Abstract

Inventor 'erbam/ Pdze b/ 8y Mum/$511M n- RECORDING ARRANGEMENT FOR TYPING AND PUNCHING THE SAME INFORMATION BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION It is known to automatically operate a punching device during typing on a typewriter, or to control a typewriter by a punched tape. It is also possible to operate a typewriter and a punching device under the control of a readout device reading out information from a record carrier.
It is a disadvantage of such an arrangement that due to faulty operation, different information may be typed by the typewriter than is punched by the punching device.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the invention to simultaneously produce a punched card and a typed copy sheet containing the same information.
Another object of the invention is to produce a printing form in the typewriter instead of a copy sheet.
Another object of the invention is to enter information into a punching device so that corresponding information is punched into a punched card, and to operate type actions by output elements of the punching device so that the typing and punching of identical information is assured by the series connection of the input means, punching device and typewriter.
Another object of the invention is to operate type actions by information received from an input device, such as the readout means of a record carrier, or manually operated key means, and to control output elements of a punching device by the actuated type actions so that the series connection between the input means, type actions, and punching elements assures identity of the typed and punched information.
With these objects in view, one embodiment of the invention comprises input means for introducing information, for example a readout device for a record carrier, or manually operated key means; a punching device for punching holes representing information; a printing device, such as a typewriter mechanism including a series of type actions for typing information; first control means connecting one of the devices with the input means; and second control means connecting the output means of the same device with the respective other device for actuating the latter. In this manner, the same information is reliably punched and typed, preferably on a copy sheet or printing form, and on a punch card.
The series connection input means, punching device, and printing device, or input means, printing device and punching device assures that exactly the same information is typed or printed, independently of the transfer of the information from the input means to the devices.
In the embodiment in which the information is supplied by a readout means to the punching device, a conventional coding device is provided between the same if a different code is used, and a decoding conventional device is provided between the punching device and the typewriter.
In the embodiment in which the readout means of the record carrier are connected with the typewriter, a decoding device is provided between the same, and the typewriter is connected by a coding device to the punching device. The punching device is of the type in which successively arriving pulses are stored, whereupon information concerning an entire line is simultaneously punched into the punch card.
Information is transferred from the punching device to the typewriter by switches operated by output elements of the punching device and energizing electromagnets by which the type actions are actuated. Every type action operates a switch which is connected with the transporting means of the record carrier containing the input information so that the same is shifted to the following position in which it is again read out.
In the embodiment in which the typewriter controls'the punching device, and is controlled by a readout means reading out a record carrier, the readout device produces impulses energizing magnets which operate the type actions, and the type actions operate switches by which selector magnets of the punching device are energized.
It is also possible to operate the type actions of the typewriter by keys, and to operate switches controlling the selector magnets of the punching device by the actuated type actions.
In a modified embodiment, the pulses produced by the input means operate relay contacts controlling the punching magnets which close switches controlling the actuating magnets of the type actions, and the type actions control auxiliary switches for operating another punching device punching holes into a punched tape so that an additional record of the information is made.
The electromagnets by which the type actions are actuated, may either directly operate a type bar, or act on a key lever connected with the respective type action.
In the arrangement of the invention, it is possible to write under control of a punched record carrier tape, a printing form or duplicating master sheet on a typewriter, while a punching device automatically punches into a card at least part of the information typed on the printing form. It is particularly advantageous that the operation of the typewriter is not directly controlled by the record carrier tape, but is indirectly controlled through the punching device, since in this manner it is assured that all values which are written or typed, and which in accordance with a program have to be punched into the card, are actually punched.
It may be necessary during the typing of the printing form under the control of a record carrier tape, or under manual control, in addition to the punching of a card, also to make a punched tape in an auxiliary punching device. In such an arrangement of the invention, it is particularly advantageous to have no direct connection from the key to the type actions and type bars, but to operate the type actions from elements of the punching device, using coding devices and decoding devices, since in this manner it is assured that all values typed by the typewriter are actually introduced into the punching device and punched into a card.
The novel features which are considered as characteristic for the invention are set forth in particular in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its construction and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of specific embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawings.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring first to FIG. 1, a readout device 13 reads out the information recorded on the punched record carrier 3 and transmits corresponding pulses through the cable 35 to a coding device 33 which codes the received information in a code having four code elements and transmits the information in coded form to the punching device 6. The coding device 33 is only required if the code used for the record carrier tape 3, is different from the code in which the information is punched by the punching device 6 on a card 5.
