To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR 'F. CARLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edmonton, in the Province of Alberta, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable" others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in foldingumbrellas, and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character in which the ribs will be formed in sections and adapted to be folded against the umbrella stem when the device is not in use.
Another object of this invention is to pro vide a device of this, character in which the stem will be formed of telescoping sections with means slidably mounted upon one of said sections to support the ribs and the sectional stretchers, whereby upon sliding movement of said slidable means in the proper direction, the ribs and stretchers will be caused to move to folded position against the umbrella stem. A further object is to generally improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character and provide a device which may be readily folded in compact form and which will be of such con struction that the ribs and stretchers will automatically move to normal position upon outward movement of one of the slidable members un'dem influence of a spring engaged with the latter.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features ofconstruction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a completeunderstanding of my invention, reference is to be had 'tothe following description and accompanying drawings, in which V Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my complete device in open position, parts of the device being shown in section, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the complete device, partly folded, Fig. 3 is an elevational View of the complete device in folded form, Fig. 4 is adetail view of the outer end of the slidable sleeve, Fig. 5 is an. end elevation of the same, looking at the outer end thereof, and Fig. 6 is an end elevation of the rib carrying ring.
Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the handle, in the socket 2 of which is engaged the inner end of the inner stem section 3, over which is slidably or telescopically engaged the outer stem sec tion 4, the outer extremity of which is closed to form the umbrella tip 5, as will be readily understood by referring to the drawings.
The inner end of the inner stem section 3 is retained in-position in the socket 2 and prevented from turning by means of the pivoted spring actuated pawl 6 which is pivoted intermediate its ends to the ear 7 formed on the handle 1 and which engages with the notch 10 in the stemsection 3.
The outer collar and slidable section 4 of the stem is locked in its innermost position upon the inner section-'3 of the stem, by means of a spring actuated pawl 11, similar to the pawl (S, and pivoted upon an car 12 carried by the outer stem section 4, adjacent the inner end thereof. The pawlll is normally engaged through an opening provided therefor in the-outerstem section 4 and in the notch 15 formed in the stem section 3, adjacent the inner end thereof. The outer stem section 4 is locked in its outermost position by engagement of the end of said pawl 11 in the notch 16 provided in the inner stem section 3, adjacent the outer end thereof. Rigidly mounted upon-the outer stem section 4, is a sleeve 17, the inner end 18 of which is reduced in diameter and has an outwardly directedannular stop flange 19 at its rear or inner extremity, while outwardly and radially directed perforated cars 20 are formed atthe outer extremity of said sleeve 17 to pivo-tally support the inner stretcher sections 21, to the free ends of which the outer stretcher sections 22 arepivoted. The outer or free ends of the outer stretcher sections 22 are pivoted to the outer rib sections 23, spaced distances from the inner ends of said outer rib sections 23. The outer rib sections 23 are pivotally' connected to the outer ends of the inner rib sections 24 and the outer stretchersections'22 are connected with the inner rib sections 24 by the short connecting rods 25 having their opposite ends pivotally connected to said outer stretcher sections 22 and said inner rib sections 24, adjacent the outerends thereof.
The inner stretcher sections 21 are pivotally connected to the inner rib sections 2% by the long connecting rods 26 which have their opposite ends pivotally connected to the inner stretcher sections 21 adjacent the outer ends thereof and to the inner rib sections at slightly inwardly of the longitudinal center thereof. It will therefore be seen that these sectional stretchers and ribs are properly connected to brace the same and allow the sections to fold against one another or be forced outwardly to form a rigid support for the umbrella covering 27.
