Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. V12, 1913.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT E. CONRAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vaniport, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tiltable Sashes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sash fasteners and it is especially adaptable for use on tiltable sashes, having primarily for an oloject to provide means for holding the sash in a predetermined tilted position to facilitate cleaning, etc., `of the latter.
Another object 'of `the invention is to provide mechanism for normally holding the sash in locked position in its casing, suitable manually operated means being provided to release the mechanism so that the sashmay be swung to open position.
@ther objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood fromthe following description taken l in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification.

In the drawin s wherein is illustrated the preferred embo iment of this invention, a portion 0f a window sash 5 is provided which is mounted in a casing '6, the sash having a window pane 7 mounted therein in the usual manner.
The window sash 5 is provided with an enlarged circular opening 8 therein, which opens through one of the faces of the 'sash and communicates at its inner end with an elongated recess '9, the latter extending laterally in the sash from lone of the lateral margins thereof, the exterior lateral margin of the sash being provided with a recess 10 therein, in which is mounted a cap 11, which has a bore 12 extending centrally therethrough and registering with the recess 9 in the sash, theI outer end 'of said bore 12 being 'enlarged as indicated at 13, and shown to 'advantage in Fig. 11. Radi-ating from the enlarged portion 13 are a plurality of grooves 14, which are adapted for coperation with lugs 15 on the reinforcing block 16, in order to retain the sash in a predetermined tilted position, as hereinafter more fully described.
Mounted in the recess 9 of the sash I5, is a metallic sleeve 17, in which is arranged a coil spring 18, the inner convolution of the latter bearing against the sash at the inner end 'of the recess 9, and the outer convolution engaging the inner terminal of a pivotbolt 19.
The bolt 19 in the present instance is of a cylindrical` configuration and is provided adjacent vone of its terminals with an opening 20, whiler the opposite end thereof has a portion of the periphery out away, so as to, provide a reduced shank 21, the free end 22 'of the shank being of a diameter coincident with the diameter of the body of the bolt 19 and adapted for engagement through an opening 23 in the window casing 6. The reduced shank 21 is extended through complemental openings in a floating strip 24 and the reinforcing block 16, so as to operatethe floating strip upon the actuation of the bolt l19. The floating strip 24 in the present instance comp-rises a sheet of resilient metal, the lateral margins of which are folded so as to provide a U-sliaped structure in cross section. The floating strip 24 is mounted for movement in an elongated longitudinally extending recess 25 in the casing 6, said recess 25 being of a depth slightly greater than the depth `of the floating strip from the free margins of the latter to its vertex, whereby the outer faces of the lugs will lie in a plane substantially flush with the inner lateral margin of the window casing, or slightly beyond the latter, so as to insure a more positive securing action when the lugs are engaged in the grooves 14- of the cap 11, and when so formed, the sash is adapted to be made slightly smaller than the opening in the window casing, so as to permit of a slight lateral bodily movement of the sash in its casing, to permit engagement of the lugs in the grooves 14'and disengagement of the same therefrom, when desired, it being, of
- course, obvious that accidental displacement of the lugs from. the recesses will be prevented, in view of a spring 26 which is earlried by the floating strip 24 and is interposed between said strip and the bottom of the recess 25 in the window casing, so as to normally hold said strip outwardly from engagement with the window casing at said bottom of the recess 25.
The window sash 5 is provided in its outer Y lateral margin with a longitudinally extending semicylindrical recess 26, which receives the vertex of the floating strip 24, when the latter is in a locked position, so as to hold the sash from movement, as shown to advantage in Fig. 2. 1n this position, it is seen that the free terminal kof the bolt 22 is disengaged from the opening 23, thereby permitting sliding movement of the sash in the easing, but just as soon as pressure is released from the bolt 19, the end 22 is automatically rengaged in the opening 23, by distention of the spring 18, to permit pivotal movement of the sash in the casing, although the floating strip is normally forced into snug engagement with the recess 26 of the sash 5, as shown to advantage in Fig. 2, in view of the spring 26.
1n order to operate the bolt 19 in the sleeve 17, a turning-key comprising a base plate 27, which is detachably mounted on the sash 5 over the opening 8 and is provided with an elongated slot 28, through which is slidably mounted a pin 29, the latter extending through the opening 8 of the sash 5 and the opening 20 of the bolt 19, whereby the latter is operated lby the movement of the pin 29. |The outer end of the pin 29 is fixedly engaged with a disk 30, said disk comprising a part of the turning-key structure, and'having a portion of its periphery extended to provide a finger-engage-able portion 31, in order to facilitate actuation. A stud 32 extends from the inner face of the disk 30 and is fixedly carried by the latter, said stud being mounted for movement in a T-shaped slot 33, as shown to advantage in Fig. 5, whereby rotation of the disk 30 causes the pin 29 to be moved in the slot 28, for operating the bolt 19.
1n, operation, we will assume that the floating strip 24 is seated in the opening 25,
as shown to advantage in Fig. 7, in which instance, the sash may be rotated, in view of the fact that the end 22 of the bolt 19 is mounted in the opening 23, so as to provide an axis upon which the sash is rotatable. When in this position, the spring 2G is, of course, flexed, while the spring 18 is distended, it being necessary to exert pressure on the operating portion 31 of the disk 30, in order to hold the floating strip 24 in this position. As soon as the sash has been tilted to a predetermined angle, at which the sash is desired to be held, has been been reached, pressure is released from the portion 31, so as to permit the floating strip 24 to be forced outwardly in view of the spring 26, thereby engaging the lugs 15, inthe grooves 14 of the cap 11. It is therefore seen that the sash may be held in a substantially rigid position in view of this locking means, and when it is desired to right the sash to its normal position, pressure is again exerted on the operating portion 31 of the disk 30, thereby causing the floating strip 24 to be moved rearwardly into the opening 25, so as to disengage the lugs 15 from the grooves 14 and permitting the window sash to be swung on its axis into its normal position, and just as soon as pressure is released from the operating portion 31, the floating strip 9 24 will be immediately actuated, so that the vertex thereof will engage in the semieylindrical recess 26 of the sash 5, at the same time, causing the bolt 19 to be retracted in the recess 9, so as to positively prevent movement of the window sash.
1t will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination, a sash and casing, the said casing being provided with a longitudinal groove, a floating strip arranged in said groove, a spring for forcing said strip into engagement with said sash, a reinforcing member in said strip, lugs on said member extending beyond said strip, a cap on said sash having radial grooves adapted to receive said lugs, a pin on said sash extending through said floating strip, the said pin being adapted when moved a given distance in one direction to force said strip out of engagement with said sash, and means for moving said pin.
2. 1n combination, a sash and casing, the said c-asing being provided with a longitudinal groove, a floating strip arranged in said groove, a spring for forcing said strip into engagement With said sash a reinforcing member 1n said strip, lugs on said member extending beyond said strip, a Cap on saidv l0 latter into said groove when the said pin is moved in one direction, a spring for normally holding said pin extended, and means for retracting said pin.
