IROORE I,
Specification oi Letters Patent.
Patented llllec. 12, IOIO.
Applicationfiled August 21, 1914. Serial No. 857,917.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l[, WVILLIAM A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residin at Denver, in the county of Denver and tate of Colorado, have invented new and useful chinein the chuck of such machine.
The primary object. is to provide a simple and practicable device of a novel charac-' tor for the above purposes.
The preferred embodiment of the invention, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the coupling. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional View on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig.
3 1s a cross sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the members in coupled relation, with portions thereof broken away. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow and with the detachable member partially withsocket is formed with a bore 15, through drawn.
Similar reference numerals designate cor responding parts in all the figures of the drawings. j I
In the embodiment illustrated, a tubular support 6 is disclosed, having a tubular plug 7 in one end and containing a rotatable member 8, this member being provided with gear teeth 9 at one end, by which it can be suitably rotated.
The member 8 projects beyond the Support '6, and is provided with a'longitudinal socket 110 that is angular in cross section preferably square; This angular socket opens through the frontor projecting end of the member 8. Said member 8 is also provided with longitudinally elongated slots 11 out entirely through the same, and communicating with the socket in rear of the open mouth thereof. l-These slots are faces 12 constitute stop shoulders, as hereinafter pointed out.
The other member to be coupled is desig nated 13, and while it may be of any desired cross sectional shape, in the embodiment off shown, it is cylindrical and has an angular enlargement 1d, the cross sectional area of which corresponds substantially to that of the socket! 10. This angular enlargement 14: will thus pass through the open mouth of the socket 10, and when in line with the slots 11, it can be partially rotated in said socket, because the inner ends of the slots constitute 'fclearance spaces, as above described. The amount of rotation is, however, limited by the Walls 12 of the slots which constitute stop shoulders in the path of the; faces of said angular enlargement. It will furthermore be noted that when the angular enlargement thus bears-against said stop shoulders 12, the corners will be out of line with the socket and the two members 8 and 13 are interlocked against withdrawal from each other. I It will alsobe seen by reference to Fig. 1 that the slots 11 are considerably longer'than the enlargement 14, so that the two members 8 and 13' are capable of a limited relative movement. The portion of. the. member 8 in rear of the All which the rear end of the member 13 probe apparent to those skilled in the art, with V out further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted. to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. In a structure of the character set forth, two members to be coupled, one of said members having an open-ended socket that is angular in cross section, and internal recesses in the walls of said socket, form mg stop shoulders, the other member havmg an angular portion that enters the open end of ice llil
the socket and is partially rotatable therein,
the stop shoulders engaging said angular portion and limiting the rotation of the same in the socket.
2. In a structure of the character set forth, two members to be coupled, one of said members having a socket provided with an angular mouth, and internal recesses in the walls of said socket,,forming stop shoulders, the other member having an angular portion that substantially corresponds to the angular mouth of the socket and enters the same, said angular portion being partially rotatable within the socket and bearing against the stop shoulders, to limit such rotation, and said member when so rotated being interlocked against withdrawal from the socket.
3. In a structure of the character set forth, two members to be coupled, one of said mem-' bers having a socket that is of angular cross section an having an open mouth and being of substan ially the same cross sectional area in rear of the'mouth, said socket having internal recesses forming clearance spaces, and stop shoulders, the other member having an enlarged angular portion that is movable through the angular mouth of the socket into the same and is partially rotatable within the socket and recesses, abutting against the stop shoulders to limit such rotation, said recesses being longer than the angular enlairgement to permit a limited longitudinal r W 4:. In a structure of the character set forth, two members to "be coupled, one having a socket provided with an open mouth and a slot.cut into said member'and intersecting the socket, forming a stop shoulder, the other member having a portion entering the socket and partially rotatable therein, said latter member having a portion that abuts against the wall of the slot and limits the said rotation.
5."In a structure of the character set forth, two members to be coupled one having a socket provided with an open mouth, and a tangential slot cut into said member and intersecting the socket, forming a clearance space and a stop shoulder, the other ,nesses.
member having an angular portion that enters the socket and is partially rotatable therein and in the slot, said latter member abutting against the stop shoulder.
6. In astructure of the character setforth, two members to be coupled, one having a socket that is angular in cross section, and
slots cut into the member and intersecting the Walls of said socket, forming clearance spaces and stop shoulders,-the other member having an enlarged portion that is angular in cross section and removably engages in the socket, said angular portion being rotatable within the socket and in the slots and abutting against the walls of said slots.
7 In a structure of the character set forth, two members to be coupled, one having a socket that is angular in cross section, and slots cut through said member and intersecting the walls of the socket at an acute angle, the other member having an angular portion that detachably engages inthe socket andis, partially rotatable therein and in the slots, the walls of said slots constituting stop shoulders against which the angular faces of the last mentioned member abuts.
8. In a structure of the character set forth, a rotatable member having a socket that is angular 'in cross section and opening through one end of said member, and elongated slots cut through the member and intersecting the walls of the socket at an acute angle thereto, forming clearance spaces and stop shoulders, and another member having an angular enlargement, the cross sectional area of which corresponds substantially to 'the cross sectional area of the socket, said.
enlargement removably engaging in the socket and being partially rotatable therein, the face of said enlargement when so rotated abuting against the stop shoulders and the angular enlargement being then interlocked in the socket against withdrawal.
In testimony whereof I have'hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- WILLIAM A. SMITH. Witnesses:
