Description

A. W. DEANE.
STOVE LID LIFTER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY I6. 1914.
R-W. Deane.
Patented Dec. 12, 1916.
ALBERT WALLACE DEANE, 0F JULIET, ILLINOIS.
STOVE-LID LIFTER.
Application filed May 16, 1914;.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT N. DEANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Joliet, in the county of I ill and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Lid Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in stove lid lifters and has for its primary object to provide a lifter by means of which a lid may be lifted with ease and rapidity and prevented slipping relative to the lifter.
Another and more specific object is to provide novel means to grip the top of the stove lid in such manner that the falling thereof relative to the lifter is prevented and a person permitted to remove the stove lid with much more case and rapidity than is the case with the ordinary stove lifter.
Another object of importance is to provide a lifter of the characterrdescribed that is simple as to construction, reliable and eiiicient in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out as claimed.
With reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved lid lifter showing the same operatively connected with the lid and the lid in section, Fig. 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken through the handles of my lid lifter showing the means for normally holding the handles in spaced relation to each other, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the clamping bar.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference the numerals 1 and 2 designate handles formed of some suitable metal and being offset adjacent certain ends so as to be spaced from each other for a purpose to be later more fully described.
A pivot pin 3 is inserted through ears 4 on the handle 1 and ears 5 on the handle 2. These ears are arranged intermediate the ends of the handles and engage one another, the ears 5 engaging the inner faces of the ears 3. Formed on the end of the handle 1 farthest removed from the ofiset portion there- Specification of Letters Patent.

of is an angularly disposed lifting lug 6 that is arranged to extend within't-he ordinary type of recess 7 formed in the upper face of the stove lid 8.
Pivoted intermediate its ends as at 9 to cars 10 formed on the opposite sides of the handle 1 adjacent to the lug 6 is a clamping bar 11 arranged with its forward end 12 eX- tended beyond the ing 6 so as to be moved lIltO clamping engagement with the upper face of the stove lid 8. The inner end 13 of the bar 11 is loosely mounted within a slot 1 1 formed in an enlarged head 15 that is disposed at the inner end of the handle 2. It will be readily seen that when the handle 2 is moved toward the handle 1 and the slotted head 15 moved upwardly, the end portion 12 of the bar 11 will be brought into clamping or bearing engagement withthe upper face of the'lid and the lid-held against slipping or derangement relative to the lug 6.
A recess 16 is formed in the under face of the handle 2 adjacent to the pivot point thereof to permit the mounting of a leaf spring 17 between the handles 1 and 2. The leaf spring 17 is operatively connected with the pivot pin 3 and bent into an approximate U-shape so that its arm portions engage the handles 1 and 2 and serve to hold them normally in spaced relation to each other at their offset ends as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in the drawings. When the handles are held in spaced relation to each other at their outer ends, the end portion 12 of the clamping bar 11 is so positioned that the lug 6 may be readily inserted within the recess 7 in the stove lid 8. The handles 1 and 2 at their offset portions are preferably formed with a number of openings so as to eliminate the retention of heat within the lifter, and provide a light device. To lift a lid it is only necessary to force the lug 6 into the recess 7 in the lid and by then grasping and forcing the handle portion 2 toward the one 1 at its offset end the clamping bar 11 is brought into hearing or clamping engagement with the lid and the lid is securely held in position so that it may be lifted in a reliable and expeditious manner and as easily positioned uponrthe stove.
The bar 11 is curved slightly and provided with an offset ear intermediate its ends which is pivoted between the ears 10. The bar 11 extends for a distance equivalent to approximately half its length beyond and above the lug 6 and has its convex my .invention, illustrated in the drawings andreferred to in the-above description, as thG'PTGfQIlGdi6111b0Cl1Il18Il 0, IS the most eflicient and practical; yetrealizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device willnecessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction proporf tion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of .theadvantages of my invention, as set forth. V
What is claimed is: A. stove lid liftercomprising, a stationaryhandle member having one end provided with a lifting lug, a second-handle disposed above the first-mentioned handle andpivoted thereto intermediate its'endsqand at a point'beyond the lifting lug. and having one end bifurcated, the fingers of the bifurcation extending in parallelism and coextensive with each other, cars formed on the stationary handle and located at the point of juncture between the handle and the lifting lug; an arcuate shaped clamping memberoverlying the lifting lug on the stationary handle and having one end projecting beyond the free end of the lifting lug and its opposite end overlying the stationary handle and reduced and located between the fingers oi the bifurcated endof the pivoted handle, ears depending from the arcuate shaped clamping member and located adjacent thereduced end and positioned between and pivoted to the ears on the stationary handle, and a spring interposed between the pivoted and stationary handles and located to one side or" the pivotal connection be tween the handles toeflect normal depression of the bifurcated end of the pivoted handle so as to normally hold the clamping member in unclamping position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
