Description

C. C. MILLER.
HGURE TOY.
APPLICATION mm MAY 51 m5.
L 19 Patented Dec. 5,1916.
an O2 11 '01 WMmuoogm CALVIN C. MILLER, OF SUMMITHILL. PENNSYLVANIA.
FIGURE TOY.
To all whom it may concern Be itknown that 1, CALVIN C. MILLER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Summithill, in the county of Carbon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F igure Toys, of which the following is a speci fication.
My invention relates to toys, and more particularly to that class of toys known as figure toys. f
The primary object of my invention is to provide a toy of the class above described which will be simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, strong and durable, and one which will be amusing in operation.
Another object of my invention is to provide a toy of the class above described preferably including a pair of objects represent-- ing pugilists, and having operating means associated therewith for moving the figures to simulate boxing.
A further object of my invention is to provide operating means associated with the figures and connected to one of them, connecting means between the figures being provided for causing the simultaneous movement of said figures.
A still further object of my invention is to provide preferably a pair of figures adapted for slmultaneous actuation, having hinged arms and means connected with said arms for causing the same to swing when the figures move.
'With the above and other objects in view my invention resides preferably in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth in the specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure .1 isa side elevation of my im-- proved toy, the base thereof being in longitudinal section to show the interior arrangement. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of my invention, the base thereof being shown in longitudinal section.
Similar reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the various views of the drawings.
Referring more particuia-rly to the drawings in which the preferred embodiment of my invention. is illustrated, I provide a base 1 having a top wall 2, end walls and side walls 4:,tl1e bottom thereof preferably being open. y

ignated 5 and (i. The object represented by the numeral 5 is supported on legs 7 and 8 which legs are provided with connecting means 9 and 10, respectively, for securement of the object to the top 2 of the base 1. The object 5 includes a body portion 11 which is hinged at 12 between the supporting legs 7 and 8. The object 6 is similar in construction to the object 5 and is supported on legs 13 and 14 and includes a body portion 15 which is hinged at 16 between and upon the legs 13 and 14:. The legs are secured as at 17 and 1.8, respectively, to the top 2 of the base 1. The objects 5 and 6 are connected for simultaneous movement, the body portions 11 and 15 being associated for simultaneous operation by a connecting rod 19.
Each of the body portions 11 and 15 f the objects and 6 is provided with hinged arms 20, 21, 22, and 23, respectively. The arms are adapted for alternate swinging movement through a vertical plane on pivots 2-1 and 25, respectively. The arms are adapted to alternately swing when'the body portions 11 and are moved upon the pivots 12 and 16. in order to accomplish this I have provided connecting elements 26 and 26 which extend between the arms 20 and 22 and the legs 7 and 13, respectively. The arms 21 and 23 are connected in a like man ner to the legs 8 and 14, respectively, and it will be seen that when the bodies 11 and 15 are oscillated on their pivots 12 and 16, the arms will be caused to swing on their pivots 24 and 25 by virtue of their connection with a stationary point.
In order to cause the figures to oscillate, I have provided a prime mover which may be,
as shown, of the spring type including a coil spring element 27 mounted upon adrum 28, which drum. is connected at one of its ends to a large gear 29, the drum being mounted for rotation. on a shaft 30. Winding means is provided for the spring which comprises a handle 31 which extends exteriorly of the base 1. The large gear 29 is actuatable by the spring 27 when the latter is wound, said gear meshing with a pinion 32 mounted upon a transverse shaft 33 whereby to impart movement to a second gear 34. carried by said shaft 33. The r 3 i meshes with a pinion 35 mounted upon a crank shaft 36, said crank shaft having a crank portion 37 to which is connected it drivii'. .od 38 which extends from id crank '5"? to one of the figures, namely 5, and
supporting said transverse shafts and the shaft 30.
Frmn the-above description. taken in con nection with the accompanying drawings it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention may be readily gathered. It will be noted that when motion is imparted to the driving rod 38 from the crank 37 that the object 5 representing a boxer will be caused to oscillate which will in turn, o ing to the connecting rod 19, cause the body 15 to oscillate. The arms 20, 21, 22, and 23 will be, by virtue of their connecting rods 26 and 26, caused to swing in a vertical plane representing in a very effective manner the actions of pugilists. Particular stressis laid upon the connecting rod 19 since this provides means whereby the figures will be caused to be relatively moved thus assisting in attaining the object desired. It is to be understood that the connecting elements 2-6 and 26. may be 01": resilient material such as a coil spring or rubber band and I therefore do not desire to be limited to the solid connecting elcmeans for connecting the figures, and arms construction. it desired that it be understood that I may make such changes in the details thereof thatldo not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thusdesdribcd my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A. toy oftheclas's: described, including a base and a pluralityi-oi objects thereon representing human figures, an operating means in said base connected with one of said i :jures, arms on said figures movable by operation 01'' the figures, and a connecting rod interposed between said figures, as and for the purpose forth.
2. A tov of the class described, including a. base and a plurality of objects thereon representing human figures, an operating means in, the base, connecting means between said operating means and one of said figures,
on said figures adapted for movement upon movement of the figures.
3. A toy 30-5 the class described, including a base, an operating means in said base, a plurality of figures on. said base including pivoted body portions, connectin means between said figures, arms on said gure's having permanent connection with a stationary obj ect whereby movement of the figures will cause swinging of the arms.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence oi? two witnesses.
