WALTER D. BUTZ, OF
NORRISTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR '10 PARAMOUNT HOSIERY FORM DRYING 00., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
STOCKING-DRYING FORM.
Application filed July 10, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VALTER D. BUTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing in Norristown, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Stocking Drying Forms, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to so construct a stocking drying form that the length of the foot portion thereof or the width of the leg portion can be varied without mate rially changing the conformation of said foot and leg portions in other respects, and another object is to eifect the widening of the leg portion without, at the same time, widening the foot. These objects I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a stocking drying form constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line a-a, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 12-42, Fig. 1; Fig. 4: is an enlarged side elevation of the foot and ankle portions of the form showing the foot portion contracted to its fullest extent; Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the foot portion lengthened to its fullest extent; Fig. 6 is a transverse section on the line 0-0, Fig. 4; Fig. 7 is a transverse section on the line d-d, Fig. 1; Fig.
'8 is a view looking in the direction of the arrow m Fig. 4; Fig. 9 is a view looking in the direction of the arrow y Fig. 5; Fig. 10 is a transverse section on the line e'e, Fig. 5; Fig. 11 is a transverse section on the line f-f, Fig. 5; Fig. 12' is a perspective View on a reduced-scale showing, separated from one another, the stationary and adjustable members of the foot portion of the form, and Fig. 13 is a section on the line g--g, Fig. 5.
The drying form may be constructed either of Wood or metal, or with a metal foot portion and a wooden leg portion, and the metal portion may be internally chambered or channeled. as shown for instance by dottedlines in Figs. 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 for the re- .ception or circulation of steam O'rother heating agent.
The form comprises a a leg portion 2 as usual, but the foot portion 1 and foot portion has an extensible toe member 1 so that Specification of Letters Patent.
has upper and lower wings Patented Dec. 5, 1916.
Serial No. 39,123.
it can be shortened or lengthened, as shown, respectively, in Figs. 4 and 5, and the leg portion has an extensible front member 2 so that it can be narrowed or widened, as shown, respectively, by full and dotted lines, or by dot-and-dash lines in Fig. 1.
The foot portion of the form has central longitudinal slots at top and bottom as indicated at 3, these slots communicating at the toe end of the foot portion with a connectmg slot 4 and the leg portion of the form has in the front of the same a central vertical slot 5 for the reception of the front member 2 which is pivoted at its lower end at the base of the ankle portion of the leg, as shown at 6 in Fig. 1, the member 2 and the slot 5 for the reception of the same, gradually increasing in depth from the lower to the upper end, asshown, in Fig. 1, so that by drawing forwardly the front member 2 a gradual increase in the width of the leg portion of the form, from the foot to the top may be effected, as shown by dot-anddash lines in Fig. 1, without in any way affooting the shape of the foot portion of the form.
The extensible toe member 1 of the foot 7 fitted to the upper and lower slots 3, the main web 8 of the toe member entering the slot 4 at the forward end of the foot so as to properly guide the toe member 1 in its forward and backward movements. Said member 1 may be further guided and steadied in its movements by providing each of the slots 3 with a forwardly projecting tenon 1.1 adapted to engage a mortise 12 in the upper or lower tongue 7 of the toe member, andby oneor more steady pins 13 (Figs. 5 and 11) carried by the toe member 1 and entering-openings in the foot member 1, as shown in Fig. 5, or the reverse.
The main web the form has thereinrecesses for the reception of springs 9 which bear against the base of the slot 4 and serve to project the toe member 1 so as to cause the foot portion of the form to adapt itself to stocking feet of different lengths. Removal of the toe member 1 from the foot portion 1 of the form may be prevented by means of a transverse screwor pin 10 adapted to a slot 10 formed in the web 8 ofthe toe member, as shown forinstance by dotted lines in 8 of the toe member 1 of Fig. 4, or the toe member 1 may, if desired, be held in different positions of forward adjustment by adapting the pin 10 to either of a series of notches 10 in the slot 10, as shown in Fig. 5, the foot portion 1 of the form being slotted vertically, as shown in Figs. 5 and 10, to permit movement of the pin 10 sufiicient to carry the same into and out of said notches 1,0".
The extensible front member 2 of the leg portion of the form may also be locked in different positions of adjustment by means similar to those employed for locking the toe member 1, or other means forthus locking the extensible toe and leg members in their different positions of adjustment may be adopted without departing from the essential features of my invention.
I am aware that in the patent of R. N. Chandler No. 81,981, dated September 8, 1868, there is shown a stocking drying form having leg and foot portions adjustable as to width, and a longitudinally adjustable toe member, but in said patented device the parts were so constructed and combined that the widening of the leg could not be effected without a corresponding widening of the foot, and there was a break in the straight line longitudinal continuity of the upper and lower edges of the foot in all positions of the toe member, whereas my stocking drying form is free from both of these objections.
I claim 1. The combination of the foot portion of a stocking drying form, with an extensible toe member slidably mounted in respect to said foot portion and adjustable in the axial line thereof, said toe member having its top and bottom edges in line with the corresponding edges of the foot portion in the different positions of adjustment of said toe member, and means acting on the toe member to effect its movement on the foot-portion.
2. 3. The combination of the foot-portion of a stocking drying form, an extensible toe-' .member slidably mounted in respect to the foot-portion and having a projecting wing formed with a mortise therein, the foot member being provided with a slot and a projecting tenon for entering the mortise in the wing, and means normally active on the toe-member and tending to effect a sliding of it in respect to the foot-portion.
4. The combination of the foot portionof a stocking drying form with an extensible toe member slidably mounted in respect to said foot portion, said-toe member having top and bottom Wings and the foot portion of the form having top and bottom slots for the reception of said wings, and means normally active onthe toe-member to resist an inherent compressing action thereon of hosiery stretched thereover.
5. The combination of the foot portion of a stocking drying form with an extensible toe member slidably mounted in respect to said foot portion, said toe member having top and bottom wings and the foot portion of the form having top and bottom slots for the reception of said wings, and said slots having forwardly projecting central tenons therein and the wings of the toe member having central mortises for the reception of said tenons.

7. The combination of the foot portion of a stocking drying form with an extensible toe member slidably mounted in respect to said foot portion, elastic means tending to project said toe member, and means for restricting such projection.
8. The combination of the foot portion of a stocking drying form with an extensible toe member slidably mounted in respect to the foot portion, elastic means for projecting said toe member, and means for locking said extensible toe member in difierent' positions of adjustment in respect to the foot portion of the form.

12. A hosiery drying form including a foot-portion and an extensible toe-portion adjustably mounted in respect to the footportion, and elastic means associated with but independent of said portions and acting thereon to efi'ect a movement of one portion in relation to the other tending to project said toe-member.
