and useful improvements in Sets of Toy l of three blocks of different sizes.
Building-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a set of toy building blocks such as may be used by small children in the construction of buildings, bridges, and the like, and it has for its object 'the provision of means for locking the various blocks together so that the structure erected may be moved bodily without liability of the different parts becoming separated.
The invention consists in a plurality 0 blocks having projections adapted to enter depressions in other blocks to prevent lateral movement of the various blocks relatively to each other, the set of blocks being provided with perforated flanged plates adapted to be used for a support for the blocks and as a retainer for the upper layers of blocks, said plates being connected .together by suitable locking members.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinafter glven.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention one'preferred form thereof is illustrated in the drawings, this form having been found to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and that the invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Of the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan of a structure erected with a set of blocks embodying the principles of the present invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the same on line 22 on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a plan of one of the perforated plates. Fig. 1 represents a section of the same on line 44 on Fig. 3. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 represent perspective views Fig. 8 represents a plan of one form of connector.
Fig. 9 represents a section on line 9 Fig. 8. Fig. 10 represents an elevation partly in section of one of the Sections of the locking members. Fig. 11 represents a similar view of one of the intermediate seetions thereof, and Fig. '12 represents an elevation of the clamping member.

In the drawings, 10 is a base plate having a plurality of perforations 11 therein provided with a downwardly extending flange 12. This base plate 10 is also provided with a central perforation 13 through which is adapted to extend the threaded shank 14 of a section of an upright rod 15. The shank 14 is threaded to a nut 16 beneath the base plate 10, said nut 16 having an upwardly extending lug 17 adapted to be positioned in one of the perforations 11 to prevent said nut from turning when the upright rod 15 is being threaded thereto.
Superimposed upon the base plate 10 are a plurality of building blocks 18, 19, and 20 of different sizes, these blocks having projections 21 on one face adapted to enter depressions 22 formed in other blocks.
To further lock the various blocks together in adjaci at layers and prevent the lateral separation thereof, a tie or connecting member 23 is adapted to be used. This connecting member is made of thin metal and has a plurality of openings 24: therethrough spaced apart a distance equal to the spacing of the projections 21 on the various blocks 18, 19, and 20.
' "When a certain number of layers of blocks has been built, one of the plates 10 may be superimposed thereon with the flange 12 extending over the upper course or layer. If it is desired to go no higher in the building construction, a clamping member 25 may be threaded to the threaded socket 26 at the upper, end of therod section 15. This will lock the structure solidly to gether so that it can be readily moved Without danger of displacement of any of the units forming the structure.
llf it is desired to build higher, other courses or layers of building blocks may be superimposed upon the top plate 10, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The projections 21 extending through the openings 11 in the said plate at intervals in the structure, other connecting plates 23 i may be used as indicated at 23*, it being b vious in the set of building blocks that these plates will be provided of various lengths. On the upper course of blocks will be superimposed another perforated plate 27 with its flange 28 extending over the edges of the upper course of blocks. -Betweenthe plates 27 and the top plate 10 will be interposed a rod section 15, the shank of which isthreaded to the threaded socket in the lower rod section, while the threaded shank 29 of the clamping member will be threaded to the threaded socket of the upper rod section.
In the set of blocks the rod sections will be provided of diflerent lengths, and-the perforated plates 10 and 27 will be made of difierent sizes. By the use of the various units forming the set of blocks, any construction of building may be erected and firmly locked together by means of the perforated plates, rod sections, and connecting plates.
The structure may be erected on a single base plate 10 as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, or it may be erected on a plu-' rality of these base plates with connecting plates 23 superimposed thereon and locked thereto by means of the projections 21 extending through the perforations 24 therein and the perforations 11in the base plates 10.
The advantage of providing in toy building. constructions means whereby the entire structure erected may be locked firmly to gether so that the structure may be moved from place to place is so apparent as to nee no further description.
It is believed that the operation and many advantages of this invention will be full understood from the foregoing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A set of toy building blocks consisting of a plurality of blocks provided with projections adapted to enter depressions in other blocks and thin connectors adapted to be interposed between two layers of blocks and provided v with a plurality of holes through which said projections may extend.
2. A set of toy building blocks consisting of a plurality of blocks provided with projections adapted to enter depressions in other blocks and form parallel walls and means interposed between two layers of blocks and adapted to prevent lateral separation of said walls. e
3. A set of toy building blocks consisting of a plurality of blocks provided with projections adapted to enter depressions in other blocks and form parallel walls and thin metal stripsinterposed between two layers of blocks and adapted to prevent lateral separation of said walls.
4. A set of toy building blocks consisting of a plurality of blocks provided with projections adapted to enter depressions in other blocks and a base plate provided withopenings to receive the projections of a plurality of blocks superimposed thereon.
5. A set of toy building blocks consisting of a plurality of blocks provided with projections adapted to enter depressions in other blocks and a flanged base plate provided with openings to receive the projections of a plurality of blocks superimposed thereon.
6. A set of toy building blocks consisting of a plurality of blocks provided with projections adapted to enter depressions in other blocks and a top plate having a flange adapted to inclose the upper portions of a plurality of blocks and prevent their lateral separation.
