To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, DAVID It. CALER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beaver, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention refers to the class of window I sashes, of'the type in which the sash is mounted for sliding engagement in the frame with accompanying followers, one on each side of the sash and laterally adjustable thereto, together with pivotal connections between the sash, followers, and frame for adjustment of the sash, locking of the sash, and to enable it to be turned on said pivots.
The invention refers particularly to the construction of the pivotal bolts. In the drawings the illustration is confined to this portion, it being understood that the sash is otherwise of the usual construction, mounted with its followers within the run ways of the frame, and that the pivotal bolt devices are mounted at each side of the sash.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view showing the operable exposed portions of the device in normal position, with the end of the bolt engaging a socket in the runway. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the bolt withdrawn. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the bolt and the follower projecting inwardly into their receiving recesses in the runway. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on the line IV. IV. of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a cross section on the line V. V. of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a cross section on the line VI. VI, of Fig. 3 showing the follower thrust inwardly to clear the edges of the sash for pivotal turning. Figs. 7 and 8 are detail views of the operating parts.
In the drawings, 2 represents the frame forming the runway for the sash, in each opposite inner face of which is formed a groove 3 for reception of the metallic follower 4. Said follower, which may be made of any suitable sheet metal, preferably noncorrosive, is composed of a longitudinal U shaped strip, the inner edges of which interit between the side walls of the groove 3, the rounded outer portion engaging a rounded receiving groove formed longitudinally in each edge of the sash, as indicated at 5. At one or more locations longitudinally of the runway, sockets G are provided extending laterally backwardl into the frame from the inner face of recess?) adapted to receive the inner terminals of the locking and pivot-ing bolts 7. It will be understood that the sockets 6 are in pairs, one at each side of the frame in opposite relationship, and that the bolts 7 are similarly arranged in the sash, as stated. The bolts 7 are designed to be inserted into the sockets, as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 5, for making locking engagement therewith, and to be withdrawn therefrom permitting the raising or lowering of the sash, as in Fig. 4. TheJ sockets are suficiently deep, as shown, to receive the inner ends of the bolts when projected abnormally, to enable the turning of t-he sash, when both bolts and the follower strip 4 are extended laterally at each side of the sash, as in Fig. 7.
Each bolt 7 is mounted within a receiving housing or tube 8 having a fixed engagement with the follower strip 4.` This may be done in the manner indicated in the drawings by Hanging the terminal of the tube 8 within the strip and inclosing it by a cross plate 9 within the follower. By this, or other equivalent connecting construction, the tube 8 and the follower4 are adapted to be moved together and to permit of the independent operation of the bolt 7. Tube 8 is itself mounted within the body portion of the sash frame 10, preferably by a receiving housing or outer tube 11, which tube may provide a pivotal or sliding mounting for tube 8. The inner end of the inner tube 8 is closed, as shown, and between such inner end and the inner end of bolt 7 is interposed a spring 12, adapted to normally press the bolt outwardly from the sash.
For the purpose of actuating the bolt 7, and also the inner tube 8 and its connected follower 4, in carrying out the differentfunctions of the device, the sash frame 10 is provided with a plate 13 having a longitudinal horizontal slot 14, said plate being secured preferably flush with the' faceof the sash by screws 15, 16. An operating bolt 17 extends by its shank 17 through the slot 14 and has an inner terminal 17 which fits into a receiving socket or hole in the rear end of boltr7. The bolt 17 is provided at its outer portion with a lever plate 18 and an inner retaining flange 19. Between said plate 18 and flange 19 the shank portion 17 plays longitudinally along through 4the horizontal slot 14, as controlled by the lever plate 18. 'Bolt 17 is provided with a turning ring 20 or other equivalent element and the lever plate 18 is recessed at one side providing shoulders 21 and 22 respectively. The head of screw 16 extends outwardly beyond the face of plate 13 and forms an abutment fixedly connected with the plate 13 and the sash frame-10, against which the bearing portions or shoulders 21, 22, of plate 18 may act, when the plate is turned by its ring 2O in one direction or the other.
In its normal position, as shown in Fig. 1, the tension of spring 12 maintains the bolt in its inward position, entering socket 6 and thrusting tube 8 inwardly within outer tube 11, correspondingly .drawing the follower 4, at each side of the sash, into the receiving groove 5; Upon turning plate 18 in the direction of the arrow a, Fig. 2, (and simultaneously in the opposite direction at the other side of the sash) the shoulder 2l of lever plate 18 engages screw head abutment 16 as a fulcrum, whereupon the shank 17 travels along through slot 14, withdrawing bolt 7 from socket 6 and compressing spring 12, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 4. In this position, the bolt having thus been withdrawn at each side of the sash, it may be freely raised and lowered. Upon turning lever plate 18 in the opposite direction, as indicated in Fig. 3, the bearing edge 22 operates against the screw head abutment 16 and acts to thrust the bolt 7, tube 8, and follower 4 inwardly into socket 6 and groove 3 respectively, as indicated in Fig. 6. The operation of thrusting the tube 8 inwardly is by engagement of stem 17 against the end 23 of a clearance slot 24 in tube 8. In such position, with the bolt and follower thrust in, the sash may be turned upon the bolts at each side as pivots, the grooves 5 of the sash .being thus enabled to clear the rounded edges of the followers 4.
It will be understood that the bolt socket 6 may be arranged at any desired position and of any number longitudinally of the frames beyond the follower grooves 3, whereby the sash may be located at any desired height and locked.
The engagement between the follower and sash will absolutely prevent turning of the sash upon the bolt as a pivot, until the followers have been thrust inwardly. As such operation can only be accomplished by manipulation of the bolts 17 fro-m the inside, the device is incapable of operation until the bolts have either been withdrawn or the followers thrust inwardly.
The entire apparatus is very compact, simple and durable. It embodies a capacity for operation in both directions and for automaticY return Yfor normal position, due to the expansive action of the contained spring 12, and is capable of continuous and satisfactory use in the manner intended.
Having described the invent-ion, what I claim is:
1. A pivotal sash lock consisting of a follower strip, a slotted bolt housing attached thereto, a bolt in said housing, a slotted tube for the bolt housing adapted to be mounted in the sash, a spring inserted between the ends of the bolt and its housing, andan operating pin extending through the slotted housing and tube and engaging the bolt, substantially as set forth.
2. A pivotal sash lock consisting of a follower strip, a slotted bolt housing attached thereto, a bolt in said housing, a slotted tube for the bolt housing adapted to be mounted in the sash, a spring inserted between the ends of the bolt and its housing, and an operating pin extending through the slotted housing and tube and engaging the bolt and provided with a bearing portion whereby upon rotation Vof the bolt said portion will bear against a resisting abutment and will impart movement to the operating pin and bolt, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a sash, of a slotted housing, a slotted tube within said housing, a follower strip connected with said tube, a pivotal locking bolt and a spring therefor in said tube, a slotted plate, and a pin extending therethrough engaging the bolt, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with a sash, of a slotted housing, a slotted tube within said housing, a follower strip connected with said tube, a pivotal locking bolt and a spring therefor in said tube, a slotted plate provided with la fulcrum device, a pin extending through said slotted plate and engaging the bolt and provided Vwith a lever attachment for co-peration with said Afulcrum device, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of a window frame provided with vertical recesses and bolt holes, a sash provided with laterally adjustable followers adapted for operation in said recesses, pivotal locking bolt devices at each side of the sash connected with said followers and having actuating pins provided with recessed lever plates and terminals, and fixed abut-ments extending outwardly from the face of the sash providing fulcrum bearings for said plates, substantially ais set forth.
