CLASP-BRAKE BEAM.
Specicaton of Letterslatent.
Patented Dec. 5, iwf@ Clasp-Brake Beams, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, suchA as will enable .others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of'one end of my improved brake beam designed especially for clasp brakes. Fig. 2 is a front elevational view. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on lineB-S of Fig. 1. Fig. l is a sectional view online 4-4 of Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a plan view of another form of my invention. Fig. 6I is a front elevational view of the structure Shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 7
is a vertical sectional view on line 7-7 of Fig; 5. Fig. -8 is a plan view of another v modified form of my invention. Fig. 9 is a sectional view on line,9-9 of Fig: 8.'
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in brake beams designed especially for clasp brakes in that the beam the center of the beam so used in connection with ordinary brakeV is provided with a strut or post near each end for the attachment of the brake applying devices. lft is obvious, however, that a single .strut or post could be employed at that it could be mechanism.
The object of my present invention is to utilize a commercially rolled flange formas the principal beamA member. This may be an I beam, channel, or other structural or 'pressed shapes. rllhe ends of this member are provided with reinforcements in the formf of pressed, ca'st, or forged pieces riveted or. otherwise secured to the main beam member, andv providing trunnions or mounts for the brake heads. The posts or ostruts are secured to these reinforcements and consequently when power is applied to the brake heads vthrough these posts or struts, it will betransmitted through these or independent struts or posts reinforcements augmented by the strength of the main beam member.-
lln the drawings l indicates the main beam member, here shown as an lt beam, having its ends slightly compressed' but these ends may be straight if desired. v
In Figs. l .to 3, 2 indicates pressed metal reinforcing members whose shank extensions are riveted to the web of the beam l and whose outer ends are formed so that when the parts are assembled a trunnion 3 is provided, thereby constitlitinga mount for the brake head, and an extension 4 is likewise formed which may be threaded toreceive a nut whereby the brake head isheld in place. When these pressed metal parts are assembled on the beam they Vmay be machine finished. 6 are pressed metal 'plates riveted together and to the Shanks of the reinforcing members 2. rfhese plates are riveted at their outer ends to provide means for the attachment of the brake applying devices.
fn Figs. 5 to 1,77, lf have shown the reinforcing members as being integral with the trunnion 7, and in this form a single casting or forging may be used instead of separated pressed plates shown in Figs. l to 3.
lln Fig. 8, l have shown reinforcing mem-k bers as being cast integral with the ratchet trunnion 8 designed especially for an` adjustable brake head. 'lln this form the strut or post is in the form of a casting 9 having a vertically disposed opening.
lf claim:
l.- ln a brake beam the combination of a main beam member, reinforcing elements arranged on each end thereof and carrying mounts for the brake heads, and separate connected to said reinforcingelements. p
2. lln a brake beam the combination -of a commercially rolled flange member, reinforcing elements arranged ,on each side thereof at the ends of the beam, said reinforcing elements providing mounts for the brake heads, and struts or posts connected. to said reinforcing elements.
3. -lln a brake beam the combination of a main nnember 'and end ymembers divided to receive yseid main member and reinforcing signature in the presence of two Witnesses, the same at the ends of the beam', said end l this seventh day of July, 1916.
members providing mounts for the brake heads, and struts or posts connected to the CHARLES HAINES WILLIAMS' 5 inner ends of said divided reinforcing mem- Witnesses:
bers. E. T. WALKER,
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my M. F. HUNTooN.
