BENJAMIN ZIMMER, 0F MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1916.
Application filed November 11, 1914. Serial No. 871,49d.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN ZIMMER, citizen of the United States, resident of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a table adapted for use in a library or sitting room, and readily convertible into a table suitable for dining purposes.
A further object is to provide a table that will be neat and ornamental in appearance and of comparatively inexpensive construction.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view, partially in section, with the table top removed, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through a table embodying my invention, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line zvm of Fig. 1, showing the table top in its lowered position, Fig. d is a similar view, showing the top in its raised position, Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line yy of Fig. 1, showing the table top-raised and the extended position of the leaves, indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 6 is a similar view, show ing the leaves extended and the table top lowered into the plane of the leaves to adapt the table for dining purposes.
, In the drawing, 2 represents the side rails of the table, having end rails 3 and supporting legs l, the table being of the mission type, though the invention can be applied to any style or design of table.
5 and 6 represent cross bars between the rails 2, arranged in pairs in parallel relation, the bars of each pair being spaced apart and the bars 5 having guides 7 thereon for vertically slidable plates 8 upon which the table top 9 is supported and held in position thereon by suitable means, such as dowel pins 10. The plates 8 are preferably arranged at each end of the table near the middle line thereof and have a limited vertical movement through slots 11 provided in the end portions of a plate 12 that extends from end to end of the table along the middle thereof and is secured to the end rails 3 and the cross bars 6 by screws 13 or other suitable means. The end portions of the plate 12 are connected along the middle of the table by acomparatively narrow strip id and leaves 15 have their inner edges seated against the longitudinal edges of the plate 12 and are pivotally connected at 16 to one end of the links 17 whose opposite ends are pivotally connected to bars 18 which cross one another and are pivoted at 19 to the strip 14, the links and bars forming a lazy tong construction, for operating the leaves simultaneously, the movement of one leaf in or out causing a similar movement of the opposite leaf.
Each leaf is provided with bars 20 mounted transversely thereof and slidable in slots 21 in the side rails 2 and in the space be tween the cross bars 5 and 6, the lower edges of these bars having a sliding bearing on the side rails 2 and their upper edges bearing on the under surface of the plate 12 and being guided by these surfaces in the outward and inward movement of the leaves. The inner ends of the bars 20 are provided with depending pins 22 which, when the leaves are drawn out, engage the side rails 2 of the table and limit the outward movement of the leaves. When the leaves are pushed in to contact with the longitudinal edges of the plate 12, the outer edges of the leaves will register with the corresponding edges of the table top as indicated in Fig. 3, the table then presenting the appearance of an 0rdinary library or sitting room table. When, however, the table top is raised and the leaves are drawn out, the top may be lowered between the leaves, assuming the position indicated in Fig. 6, where the top and the leaves are shown in the same plane, the table being thereby considerably enlarged and made suitable for use as a dining room table. This idea, first raising the table top and then drawing out the leaves until the top can be lowered between them,1 regard as an important feature of my invention.
For the purpose of raising the table top quickly and conveniently, I provide levers 23, pivoted at a point intermediate to their ends on the cross bars 5, as at 24c, and hav ing lugs 2-5 at their inner ends which fit into sockets 26 in the plates 8. The outer ends of the levers are provided with lugs 27. Arms 28 are pivoted at one end in the cross bars 5 and are connected to one another by suitable means, such as a bail 29, and these arms are provided with lugs 30 which bear on the outer ends of the leaves 23 and contact with the lugs 27, so that when the arms are rocked by the outward movement of the bail 29, the levers 23 will be tilted to lift the plates 8 and raise the table top. During this outward movement of the bail, the lugs 30 will swing past the pivotal centers of the arms 28 and thereby the bail and levers will be locked and prevented from returning. prematurely to their normal position by the weight of the table top or articles which may be placed thereon. When the table top has been lifted, the operator, grasping one of the leaves can, through the connection with the opposite leaf, pull both of the levers outwardly to the position indicated by full lines in Fig. 6. When this has been done, the table top can be lowered between the leaves by swinging the bail inwardly, thereby allowing the top to drop down between the leaves in the same plane thereof, where its upper surface will form a continuation of the leaves and provide a table suitable for dining purposes.
This invention may also be applied to a teawagon orlike device, mounted on wheels and capable of movement from place to place. The application of the invention to such a construction would be substantially as shown herein, and I have thought that no further illustration of the specific application would be necessary.
To assist in raising the table top I prefer to provide springs 31 connecting the arms 28 with the side rail 2 and normally under tension when the table top is in its lowered position. These springs can be made of suitable tension to aid the operator materially in swinging the bail from the position shown in Fig. 3 to thatillustrated in Fig. 4c.
The table can be made in various sizes and designs, and in various ways the details of construction may be modified without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
