To all ii/1.0m it may concern Be it known that I, OTTO J. .AUMULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and i'lseful ln'iprovements in Bottle-Indicators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention is directed to improvements in indicators for bottles, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character adapted to indicate the fact that the bottle has been refilled with liquid other than the liquid originally contained therein.

It frequently occurs that bottles contain ing a liquid of standard quality are surreptitiously and fraudulently refilled with an inferior grade, and it is to prevent such practice that the present invention has been perfected.

With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which 1- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View through a bottle, showing the same equipped with the device. Referring to the drawing 1 indicates a conventional form of bottle, and in the neck 2 of which is mounted a sleeve 3, said sleeve being held in the neck by the band l. The band -11 is of the expansion type and is adapted to engage in the annular grooves 5 and 6 of the neck and sleeve, respectively, thereby interlocking the sleeve and neck.

The indicator comprises a hollow cylinder 7, which may be formed from any suitable material and has its upper end provided with a plug 8 which is swiveled therein, said plug being provided with a stem 9 adapted to be fused in the bearing 10 formed in the sleeve 3, whereby the cylinder is swung to a vertical position in the bottle, and centrally thereof. The lower end of the cylinder may engage the bottom of the bottle, or it may be spaced therefrom as desired.

The cylinder 7 is provided with a spiral 7 the upper wall thereof being unobstructed or plain, while the lower edge thereof is provided with a series of teeth 11, the purpose of which will appear later. a

A float 12 is provided, and may be formed of any suitable material and in any suitable manner to suit the fancy of the manufac turer, said float being provided with a central opening 13 for slidably engaging the cylinder 7 Projecting into the opening 13 is a pin 14-, which is adapted to slidably engage'the upper wall of the slot 7 as the float moves downwardly on the cylinder, but when the bottle is tilted to pour the contents therefrom, it engage betv en a pair of the teeth 11', thus preventing movement of the float longitudinally of the cylinder. Thus it will be seen that when the bottle is tilted that move ment of the float in a direction toward the neck of the bottle is prevented by the pin 14, which engaged the teeth 11, but as soon as the bottle is returned to its normal or vertical position the float may move downwardly owing to the fact that the lower wall of the slot is plain and unobstructed. The float will continue to move downwardly until it reaches the surface of the liquid. Now should a person refill the bottle, it is obvious that the float will be submerged, thus indieating to the purchaser that the original contents of the bottle have been removed.

It will be of course understood that as the liquid is removed from the bottle in any quantities that the float will follow the liquid level until the bottom of the bottle is reached. In cases where the cylinder 7 has its lower end spaced from the bottom of the bottle it is obvious that the float will disengage the cylinder when all of the contents are removed from the bottle, and should the bottle be refilled the float will of course rise to the top of the liquid, and will indicate the fact that the bottle has been refilled, since the float is disengaged from the spiral.

The bore of the sleeve 3 is tortuous, whereby a wire or pin cannot be inserted therein so as to actuate the float 12. It will be further noted that the cylinder 7 has its upper end swivelly connected to the sleeve 3.
