To all whom it may camera:
Be it known that 1, JOHN A. Bnnonnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake Park, in the county oi Becker and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grainv Tanks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is tdprovidc a tank so constructed that it may be fitted to rest and be held on the bolsters of a wagon to take the place of the boX and one which when fitted to place is very rigid forming substantiallya part of the wagon.
A further object is to so connect the parts of the tank that the tank may be knocked down or the parts may be separated to facilitate handling in shipping and in placing the tank on the wagon. and further to so constructthe structure that parts may be re moved and a standard form and size of wagon box will. yet be retained.
With other objects in view, which will be referred to, my invention consists in the peculiar combination and novel arrangement of the parts, such as will be hereinafter more fully described in connection with the accent panying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of one adaptation of my improved tank. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view through the tank looking toward the rear end. 3 is a view in top plan of the rear end of the tank. Fig. l is a detail perspective view to show the means for holding the end gate in place. Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the angle braces used to give strength to the structure of the tank. Fig. 6 is transverse vertical sectional view through one side of the tank showing the members comprising this side in their detached position. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary detail sectional view to show the interlocking connection between the members of the side. Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 2 to show a slightly modi ficd form which my invention might take.
The tank comprises a bottonrmember or lioor 1 preferably composed of a single sheet of metahand this body member has cross members 2 in the present instance disclosed as channel iron secured thereto at several points along its length to give additional strength; While I have shown and shall describe the bottom member 1 and the other members comprising the tank as composed 0% sheet metal, it will. be understood that these parts might as readily be built up of wood properly reinforced by cross braces. The bottom n'lember l is stopped at its edges a short distance from the end of the cross braces 2 and these edges are bent to form flanges 3 and 4%.
The side members 5 and 6 reinforced by transversely extending channel pieces .7 and 8 have flanges and 10, respectively formed on their lower edges and these flanges are so constructed that they lit within and engage the flanges 3 and at of the bottom member 1 to form a tight joint. The side members 5 and 6 have rolled flanges formed on their upper edges as better shown'in Fig. 7. Extension side members 11 and 12 are constructed to fit and be secured above the side members 5 and (3 and are flared as better shown in Fig. 2 to give greater capacity to the tank. These extension sides 11 and 1'2 have grooved flanges 13 and 14: provided on their lower edges to engage with and fit over the rolled flanges 1.5 and 16 of. .he side members 5 and 6, respectively and this interlocking connection between the side members and the extension side members together with the interlocking connection between the side members and the bottom member form a structure the side walls and bottom or floor of which are substantially one piece. The extension side members 11 and 12 have channel irons 17 and 18 secured thereon to be in alinement with the channel pieces 7 and 8 of the side members 5 and 6 and these alined channel pieces are disposed along the side members to be in vertical alinement with the cross braces 2 of the bottom member 1.
An end gate 19 is received between the side members 5 and 6 at the tail end of the tank to rest against the upper face of the floor member 11.; an extension cud gate 20 having its end shaped to conform to the inner contour oi the extension side members 11 and 12 is mounted to rest at its lower edge upon the upper edge of the end gate 19 between these extension side members, and a like end gate and extension and gate are provided at the forward end of the tank. To insure that this end gate and extension. end gate are at all times held against lateral or side movement, the angle irons 21 are secured to the side members and extension side members to have their at faces disposed toward the end of these members, and a second angle iron is mounted adjacent the flat face the angle irons 21 to extend parallel therewith and to have sliding connection on the pins 23 which pass through slots formed through the angle iron 22. Brackets are each. of the members adjacent the angle iron 22 and clain 'iing bolts 26 are threaded through these brackets 25 to engage with the flange of the angle iron and clamp this angle iron against the end gate and the extension end gate which is held on its opposite side by one of the angle irons 21.
11 opening 27 is formed through the end gate 19; guides 28 are secured transversely of the end gate 19 adjacent the edgesjof the opening 27 and these guides are made continuous to the top of the end gate 20 by guides 29 secured thereto in vertical alinement with the guides 28. A slide 30 is mounted to move in the guides 28 and 29 to a position to close over the opening 27 and a handle 31 is secured at its lower end to the plate 30 and is passed up through guides 32 to; a point where it is accessible to be manu- "ally raised or lowered to move the plate 30. A hand set screw 33 is provided through one of the brackets 32 to e screwed in. against the handle 31 to hold the plate 30 in its adjusted position.
The channel pieces 7 and 8 secured to the side members 5 and 6 have notches 3.4 and 35 formed through the sides thereof; angle brackets 36 and 37 sides of the angle pieces 17 and 18 of the extension side members 11 and 12 and on their lower end are provided With pins 38 and 39 to be received in the notches 34 and 35, respectively. These angle brackets, ture of which is better disclosed in Fig. 5, are ofashape to lit the Hare of the extension side members place hold earings 40. The braces 41 are made adjustable by turnbuckles 43 working on right and left hand threads on the the front bolster of the wagon and channel- 111 a vertical position on irons 46 are secured of each of are pivoted between the,

