device, selecting devices to operativelyfconnect said actuating device with a selected one of a plurality of parts to be operated, a series of pneumatic operating devices for said selecting devices 'comprising movable members operatively connected With the respective selecting devices, suction apparatus connected with said chambers and acting on said movable members to move the same in one direction, means to move said movable members in the other direction when the suction thereon is relieved, said air chamber having individual relief ports leading directly to the atmosphere and arranged to be normally closed by a perforated Web passing over the same, and to be opened by the perforations in said Web to relieve the suction in the respective chambers and permit said movable members to be moved in said other direction.
