To all wwm t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. KEARNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Paper-Roll Holders, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention relates to paper roll holders and its object is a simple and compara tively inexpensive device for the retaining of rolls of toilet paper, paper towels, or the like, in which the paper is in a continuous length and preferably perforated at regular intervals whereby a portion desired for use may be readily separated from the roll, the arrangement of parts being such as to prevent the withdrawal of more than a single sheet at each actuation of the device.
A further obj ect is a device of the character stated in which rotation of the roll actuates mechanism adapted to limit the extent of such rotation and in this particular differs from my pending application, Serial- No. 740,382, filed J an. 6, 1913, in which the roll has a limited longitudinal movement determining the extent of its rotation. In
. the invention here disclosed, the roll is held from longitudinal movement and the rotation of the roll actuates other mechanism limiting the extent of its rotation, by which arrangement a further object of the invention is accomplished, namely; a holder having a length but slightly greater than the roll and therefore one that occupies relatively the least possible space.
A further object of the invention is a device of the character stated in which all mechanism and loose parts co-acting with the roll or utilized in holding the parts tothe invention are hereinafter more fully de scribed and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved paper roll holder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof on the center line of the roll. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the roll core and spindle on the line -m of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an end view of the roll core showing the filler by means of which a rotation of the roll produces a rotation of the roll spindle.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the drawings and specification.
The device consists of a bracket l adapted to be secured to a wall or other support in any convenient manner, as by means of screws through the apertures 2, 2, and is further provided with a fixed arm 3 and a hinged arm 4L. Pinned or otherwise secured to the fixed arm is a shaft 5 having a comparatively long portion 6 considerably less in diameter than the portion secured to the fixed arm. The pivoted arm 4 has fixedly secured thereto a comparatively short stud 7 having a recess in the inner end thereof into which the end of the portion 6 extends when the parts are in operative relation. Also fixedly secured to the shaft 5 is a tube 3 extending the full'length of the'portion 6 of the shaft centrally within which said portion 6 is positioned. rEhe tube 8 is provided with oppositely positioned longitudinally extending slots 9, 9 shown in Figs. 2 and 3 extending substantially the full length of the portion i, and on the portion 6 of the shaft is a follower l() provided with lugs 11, ll passing through the slots 9, 9 in the tube. Rotatably mounted on the tube is the roll spindle 12 square in cross-section and internally threaded at 13 having what is termed a double thread into which the lugs 1l, l1 on the' follower 10 extend respectively and a rotation of the spindle will cause the follower to travel longitudinally of the shaft by reason of its being held from rotation by the tube through which the lugs extend and a rotation of the spindle will Cause the lugs to travel in the threads as the spindle is, held from longitudinal movement by the fixed and pivoted arms heretofore mentioned. @n the portion 6 of the shaft is a coiled spring ltbetween the follower and the large end of the shaft 5; therefore forward rotation of the spindle and consequent movement of the follower toward the large end of the shaft compresses the coiled spring which, upon releasing of the spindle from forward rotation forces the follower toward its original position on the shaft and rotates the spindle in a reverse direction by reason of the lugs on the follower traversing the threads on the spindle which have a long pitch for this purpose. To prevent a sudden jar to the parts by this return of the follower, a spring buffer 15 is provided near the free end of the portion 6 which rests against a washer 16 secured to said portion 6 and the follower in returning under action of the spring 14 engages against the end of a spring 15 and lessens the shock due to each movement of the follower.
The Spindle 12 is provided with a slot 17 at one end in which slot is a spring controlled latch member 18 having a bent portion 19 engaging a circumferential groove 20 in the stud 7 when the parts are assembled, and, to disassemble the parts, it is necessary to depress the outer free end 21 of the lever 18 disengaging the bent end 19 from the groove 20 whereupon the pivoted arm 4 of the bracket may be swung to the right in the view presented in Fig. 2, in which position of the parts the roll core 22 may be removed from the spindle and a new roll and core placed thereon, the arm 4 then returned to the position shown in the ligure and locked by means of the lever 18. rlhe parts may not be unlocked until the paper has been removed from the core, when the core may be broken at that end adjacent the pivoted arm 4 and the lever 18 operated through the opening in the core thus provided.
In order that the spindle 12 may be positively rotated by rotation of the roll 23 and core 22, the core vis provided at each end with a thin metal plate or washer 24 having a square central aperture adapted to fit over the square spindle 12 and said plate is provided with preferably three lugs 25 which, when the plate is in position in the core, extend into apertures provided near each end of the core preventing their displacement prior to their beingplaced on the spindle.
In operation, the free end of the roll of paper is grasped by the hand and pulled forward producing a rotation of the roll and spindle on the tube 8, which rotation causes a movement of the follower 10 longitudinally on the portion 6 of the fixed shaft compressing the spring 14 and when the spring has reached the limit of its compression further rotation of the roll is impossible and as the distance between the perforations in the roll of paper is such as to be substantially equal to the amount possible to be rolled 0E at each actuation of the roll, the sudden stoppage of rotation of the roll causes the paper to part at the perforated line leaving a separated sheet in the hand of the operator and releasing the roll which then revolves in reverse direction under action of the spring 14 and leaving the free end of the paper depending in substantially the manner illustrated in Fig. 1 preparatory to a. successive operation.
From the foregoing description it becomes evident that the device is comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture and cntirely automatic in operation, the parts performing their function without thought upon the part of the operator further than to pull the paper to remove a sheet therefrom, and therefore a waste of paper is prevented, it not being possible to continuously rotate the roll and unwind more of the paper than is required for' use at'any one interval. By the arrangement of the parts described the device presents a very compact and neat appearance having a length but slightly greater than the roll itself and with all operable parts inclosed within the roll whereby displacement or disarrangement by accident or intent is obviated.
Having thus briefly described my invention, its utility and mode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat; ent of the United States is- 1. In apparatus of the character described, the combination with a bracket, of a support for paper rolls, a paper roll spindle rotatably mounted on the support, a follower on the support within the spindle, a spiral groove formed in the spindle and engaged by the follower whereby rotation of the spindle causes a movement of the fol" lower longitudinally of the support, and a spring limiting the longitudinal movement of the follower adapted to return the follower to its normal position upon release of the spindle from actuation.
2. In apparatus of the character dei scribed, the combination with a bracket provided with means for supporting a paper roll, of a paper roll spindle rotatably mounted relative to the support, a follower on the support within the spindle, means whereby rotation of the spindle causes a movement of the follower longitudinally of the support, and means for repositioning the follower for successive operations.