The information which is punched by punching device 6 is transmitted through a cable 37 to a decoding device 26 and from the same to output means of a typewriter 2 which are a series of type actions for printing or typing a copy sheet, printing form or duplicating master 1. When a type action is actuated, a switch is closed, as will be described hereinafter, and the corresponding pulse is transmitted through cable 39 to the transporting means of the readout device 13 whereby record carrier tape 3 is transported one step so that the next following position is read out and transmitted to the punching device 6 and the printing device of typewriter 2.
FIG. 3 illustrates the construction of the storing and punching device 6. Two rows of selector elements 101 are mounted on shafts 105 for angular movement, and each selector element has a segment-shaped portion provided with an abutment 1010, the abutments of successive selector elements being circumferentially staggered.
Each selector element 101 cooperates with the armature of a selector magnet 23 and is urged by a spring 104 secured to a fixed abutment 103 to turn to a position in which its abutment 101a abuts the armature of the correlated selector magnet 23.
Pairs of selector elements of the two rows cooperate, and each pair is correlated with a value of the record carrier tape 3.
If a pair of selector magnets 23 is energized, the respective armatures are withdrawn and release the projections 101a so that the respective two selector elements turn in opposite directions to a position in which the respective two coupling members 106 are displaced toward each other until located under the punch actuator member 107.
The displacement of the selector elements causes engagement of two control switches 24 and closing of the same.
When all required pairs of selector magnets 23 are actuated, the information is stored by the displaced selector elements 101, and a punching operation can be started. Shaft 110 is rotated by drive means through a one revolution clutch, not shown, and turns a partial gear 113 in the direction of the arrow E so that a connecting rod 111 pivotally connected at 112 with gear 113, is displaced and moves actuator member 107 downward while the same is guided by a guide shaft 114 in vertical slots 115.
All coupling members 106 are guided in a pair of slotted guide bars 116 and rest on punch plates 1 17. Each punch plate is located directly above the head of a punch 118 which is biased by a spring 119 resting on a guide plate 120 provided with bores into which the punches project. A punch card is placed between guide plate 120 and a lower guide plate 121.
When actuator member is moved downward during a revolution of shaft 1 10, every punch 118 is operated whose associated pair of selector elements was previously released and has assumed an operative position in which coupling members 106 couple the actuator member 107 with the respective punch plates 1 17.
In this manner, pulses successively transmitted to pair of selector magnets 23 are stored until the entire information to be punched is represented by displayed selector elements, whereupon all selected punches 118 are simultaneously operated to punch holes along a line of punch card 5, while the selector elements 101 whose associated selector magnets were not energized remain in the inoperative position in which the coupling members 106 thereof are not located under the actuator member 107.
When the punching operation has been carried out, a cam 122 on shaft 110 engages a pair of rollers 124 on angular clearing levers 108 so that the same are pivoted about pivots 123 in the direction of the arrows F against the action of springs 126 secured at until clearing rods 109, carried by the clearing levers 108, engage the ends of displaced previously selected selector elements 101 and return the same against the action of the springs 104 to a cleared position in which the ends of coupling members 106 are spaced from each other and from the actuator member 107, while the armatures of selector magnets 23 again engage the respective abutments 101a under the action of springs, not shown.
After the punching of the card 5 has been carried out, the partial gear 113 meshing with a gear 129 on shaft 127 turns a transporting roller 128 by which the card 5 is transported on line spacing step to a position in which the next following line of card 5 is located under the row of punches 1 18. In each line position, transporting roller 128 is arrested by an arresting wheel 130 secured thereto, which cooperates with a catch 13] urged by a spring into notches of the arresting member 130. Catch member 131 and spring 132 are mounted in the bore of a holding member 133.
Above the two rows of selector elements 101, a clearing device is located and includes a clearing member 135 biased by a spring 136 and guided in a guide plate 134.
The clearing device is movable parallel to shafts 105 along the two rows of clearing elements 101 to a position located directly above any selected pair of selector elements 101. If an error has occurred and a pair of selector elements is in a wrong position, the clearing device is placed above the same,
and the clearing member 135 is depressed, engages the respective two selector elements, and turns the same in opposite direction to the inoperative position shown in FIG. 3 in which the ends of the coupling members 106 are spaced from each other and from the actuating member 107.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 3 is operated as follows:
Information is read out by the readout device 13 from record carrier tape 3 which moves stepwise. Readout information is transmitted in the form of pulses through first control means including cables 35 and 36 and coding device 33 to the selector magnets 23 of punching device 6 as diagrammatically shown in FIG. 2. As explained with reference to FIG. 3, successive energization of pairs of selector magnets 23 causes setting of the selector elements 101 to operative positions for punching holes into the punch card 5, and when all selector elements 101 are set, a line of punched holes is made in "card 5 by punches 1 18.
