APPARATUS FOR TIGHTENING AND FASTENING BANDS AROUND CASES AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent Patented Dec. 5, 1916.
Application filed February 21, 1916. Serial in. 79,714.
19 have invented a certain 'new and useful Improved Apparatus for Tightening and Fastening Bands Around Cases and the like,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boxes or cases protected by external hoop iron or like bands. Each band when being applied requlres its ends-drawn toward each other to be riveted together. Such bands have been strained or the two ends drawn together and then united or secured in a variety of ways. Objections existed to some of the.
appliances hitherto used as they were heavy v and cumbrous, were comparatively slow in operation, and an apparatus was not quickly transferable to the next band to be tightened. In addition to the foregoing complete control was not easily retained of the operating parts while the two band ends were bein drawn together or tightened and a so punc ing apparatus used for forming a hole through each band end could not always be conveniently controlled while the punch was being forced through the ends of the bands to receive a rivet.
The object of this invention is to provide apparatus whereby the two ends of a band are drawn'together with ease and despatch and then with equal facility locked together by riveting. Not only are the parts light The control of the apparatus while the tightening screw is bein' actuated is also efiected by a control han le. Another con trol handle effects the same purpose on a punching apparatus, the punch of which is retained in its holder in such a manner that it turns with the holder and not independently of the same. The features of novelty are pointed out in the appendedclanns.
Referring to the drawlngs whichv form a part of this specification, Figure 1 1s a perspective view of a straining, punchlng and but they are also strong, special provision riveting apparatus complete and in pos 1t1on on a box. For convenience of illustration a far cam lever is down and its band end free. A punch block is in place and one of the meeting ends of the bands 1s overlapping the other and ready to be punched. Fig. 2 is a side view of a slide block having an extension thereon and a control handle. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing a toothed sleeve around the plain part of a tightening screw. Fig. 4. is a part 'sectional view of a punch holder and locking screw. Fig. 5 is a view of the punch block showing a rivet being inserted in a band. Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view of a sliding block extension having a handle retaining bridge. Fig. 7 is a perspective view on a reduced scale of a removable handle for use with a sliding block having an extension as seen in Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a reduced sectional view of the base plate of a punch block having a handle retaining bridge, the handle seen in Fig. 7 being used with both the sliding block and the punch block when they are provided with bridges. This invention includes a base plate 2 at each end of which is riveted, bolted, or
otherwise secured a bearing 3. Inside the said bearings is situated a right and left handed tightening screw having aright hand thread 4 and a left hand thread 5. Between these two is a central plain part 6. On one end of the screw is secured a hand wheel 7 Around the central plain part 6 is a sleeve 8 locked to the said plain part by a locking pin 9. Protruding from the sleeve are teeth 10. Around the sleeve is a split yoke having a right leg 11 and a left leg 12. Between the two legs is a. pivot pin 13 upon which is pivoted a pawl 14. The upper end of the split yoke is provided with a divided socket pin 15 upon which drops a removable socket handle 16.
In combination with the foregoing are slide blocks 17 on each side of which is a guide lip 18. Through each slide block is a threaded hole passing one of the tightening screw threads. Protruding from one of the blocks is an extension 19 to which is attached the lower end of an upraised control handle 20. Outstanding from each block is a foot 21 and above it outstands a cam pin 22 upon which turns a cam 23 operated by a cam lever 24.
The above apparatus is used for draw ng the two band ends together. For riveting having a base plate 25. Through this is a punch hole to pass the punchings made by the punch. Formed in the surface of the base plate are two hollows 26 between which is an elevated ridge 27. Through the said base plate pass rivets or other attachments to secure the inner end of the upraised punch block holding handle 28. Above the punch block stands a head 29 beneath which is a gullet or mouth to pass the bands to be punched and riveted. Through the said head is a vertical threaded hole.
Into the threaded hole before referred to is placed the screw threaded portion 30 of an upraised pun-ch holding handle 31. Within the threaded portion of this handle is a hole to accommodate the upper end of a punch. Through the wall of the inner end of the said handle is a threaded hole to accommodate a locking screw 32.
In the hole in the threaded portion of the punch holding handle before referred to is situated a socket pin 35 in which is a looking screw hole 36. The punch has a punch portion 33 and a collar 34.
Instead of a control handle being secured to the extension 19 of one of the sliding blocks 17 the said extension may be provided with an upraised handle retaining bridge 37 forming a socket indicated at 38. Instead, also, of a punch block holding handle being secured to the base plate 25 the said plate may be provided with an upraised handle retaining bridge 39 forming a socket indicated at 40. When the bridges 37 and 39 are-provided a single removable control handle 41 is employed having a foot 42. As the sliding and punch block are not in use simultaneously it is obvious that the foot 42 may be inserted in the socket of the element belng operated to steady it.
This invention is operated as follows The base plate 2 is placed upon the top of the box and by the hand wheel 7 the slide blocks 17 are moved to their outward extremities. The cam levers 24 are then lowered and the band ends 43 and 44 respectively are placed between a cam and a. foot 21. The cam levers 24 are then elevated and the band ends thereby locked to the slide blocks. The removable socket handle 16 is then placed over the divided socket pin 15 and the ratchet pawl 14 moved backward and forward thereby drawing the two slide blocks together. The band ends are thereby also drawn together until they overlap each other. The apparatus is steadied by the handle 20. When sufficiently tight the base plate 25 is passed underneath the two ends and the punch holding handle 28 rotated. A hole is 7 thereby formed through the two meeting ends 43 and 44. The punch block is steadied by the handle 28. When the hole is punched the punch base is moved sidewardly until the elevated ridge 27 is situated directly beneath the punch holes. A bifurcated rivet, legs downwardly, is then driven through the hole in the two band ends and the legs as they press against the ridge 27 are separated one from the other and the said ends turn back upon the inside of the inside band. The band ends are thereby locked together. A second hole 18 then punched and another rivet inserted.
The cam levers are then depressed releasing,
the band ends and by the hand wheel 7 the slide blocks are moved from each other in order that the ends of a fresh band may be treated as before described.
