ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Bee. 12, 1916..
Application filed January 21, 1915. Serial No. 3,4%9.
To all wrmt t may concern.'
Be it known that l, JOHN JAY Lnrrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in a certain advertising device for which Letters Patent of the United States, No. 1,029,618 was issued to me June 18, 1912. By the device shown in said patent a single figure representing Satan is located above a hollow member representing a persons foot, such iigure being provided with a spear, which vis adapted by the operation of the mechanism inclosed in the foot to be brought in contact with corns upon the toes of the foot. By my improvement, however, one or more figures are preferably employed in connection with an electric motor located within a cigar or other hollow object. One of said gures representing Satan with a spear in his hands, which is adapted to be automatically brought in contact with a hatchet aii'ixed to said cigar, while the other figure is supposed to represent an Indian with a cigar in his hand, and the motor located in the lirst mentioned cigar is adapted to bring the spear in contact with said hatchet, while the cigar carried by the Indian is brought in close proximity to the mouth of such lndian.
invention herein is predicated more especially upon the mechanism for operating a plurality of figures in connection with the device to be advertised, also upon the device for supporting the name of the cigar or manufacturer of the device, to be advertised, upon one or both of the sides of the same.
My invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view thereof. Fig. 2 is a vertical section drawn on line of Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the cigar shown in Fig. 1,- the images on said cigar being shown part in section.
Like parts are identified by the same reference numerals throughout the several views.
While l have shown the images referred to in connection with a cigar, I wish it to be understood that any other article of manufacture or sale may be substituted therefor, and while l have shown the operative mechanism connected with iigures representing Satan and an indian, I do not wish to con` line or limit myself to the exact figures shown, as invention is not predicated upon the images as such.
1u represents a cigar.
2 represents Satan.
3 represents an Indian.
The figures 2 and 3 are connected with the exterior upper side of the cigar 1.
l is a motor of ordinary construction. Motion is communicated from the motor f1 to the image 2 through the sh'aft 5, worm gear 6, gear wheel 7, crank 8, link 9, rod 10,
and pivotallbolt 11. The limbs 12 or lower part of the image 2 are preferably rigidly connected with the upper side of the cigar, while the upper part 13 of the image is connected with the lower part by the pivotal bolt 14T, whereby with each revolution of the gear 7 the upper part 13 of said image is caused to move upwardly and downwardly and thereby bring` the spear 15 in contact with or in close proximity to the hatchet 16, while at the same time an electric circuit is automatically closed with the lamp 17 located upon the upper end of the spear, and with the lamps 18, 18 located in said cigar, whereby said lamps are lighted and the attention of the public is thereby attracted to the cigar. The body of the image 3 is rig` idly connected with the upper surface of the cigar, while the arm 19 of said image is connected with the crank 8 through the rod 20, elbow crank lever 21, shaft 22, lever 23 and pivotal bolt 24, whereby with each revolution of the wheel 7 the arm 19 is raised and lowered, whereby the cigar 23 is brought in contact with or in close proximity to the lips 24 of the figure 3. 25 represents the source of electrical energy, which may be a storage battery, a dynamo or any wellknown source of electrical power. The power is communicated from the source 25 to the motor lthrough the wire 26. 27 is a switch by which electric circuit through the wire 28 is closed between the motor and said source of power. An electric circuit is formed between the source of power 25 and the electric lamps 17 and 18, through the wires 29, switch 30, wire 31, wire 32, which wire 32 leads to said lamp 18', and thence back to the source of electrical energ through the wires 33 and 26. Thus it is obvious that when the switch 27 is in the position shown in Fig. 3 the circuit will be closed between the source Vof electrical energy 25, the motor 4, the lamps 17, 18 and 18 and the operative mechanism of the device, whereby the device will be caused vto operate so long as the electric current is f maintained.
The cigar or other ligure 1 is provided upon one or both of its sides with supporting flanges 84 for a trade name, and said flanges 34 are each provided with grooves 35 'for the yreception of the trade name 3G, while, of course, the names or characters of said trade Iname maybe changed to correspond with the name of the device which is being advertised.
The gear wheel 7 is revolu'bly supported from the respectivesides ofthe cigar 1 upon the shaft '37 vthrough the collars 38, while the worm shaft v6 is supported from the cigar 11 or `other Y article of commerce ythrough the `bracket 39.
It will Ibe understood that the rod 20 'is connected with the elbow crank 21 through the -sleeve 40, spiral spring 41, sliding vknob 42, and pivotal bolt 43, while the shaft Y10 is connected with the sleeve 44 through the spiral spring 45 and slidable knob 46, where by a certainV amount of lost motion is -produced between the movement of said rods 10 and 20 'and `the mechanism with which said sleeves and 46 are connected with each revolution ofthe wheel 7, whereby one memberofthe switch 30 is brought i'nto and out of contact with the stationary terminal 30', thereby causing the lamps 17, f18 and 18 to remain lightedY a brief interval of time with the forward and backward vmovement of said rods 10 and 20. The parts 21 and 30 are connected with the opposing inner walls of the inclosure 1 by brackets in any convenient manner.
One member of the switch 30 Vis moved out of contact with the member '30 with each revolution ofthe wheel 7, motion bein'g'com municated from said wheel to said member 30 `through 4the crank 8, rod 20 and sleeve Copies o'f this patent may lbe obtained for 40, said sleeve 40 being permanently connected with the member 30.
The lelectric circuit is closed between the wires 29 and 31 by bringing the switch member 30 'into Contact with the member 30 and said switch member 30 is moved into and out of contact with the member 31 by and with-each revolution of the gear 7.
Having thus described my invention what l claim as new, andfdesire to secure by Letters Patent, lis:-
1. l11n a device of the described class, the combination of a source-of electrical energy, a hollow 'ligure representing a cigar, a ltrade name supported -upon said :hollow ligure,
twomoving figures connected with said reprcsentation of a cigar, one of said figures carrying a `spear andthe other avcigar, aplurality of electric lamps, amotor, `means for communicating motion from said -motor to said images, spea'r a-nd cigar and means yfor communicating vlight to said lamps both within and outside said representation of a cigar.
2. In a device of 'the described class, the combination of a source of 'electrical energy, ahollow `figure representing a cigar, atrade name on said figure, yone or more movable images located -up'o'nthe exterior surface of saidhollow figure, one carryinga spear and the other a cigar, an electric light supported on sai-d spear, 'a plurality of electric lamps connected iwith said figure, an electric motor located within said hollow ligure, means for communicating electrical energy from said vsource of power to said motor, means for communicatingmotion 'from said motor to said images, and means yfor communicating electric light from said source of power to said lamps, on said spear and within said cigar all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
ln testimony whereof -I aliix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. JOHN JAY LEPPER.