The inner ends of the inner rib sections 2e are pivoted to the radially directed and perforated ears 28 formed on the ring 29 which is mounted upon the outer ends of the rods 30 which encircle the sleeve 17 and pass between the ears 20, said rods 30 being connected at their inner ends by the ring 31. The ring 29 is resiliently retained in its outermost position and in engagement with. the flange 32 formed on the outer stem section 4 at the inner, end of the tip 5, by means of the helical spring 33 which has one end bearing against the inwardly directed flange 3e formed on the collar 29, while the opposite end of said spring bears against the inner end 35 of the main or large portion of the sleeve 17, it being understood that said spring 33 is partially inclosed by the sleeve 17 when said spring is expanded to retain the collar 29 in its outermost position. Practically all of the spring 33 isinclosed by the sleeve 17 when the rods 30 are drawn inwardly to bring ring 29 to its innermost position against the outer end of said sleeve 17 and to force the sectional stretchers and ribs to fold against one another. The rods 30 may be readily drawn inwardly by grasping the ring 31 and drawing the same toward the handle 1 while holding the same stationary, the free or working end of the spring actuated pawl 36, pivoted upon the ring 31, catching automatically behind the inner end 35 of the large or main portion of the sleeve 17 as said pawl is drawn past said end 35. It will be evident that the pawl 36 will lock the rods 30 in their innermost position with the sectional stretchers and ribs in their folded position, with the free ends of the outer rib sections 23 engaged against the outer face of the stop flange 19. It will also be evident that the spring 33 will be compressed when the parts are in their folded positions as just described, and upon the application of pressure to the free end of the pawl 36, the working end of said pawl will be swung to inoperative position, thereby allowing action of the spring 33 to force the rods 30, ring 29 and sectional stretchers and ribs to their outermost position, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
It will 7 also be evident that upon disengagement of the working end of the pawl 11, from the notch 15, the outer stem section 4 may be moved to its outermost position to allow the pawl 11 to engage in the recess 16 and thereby lock said stem section 4 in its outermost position.
WV hen desired, the outer stem section at of the stem may be entirely removed from the inner stem section 3 and the pawl 6 may be operated to allow the inner stem section 3 to be removed from the socket 2 of the handle 1. It will also be clearly seen that owing to the extremely simple construction and operation of the various parts of this device, and the manner in which said parts are connected with one another, any of said parts may be readily replaced at small cost should they become worn or broken, thereby making it unnecessary to replace the complete device.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A device of the character described comprising a stem, a sleeve mounted upon said stem and having a reduced portion, stretchers, supporting members projecting from said sleeve, rods arranged around said sleeve and connected at their opposite ends by rings, ribs projecting from one of said rings, said stretchers being connected with said ribs, and a spring mounted in said sleeve and engaged with one of said rings to resiliently retain, the stretchers and ribs in their outermost position.
2. A device of the class described comprising a stem, a sleeve mounted upon said stem and having an enlarged portion, a ring slidably mounted upon said stem outwardly of said sleeve, a ring slidably mounted upon said sleeve, rods connecting said rings, a spring actuated pawl carried by the second mentioned ring for engagement with the inner end of the enlarged portion of said sleeve to retain said rods and rings in their innermost positions, stretchers, a third ring rigid with said sleeve, ears projecting radially from the third mentioned ring; said stretchers being pivoted to said ears, ribs pivoted to the ring slidably mounted upon the stem, said ribs and stretchers being pivotally connected and adapted to fold against one another when said first and second mentioned rings and rods are in their innermost position, and a spring for forcing said rods and rings outwardly to retain said stretchers and ribs in their extended positions.
3. A device of the class described comprising the combination with an inner stem section, a handle removably engaged upon said inner stem section, an outer stem section telescopically connected with the inner stem section, a sleeve rigidly mounted upon said outer stemsection, connected ribs and stretchers, supporting means carried by said outer stem section and sleeve to support said connected stretchers and ribs, and a pawl for locking the outer stem section against movement upon the inner stem sections.

A device of the class described comprising a stem, a sleeve and ring rigidly mounted upon said stem, inner stretcher sections mounted upon said sleeve and ring, outer stretcher sections pivoted to said inner stretcher sections, a ring slidably mounted upon said stem, inner rib sections mounted upon the last mentioned ring, outer rib sections pivotally connected to said inner rib sections, said outer stretcher sections being pivotally connected to the outer rib sections, said inner and outer rib sections and inner and outer stretcher sections being adapted to be folded against said stem, and a spring for resiliently retaining said stem and stretcher sections in extended position.
5. A device of the class described comprising a stem, a ring slidably mounted upon said stem, inner rib sections pivotally connected to said ring, outer rib sections pivotally connected to theinner rib sections, a sleeve rigidly mounted upon said stem, inner stretcher sections pivotally connected to said sleeve, outer stretcher sections pivotally connected to said inner stretcher sections, said outer stretcher sections being pivotally connected to said outer rib sections, means for locking the ring in its innermost position to retain the rib sections and stretcher sections in folded position against said stem, and a spring within the sleeve and bearing against the ring to force the latter outwardly when it is released.

A device of the class described comprising a stem, a supporting member slidably mounted upon said stem, inner rib sections carried by said slidable member, outer rib sections connected with said inner rib sections, a second supporting member carried by said stem, inner stretcher sections carried by said second supporting member, outer stretcher sections connected with said inner stretcher sections and with the outer rib sections, said rib and stretcher sections being adapted to be folded against the stem, and connections between said stretcher sections and the inner rib sections.