In a device of the character described, in combination with a bracket provided with means for supporting a paper roll, of a paper roll spindle rotatably mounted relative to the support, a. follower on the support within the spindle, means whereby rotation of the spindle causes a movement of the follower longitudinally of the support, said follower being held from rotation on the support, and means limiting the longitudinal movement of the follower adapted to return the follower to its original position for successive operations.
4. A device of the character described comprising in combination, a bracket, a support for a paper roll carried by the bracket, a hollow spindle for the paper roll rotatable relative to the support, a follower on the support within the spindle provided with lugs, a tube ixedly secured to the support, said tube having longitudinal slots through which the lugs on the follower proj ect, spiral grooves on the spindle engaged by said lugs on the follower whereby rotation of the spindle causes a movement of the follower longitudinally of the support, and a spring on the support adapted to resist said longitudinal movement of the follower and restore it to its normal position.

A device of the character described, comprising a bracket having a fixed and a pivoted arm, a paper roll support secured to the fixed arm, a spindle rotatably mounted on said support, means actuated by the rotation of the spindle limiting the extent of such rotation, a paper roll having a core, a plate near each end of the core apertured to engage the spindle, and locking means for securing the pivoted arm in operative relation with correlated parts, said locking means being covered by the core.

A device of the character described, comprising a bracket provided with a fixed and a pivoted arm, a shaft secured to the xed arm, a stub-shaft secured to the pivoted arm adapted to support the free end of the first named shaft, a hollow spindle on said shaft, a follower on the shaft within the spindle, means whereby rotation of the spindle causes a movement of the follower longitudinally of the shaft, a spring adapted to resist said longitudinal move# ment of the follower and return it to its original position upon release of the spindle, and a spring actuated locking lever adapted to engage a circumferential groove with which the stub shaft is provided, the paper roll providing a medium through which the spindle may be rotated.
7 In a holder for a rotatable paper roll, a support adapted to hold the roll from longitudinal movement, means movable longi tudinally of the support by rotation of the roll limiting the extent of rotation, and a spring placed under tension by movement of said means adapted to return said means and reversely rotate the roll to original position.
