Application filed December 27, 1915.
b all whom t may concern:
te it known that l, JOHN B. HABERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at lleron Lahe, in the county of Jackson anl State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Platforms for Doorways; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in inclined platforms for doorways and to the hinges therefor, the primary object of the invention being` to provide a structure which is especially applicable for attachment to barn door sills, and the platform when not in use is enabled to be swung vertically and laterally out of position at one side of the door.
A further object of the invention is to provide a structure of this character which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very efficient in operation.
TWith these and numerous other objects in view7 the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts which will hereinafter be more particularly described and claimed, and pointed out in the accompanying drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure lis a side elevation showing` my hinge applied, with the platform in lowered position; Fig. EZ is a horizontal section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is the same as Fig'. l only showing the platform in raised position; Fig. 4l is a detail top plan view of the hinge, with the platform in lowered position; Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4c; Fig. 6 is a vertical section taken on the line 6 6 of Fig. el; and, Fig. 7 is a section taken on the line 7 7 of 3.
his type of platform with its improved hinge is adapted to be applied to various uses, but in the present embodiment of my invention, l have shown the same applied to the door sill at the entrance to a barn, which well illustrates its function and operation. l do not, however, wish to be limited to any particular use, as my invention is applicable for use in a nurnber of various places.
Specification of Letters Eatent.

Serial No. 68,753.
The type of barn which l have partially illustrated in the drawings consists of a wall which is supported at its lower end upon a concrete sill C .vhich thereby spaces the same from the ground or floor Gr. The wall B is provided with an opening or entrance A whose lower edge is the top of the sill C. This type of barn is commonly used, and in the passage of loaded vehicles into and out of the same, it is always necessary to bring into use some type of platform for carrying the vehicle over the sill. For this purpose l have provided the entrance A with a platform P which is of the usual type employed, being substantially rectangular and of a size that conforms to the width of the door opening.
new and improved hinge comprises two separate bars l and 2, the bar l being provided with a plurality of spaced openings 3 which are adapted to receive any desired form of fastening means so that the same may be firmly secured to the sill C a short distance below the opening` A in the wall of the barn. At one end of the bar l which is designated by the numeral lis positioned a ll-shaped member 5, having an opening 6 in its base portion which is adapted for alinemeut with an opening 7 through the bar l. Positioned through thev alining openings is some form of securing means 8 which .is adapted to pivotally connect these two parts. By this means, it will be obvious that the itl-shaped member 5 will be swiveledv upon the bar 1 and will be adapted to rotate in all directions in a single plane with respect thereto.
The arms of the til-shaped member 5 have alining apertures 9 and l0 therethrough which are adapted to receive a pintle 11 that may be secured through said alining open# ings in any desired manner. The type of pintle shown in the accompanying drawings comprises a headed bolt positioned through the alining openings in said arms and secured firmly with respect thereto by means of a nut l2 on the threaded end of the same. The platform P which is used in the embodiment of this invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, has secured to its lower surface at one side and projecting from the edge of the same disposed contiguous the .sill of the oygiening1 A, the bar 2, This bar 2 projects a short distance from said lower edge but the portion that is in contact with the surface of the platform is provided with a plurality ofspaced openings 13 which are adapted to receive any desired type of fastening means that will securely hold the same in engagement with the vsaid platform. The projecting end of the bar 2 that is designated by the numeral le has its eXtrem-ity bent loop shaped and loosely surrounding the pintle 1l .that is held between the arms of the swiveled member 5. By .this connection, it will be obvious that the bar 2 will be hingedly connected with the .said swivel and will ybe adapted to swing vertically with respect to lthe same.
By the above described Aconnection and application, when they parts of .this device are positioned as shown in the accompanying drawings, .the platform P will have one of its edges disposed adjacent the upper edge of the .sill C at the opening A and its opposite edge resting upon the ground or floor, thereby providing means for affording easy access'to loaded vehicles through the y entrance .to the barn. When it .is desired -to lift .the platform P from .the abo-.ve described position, it is only Iviecessary -to raise the same vertically which may be accomplished owing .to .the hinged connection between 'the bar 2 and .the .swiveled member 5, and then swing the .same laterally, whereby it may be moved to .one side .of the .entrance A .as clearly illustrated in lfull llines in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
` By the above ,described construction, it will ,be seen vthat my invention 1consists of .a pair of .bars having a jointed connection that enables one .of the side bars to swing vertieally as Well as horizontally jointed connection comprises a swiveled, as Well. es a .hinged Connection between the ends of said bars as has been hereinbefore fully Vdescribed ,and pas `clearly shown in the accompanying drawings.- Thetype Ofhinse may be employed to various 1156s which its func-.tion renders it applicable for. The eX- This treme simplicity of construction, and the efficiency of the device in operation, makes it a very nseful device lof this character.
Freni. .the foregoing .description of the construction of my improved device, .the manner of applying the same to use, `and the operation thereof will be readily understood and .it will be seen that l have provided a simple, 'inexpensive and eiiicient means for carrying out the objects of the invention.
I claim .as my invention:
l. The combination with a wall having an opening therethrough with its lower edge spaced from the floor; of a platform extending from said lower edge to the floor, and said platform having a jointed connection between one side of the edge adjacent the opening and the wall, whereby the same is adapted to be raised vertically and swung laterally .to one side of the opening when not in use.
2. The combination with a wall having an opening therethrough, with its lower edge spaced from the floor; of a platform extending from said lower edge to the floor, and a combined hinge and swivel connecting the platform and wall whereby the platform may be raised vertically and swung laterally .to one side .of the opening when not 1n use.
3. The combination with a wall havino an opening therethrough, with its lower edge spaced from Ethe floor; of a platform extendfrom said lower edge to the licor, a b .ar secured to said platform and projecting from its edge, a swivel secured to the wall, and a hinged connection between said swivel and zthe .projecting end of the bar.
l. The .combination with a wall having an opening '.therethrough, with its lower edge spaced from the floor; of a platform .extending from said Ilower edge to the floor, a bar secured to `the lower surface of said platform and .projecting from the same adjacent yelle side, an additional bar secured to the wall adjacent one side of the lower edge of ysaid bar, a substantially yU-shaped member having its base rotatably connected with said last mentioned bar, a pintle between the alIHS of said member, and the projecting end .of the bar on said platform hingedly connected with the pintle.
,In .testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