This channel iron 45 is secured at such a. position that the rear olster comes within one of the cross-brace channel irons 2 of the bottom member clamp bolts l7 ma be provided through one side of this channel iron to be screwed up against the bolster to hold the tank in place. In some instances it may be found desirable to connect the truss rods 48 between two of the cross members 2 of the bottom member 1 and to provide these truss members with turnbuckles 49 so that they can be tightened to prevent sagging of the bottom member under excessive load.
11 use, the parts are assembled as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, and are held rigidly in their assembled position by the tightening of the adjustable braces 41 thus making-a complete tank, but, when it is desired to remove the extension sides and the extension end gate to provide merely aibox for the wagon, this is accomplished by releasing these adjustable braces 41 from the bearlugs 40 on the cross channel irons 2 of the body member, which permit the parts to be swung to the position disclosed in Fig. 6. iYhen the adjustable braces are released the pins 38 and 39 may be very readily removed from the notches 34 and and the adjustable side members can be entirely separated from the side members 5 and 6 which comprise the body of the box of the wagon, also the extension end gate can be removed.
In the disclosure in Fig. the lower part of the tank is varied slightly from the structure hereinbefore described. In this disclosure the side members 5 and 6 are made as a continuation of the bottom or floor 1 of the tank and their point of connection is made a gradual curve. In this adaptation the channel members 7' "and 3 secured to the side members 5' and 6' would be at their lower ends connected with the cross members 2 secured to the bottom 1. otherwise the structure is identical with the disclosure of the preferred form and like reference characters have been applied.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided be fitted on a wagon, comprising few parts in manufacture and assemblage and which may be handled in knock-down form and when assembled present a structure as rigid and substantial as though. the parts and a grain tank constructed to I -me1nber, side members mounted on said bot tom member-to be detachable therefrom, em

A grain tank comprising'a sheet metal bottom member provided with upturned flanges atv the edgesthereofi'side members provided with flanges to ,be received in interlocking relation. with the flanges of the bottom member tobe detachably mounted thereon, extension side members mounted on the sides of the body as hereinbeitore set lorth, and means connected between the body portion and the extension side men1- bers to hold said extension side members and the sides rigidly connected with the bottom till member.

A grain tank comprising a bottom member, side members mounted to have interlocking connection with said bottom member andto be detachable therefrom, extension side members mounted on said side members and flared therefrom to make the tank in the upper part of greater transverse dimension, angle brackets connected between said side members and extension side members to rest within the angle'formed by the flare of the extension side members, and adjustable means connected between the extension side members and thebottom member to engage with the brackets and hold all of the parts rigidly connected together.

A grain, tank comprising a bottom member, side memb'ers mounted to have interlocking connection with saidbottom. member and to be detachable therefrom, extenmembers mounted on the sides of said body ,tension side members and the sides of said sion side members mounted on said side members and flared therefrom to make the extension side members and the bottom member to engage and cooperate with said brackets to hold the structure rigidly connected together.