The selected and displaced selector elements 101 close switches 24, see FIGS. 2 and 3, which transmit impulses to the decoding device 26 from which the information is transmitted in the form of electric pulses through cable 38 to printing electromagnets 28 whose armatures 29 are respectively connected with type levers 31 mounted for pivotal movement about pivots 30 and actuated when the respective printing electromagnet 28 is energized by a pulse originated by a switch 24 closed by the selector means of the punching device 6. The selected type levers 31 produce imprints on a copy sheet 1 in the typewriter so that the same information which was punched is also typed on the copy sheet, which may be a printing form or duplicating master.
Each type action or type lever 31 actuates, when operated to print on the copy sheet 1, a transporting switch 34, see FIG. 2, all transporting switches being connected to the transporting means of the readout device 13 so that the record carrier tape 3 is moved one step to place the next following recording under the sensing means of the readout device 13. The recordings on record carrier tape 3 are preferably punched holes, which are sensed by contact brushes, but optical sensing means may be used if the record carrier has recordings in the form of light or dark areas.
It will be seen that a value can only be printed on the copy sheet 1, if the same value was set by the selector elements 101 in the punching device 6 and punched into card 5.
The embodiment of FIG. 4 and FIG. 5 has auxiliary record ing means 4 so that the information can also be recorded, for example punched, into an auxiliary record carrier tape 3.
A readout device 13 reads out information from the record carrier tape 3 and transmits pulses representing information through cable 41 to the decoding device 40 from where pulses are transmitted through cable 43 to a series of electromagnets 44. Every time a value is read out there the record carrier tape 3, an electromagnet 44 associated with the respective value in the decimal system is energized and operates its armature 22 by which a switch 22 is actuated. The impulse produced by the respective switch 22 is not used for operating the type actions of typewriter 2, but is transmitted through control means including cable 8, coding device 10, and cable 12 to the selector magnets 23 of punching device 6, as schematically shown in FIG. 5 so that the respective selector elements 101, see FIG. 3, of the punching device 6 are operated and actuate the associated switches 24. The pulses produced by closed switches 24 are transmitted through cable 25 to the decoding device 26 and from there in decoded form through cable 27 to the printing electromagnets 28 whose armatures 29 operate type lever actions 31 turnable about pivots 30 so that the same are moved to the displaced typing position shown in broken lines in FIG. 5 and produce an imprint on printing form 1.
The value printed on the printing form 1 must be the same as the value punched into punch card 5 by punching device 6, since the value actually set in the punching device 6 by the selector elements 101 is directly transmitted to the printing magnets 28 by pulses produced by switches 24. The operative type actions 31 actuate associated auxiliary switches 32 in the printing position shown in broken lines, as shown in FIG. 5. Each closed auxiliary switch 32 produces a pulse which is transmitted through cable 7, coding device 9, and cable 11 to the recording device 4 in which the previously punched and printed information is now punched into a punched tape.
In a modification, the decoding device 26 is omitted, and the pulses produced by switches 22 are transmitted through coding devices and 9 to the selector magnets 23 of the punching device 6, and the selector magnets, not shown, of the punching device 4.
In the embodiment of FIGS. 6 and 7, the stepwise moving perforated record carrier tape 3 is read out by a readout device 13 which in each position of record carrier tape 3, produces a pulse representing the read out information. The pulses pass through cable 14 and decoding device 16 and are transmitted in decoded form through cable to the respective printing electromagnets 28 in the typewriter 17. The armatures 29 of the printing electromagnets 28 are connected with type actions or type levers 31 pivotally mounted on pivot means 30, and assuming, when operated by a printing electromagnet 28, the printing position shown in broken lines in FIG. 7 for making an imprint on the printing form or other copy sheet 1 representing the information read out by readout device 13.
Each actuating type action 31 actuates and closes a switch 45 connected by a cable 10 to a coding device from which coded pulses pass through a cable 19 to the selector magnets 23 of the punching device 6, see FIG. 3. In accordance with the value and information introduced by the readout device 13 and printed by the typewriter 17, one or several selector magnets 23 are energized to cause the punching of the same information by the punching device 6.
