Description

A. W. P. CRAIVIER.
TOBACCO P IPE CLEANER. APPLICATION FILED JULY 17, 1915.
a Patent-ed Dec. 19m.
i ANTHON W. PUTMAN CRAIVIER, 0F WESTFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
TOBACCO-PIPE CLEANER.
tobacco pipes, same have come to myattention, inadequate for properly doing the work, principally because of the liability, due to their shape, of under-cutting the incrustation in the pipe and consequently breaking, cutting, or otherwise damaging the bowl thereof.
The object of my invention is the pro vision of a tobacco pipe cleaner so constructed that the sides of the cutter head are substantially parallel, in order to make the cut, in cleaning the bowl of the pipe, in alinement with the aXis of the bowl, thus obviating the liability of under-cutting the incrustation and consequently injuring the pipe bowl.
I am also aware that heretofore various devices have been adopted for packing the tobacco in the bowl ofa pipe. For example, a disk with a handle attached thereto has been employed for this purpose. In the use of such an instrument, however, there is a tendency, not easily avoided, to pack the tobacco so tightly that the pipe will not draw. In designing my improved pipe cleaner, I have therefore so constructed the handle thereof that it may be employed for packing the tobacco into the pipe bowl around the edges of the bowl so as to prevent the tobacco becoming too tightly packed more particularly. described, with the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a pipe cleaner showing the same applied to a tobacco pipe which is illustrated in perspective. 'Fig. 2 is a section through a tobacco Specification of Letters Patent.

pipe showing the pipe cleaner in an end edge elevation to illustrate the manner in which ghe tobacco may be packed in the bowl. Fig.
proved on line 4-, 4, Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing, my improved pipe cleaner preferably comprises a cutter head 10,
is sharpened from both surfaces,
substantially parallel sides 12 and 13, the
as clearlyindicated in the drawing, extending a material distance into the parallel sides. .Extending from the cut- 17, both of which are of materially larger diameter than the width of the handle. I The hereinbefore described pipe cleaner is preferably stamped u from sheet metal and, as is indicated in ig. l, the cutter head 0 may be inserted in the bowl 18 of the pipe 19 and the instrument turned in one or both directions, to remove the cake or lining of carbon which accumulates in a pipe, the substantially parallel side of the cutter head being of the same or nearly the same width as the diameter of the making it impossible to under-cut the layer of carbon, therebyobviating the possibility of cutting, cracking, or otherwise injuring the pipe.
By reference to that either end of the handle may be employed to pack the. tobacco, indicated at 20, 'in the bowl of the pipe from the edges thereof in such a manner that the tobacco at the center of the bowl is not packed as tightly as that adjacent the walls thereof, so that all the tobacco in the bowl will not be so tightly packed as to prevent the pipe from drawing properly.
I claim as my invention- As a new article of manufacture, a tobacco pipe'cleaner comprising a flat cutter head having a round end and parallel noncutting sides, a shank extending therefrom, and a cross piece associated with said shank andbeingappreciably longer thanthe width of head so as to serve as a grip in the use of the article. 7
Signed by me this 8th day of July, 1915.
