Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 19916.
Application filed September 13, 1916. Serial No. 119,841.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that 1, CHARLES J. Soss, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the to same.
This invention relates to hinges and particularly to what are known as invisible hinges, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class in which the construction of the hinge, or a part thereof, is improved'and' simplified, and the cost thereof reduced, while at the same time the hinge is made more strong and durable. This improvement in hinges relates partic- 2o ularly to hinges of the class described and claimed in U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,078,- 703 dated November 18, 1913, and 1,153,720 dated September 14, 1915, in which are shown and described hinges of the class specified particularly designed for use in connection with the doors of automobiles and similar vehicles, and the invention described and claimed herein relates particularly to the hinge butt or member which is connected with, or used. in connection with,
the door; and said invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:-
Figure 1 is a face view of a complete hinge involving my invention, part of the conqa struction being broken away; Fig. 2 a trans verse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a perspective view of a complete hinge arm forming part of the hinge butt or member which is connected with the door or other swinging part in the use of the hinge; and, Fig. 4 a plan view of the hinge arm shown in Fig. 3 and indicating one of the attachments of said arm.
In the accompanying drawing, I have my shown, in Fig. 1, a complete hinge of the class specified involving my invention, and comprising in its construction two hinge butts or members a and Z), and the hinge butt or member a, in practice, is secured to the door frame and countersunk therein in the usual manner, and the hinge butt or member Z) is secured to the door in the usual manner.
The hinge butt a comprises, in the construction shown, a box member a open at (so the front and'provided with oppositely and laterally directed wing members a having screw-holes a through which are passed screws to secure said part of the hinge to a door frame.
The wing members a are provided centrally thereof with approximately semi-cir cular recesses a which open inwardly, and placed in the hinge butt or member a or the box-shaped portion thereof, is a U-shaped butt member 0 having oppositely directed wing portions 0 which fit in the recesses a and are secured therein by screws 0 which rigidly secure the parts a and 0 together, and these parts constitute the complete hinge butt which, in practice, is secured to the door frame or stationary member. The parts a and c which make up the hinge butt which is secured to the door frame or stationary member, are the same as in other hinges of this class, and in the patents hereinbefore referred to and form no part of this invention.
The hinge butt or member Z) which, in the use of the hinge, is secured to a door or other swinging member is composed of a plate shaped head 6- and an approximately L-shaped arm 6 the longer part of which isprovided with an approximately triangular head 5 and the shorter part of which consists of a head portion Z9 at an. acute angle to the longer part, and said arm 6 is made up of separate similar parts Z) stamped from sheet metal and connected by rivet pins Z2 passed through apertures b and the separate head portions Zfi'and b thereof, and the part Z) of the arm 6 is provided in the end portion thereof with an aperture Z9 through which ispassed the pivot pin d by which the arm 6 is pivoted in the yokeshaped butt member 0 as in other hinges of this class.
The plate-shaped head 6 of the hinge butt member Z) is also preferably stamped from sheet metal, and formed centrally therein is a longitudinal aperture 5 and the head part b of the arm 6 or the separate parts 79 thereof, are provided with lugs or projections Z2 which are passed through said aperture and which together snugly fill 1 said aperture, and the lugs or projections Z9 are headed or riveted to secure the arm 12 to the platemember 6 or the plate member b to said arm, and said plate member 6 is provided with screw apertures 6 through which are passed screws to secure involving the plate or head member Z2 in the arm member 5 may be composed entirely of sheet steel, and the construction thereof is thus simplified and cheapened, and said part made more strong anddurable than by other process of construction heretofore known.
In the construction herein shown and described that side portion of the hinge butt or member a over which the hinge butt or member 6 swings is cut out to form a longitudinal recess a which will permit of greater movement of the hinge butt or member Z) and greater movement of the door, but this feature of construction is immaterial and forms no part of this invention, which is limited to the construction of the hinge butt or member 6, as herein shown and described, and as pointed out in the accompanying claims. a
With the hinge herein shown and described, as with others of its class, the arm member 6 of the'hinge butt member 6 is pivotally connected With the supplemental butt member 0 of the main hinge butt member a, but the butt member 0 is detachable from the main hinge butt member a and a door having my improved hinge or hinges may be detached from the frame in which the door is mounted without detaching the main hinge butt member a from the frame by simply removing the screws 0 and detaching the supplemental hinge butt member c from the main hinge butt member a.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hinge butt or member comprising a plate-shaped head and an approximately L-shaped ar'm composed of separate similar sheet metal parts riveted together and secured to said head.
2. A hinge butt or member composed of a plate-shaped head having a central longitudinal aperture, and an approximately L-shaped arm consisting of separate similar sheet metal parts riveted together, the longer portion of said arm being provided with an approximately triangular head formed by said separate parts thereof, and the separate parts being provided with lugs or projections which pass through said aperture and are secured therein.
3. A hinge butt or member comprising an approximately L-shaped arm having a plateshaped head member secured on the end of the longer part of said arm, said plateshaped head member being provided with a central longitudinal aperture, and said arm being composed of separate similar parts having lugs or projections which are passed through said apertures and which are secured therein and to said head member.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 11th day of September, 1916.