In a modified construction, the coding device 20 may be omitted, and the readout device 13 directly connected to the selector magnets 23 of the punching device 6, assuming that the same code is used for the record carrier tape 3 and the punch card 5.
It will be understood that in the embodiments of FIGS. 1 to 5, the information supplied by the input means 13 is used for actuating the selector magnets 23 of the punching device 6, and that the actuated selector elements 101 control switches 24 by which the printing magnets 28 of the type actions 31 are energized, whereas in the embodiment of FIG. 6, the information obtained from the input means 13 is supplied to the printing magnet of the type actions, which operate switches 45 to control the selector magnets 23 of the punching device 6.
means 13 are connected by first control means eitherto the punching device 6 which is connected with the printing device 17, or to the printing device 17 which is connected to the punching device 6. Due to the direct connection between the output means of the printing device 17 and of the punching device 6, which cause the typing and punching of the card respectively, it is assured that identical information is printed on a printing form or duplicating master, and punched in the punch card 5.
It will be understood that each of the elements described above, or two or more together, may also find a useful application in other types of recording arrangements for typing and punching the same information differing from the types described above.
The coding device shown in FIG. 1 is described more fully in my US. Pat. No. 3,283,70l, the decoding device shown also in FIG. 1 is described more fully in my copending patent application Ser. No. 690,151 Group No. 337 filed Dec. 13, 1967.
While the invention has been illustrated and described as embodied in a recording arrangement in which a punching device and a printing device are directly connected for producing the same information in the form of punched holes and printed characters irrespective to which of the devices the information is supplied, it is not intended to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may be made without departing in any way from the spirit of the present invention.
Without further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others can be applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various applications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention and, therefore, such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalence of the following claims.
What is claimed as new and desired to be protected by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.
1. Recording arrangement for typing and punching the same information, comprising, in combination, input means including a readout device for reading out information recorded on a record carrier, and transporting means for stepwise transporting the record carrier; a punching device having a set of output means including a set of punches for punching into a card holes representing information received from said record carrier, a set of selector means for selecting said punches, and a set of selector electromagnets for selecting said selector means, respectively; a printing device including a set of output means including a set of type levers for typing information on a copy sheet, and a set of printing electromagnets for operating said type levers, respectively; first control circuit means for electrically connecting said readout means with said selector electromagnets; second control circuit means including a set of switches actuated by the set of output means of said punching device, respectively, and electrically connected with said set of printing electromagnets to cause actuation of said type levers whereby identical information is and then typed punched irrespective of errors introduced by said input means; and a set of transporting switches operated by said type levers, respectively, and electrically connected with said transporting means for causing a step of said record carrier upon each actuation of any type lever.
2. Recording arrangement as claimed in claim 1 comprising auxiliary switches operated by said type levers, respectively; and recording means for recording on a tape and being controlled by said auxiliary switches to record on said tape the same information which is typed on said copy sheet and also punched in said card.
3. Recording arrangement as claimed in claim 1 wherein said punches are arranged in a straight row, and wherein said punching device includes a common actuator for said row of punches so that a line of holes is simultaneously punched corresponding to a line typed by said type actions.

Claims (3)

1. Recording arrangement for typing and punching the same information, comprising, in combination, input means including a readout device for reading out information recorded on a record carrier, and transporting means for stepwise transporting the record carrier; a punching device having a set of output means including a set of punches for punching into a card holes representing information received from said record carrier, a set of selector means for selecting said punches, and a set of selector electromagnets for selecting said selector means, respectively; a printing device including a set of output means including a set of type levers for typing information on a copy sheet, and a set of printing electromagnets for operating said type levers, respectively; first control circuit means for electrically connecting said readout means with said selector electromagnets; second control circuit means including a set of switches actuated by the set of output means of said punching device, respectively, and electrically connected with said set of printing electromagnets to cause actuation of said type levers whereby identical information is and then typed punched irrespective of errors introduced by said input means; and a set of transporting switches operated by said type levers, respectively, and electrically connected with said transporting means for causing a step of said record carrier upon each actuation of any type lever.
2. Recording arrangement as claimed in claim 1 comprising auxiliary switches operated by said type levers, respectively; and recording means for recording on a tape and being controlled by said auxiliary switches to record on said tape the same information which is typed on said copy sheet and also punched in said card.
3. Recording arrangement as claimed in claim 1 wherein said punches are arranged in a straight row, and wherein said punching device includes a common actuator for said row of punches so that a line of holes is simultaneously punched corresponding to a line typed by said type actions.
