Be it known that I, ADRIAN ETI-IELBERT Canirnn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Progress Works, Brook street, Manchester, England, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Appliances for Extracting or In serting 'Studs of Driving-Chains, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to appliances for extracting studs from, or inserting them into the linl rplates of driving chains-for instance when a damaged link is'to be replaced by a new one. The device is of the type wherein the link-plates are supported by the jaw of a cramp while the stud is beingforced out of or into position by a screw-stem or the like.
It is the principal object of the invention to provide appliances for extracting or inserting studs of driving chains, which shall be applicable to chains suchas are used on motor cycles and pedal cycles, and shall operate without tightening the link-plates against the roller and thus preventing it froni turning on the bush.
A' further object is to provide a tool which can be used with various sizes of chains.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a screwcramp; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the screw-cramp in a position for extracting a stud; Fig. 3 is aside elevation of the screwcramp with the fork hinged back and a chain link in the position for inserting a stud, and Fig. 4 isa perspective view of a screw-cramp with four movable forks.
Referring more particularly to Figs. '1, 2 and 3, c is the frame of a screw-cramp having a slotted jaw at a, and b is a fork pivoted to the said frame by means of a screw pin j. In the type of cramp illustrated, a screw-stem 61 works in a boss 6 formed on the frame 0. In Figs. 2- and 3 a piece of bush roller chain is shown in the cramp, in the positions for extracting and for inserting a stud respectively.
l/Vhen studs are to be inserted they will be already carried at one end by the outer linkplate 9 of Fig. 3. The other outer linkplate h is placed as in Fig. 3 to straddle the lot n of the jaw a, and the end of one stud f is then forced into the stud-hole by the thrust pin cl,which is screwed down onto the stud 7 as in Fig. 3. The stud at the other end of the link plate 9 is then forced into the link plate It in the same manner.
' When a stud is to be extracted the upper linkrulate (I, F s supported y the prongs of the fork 'b which are adapted to pass under and support the upper linkplate of the inner combination on each side of the roller, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper end of the stud can then be forced out of the upper link-plate g of the outercombination by means of the thrust pin d.
I Stud-cramps made in accordance with the present invention may be constructed to operate on a wider range of different sizes of chain by providing them with several forks one for each range of sizes. Then each fork can be used also as a jaw for the insertion of studs. Such a stud-cramp, with four forks, is shown in perspective in Fig. 4, although only three of the forks are visible. These forks b 72 b are formed on orattached to a boss is, which is adapted to slide to and fro, and also to turn upon, a cylindrical stub Z, which is carried at the lower end of the frame 0 by means of a boss m. This boss is provided with a ledge o to serve as a support for the free ends of the forks. The slots of the forks may be formed of gradually varying width, as shown in the fork 6 or they may be cut to one width part of the way, and of a narrower, width for the rest of the way, as shown in the fork o When a stud is to be extracted the boss 70 is pulled back along the stub Z until the free ends of the forks are clear of the support 0. A stop or enlarged end 79 prevents the boss 70 from coming off the stub Z. The chain-joint is then supported on the outer or end part of a fork of appropriate size, in the manner shown in Fig. 2; the boss is turned if necessary, so that when it is pushed forward again the free ends of the selected fork will be supported by the ledge 0'. The fork is then pushed forward until the stud is underneath the thrust pin 03, by which it can be forced out as already described. When a stud is to be inserted, the lower link-plate is laid on the top of the fork but nearer to its base, the fork then acting as the jaw a of Figs. 1 to 8; the chain-joint with the link-plate already carrying the Studs in place is held in position above it, so that the stud can be forced home by the thrust pin d. In the figure the fork in use is shown in the position which it would occupy when a stud is to be inserted; when a stud is to be extracted the fork would be drawn back a little along the stub Z, to bring the center of the wider part of the slot underneath the thrust pin d. It will be obvious that when there is a set of forks b as in Fig. 4, a fork which is used for extracting studs from chains of one size, will serve also for the insertion of studs in chains of the next larger size. I
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
1.- A chain cramp for use in extracting and inserting the studs of driving chains, comprising a thrust-pin, a fork adapted to pass between the links of a chain, a frame carrying the thrust-pin, means for movably supporting the fork on the frame and permitting it to be adjusted in position relatively to the thrust-pin, and means for operating the thrust-pin.
2. A chain cramp for use in extracting and inserting the studs of driving chains, comprising a thrustpin, a frame carrying the same and means for operating the thrustpin, a forkand means for carrying the same in a movable manner on the frame, said fork having jaws wider at one partthan another, and adapted to pass between the links of a chain and to support the inner upper linkplate while the stud. is being forced out of the outer upper link-plate.
3. A chain cramp for use in extracting and inserting the studs of driving chains, comprising a thrust-pin, a frame carrying the same, means for operating the thrustpin, a stub on the frame, a boss adapted to slidethereon, a fork on said boss, said fork being wider at its'outer part than at its rear part, the outer part beingv adapted to pass between the links of a chain when a stud is to to be removed, and the rear part of the fork being adapted to support the outer link plate of'a chain when a stud is to be forced thereinto, while the movements of the boss on the stub enable either part of the fork to be brought into line with the thrustpin.
4. A chain cramp for use in extracting and inserting the studs of driving chains, comprising a frame, a thrust pin carried thereon, means for operating the thrust pin, a stub, a boss adapted to slide and to turn thereon, and a plurality of forks on said boss, said forks being of different widths one from another, whereby one or other fork can be brought into position in line with the thrust pin according to the dimensions of the chain to be operated upon.

A chain cramp for use in extracting and inserting the studs of driving chains, comprising a thrust pin, a frame carrying the same, means for operating the thrust pin, a stub on the frame, a boss adapted to slide thereon, a fork on said boss, said fork being wider at its outer part than at its rear part, the outer part being adapted to pass between the links of a chain when a stud is to be removed, and the rear part of the fork being adapted to support the outer link plate of a chain when a stud is to be forced thereinto, a ledge on the frame over which the end of av fork can slide when in line with the thrust pin, said ledge being adapted to assist in bearing the thrust on the fork during the extraction and removal of studs from a chain, while the sliding movement is sufiicient to withdraw the fork from the ledge in order to permit of the insertion of the fork between the links of a chain.
