Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov.. 2d, i916@ Application filed 'May 13, 1916. Serial No. 97,430.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it lrnown that we, ALBERT N. BIERLY and ELLIS BIERLY, citizens of the United States, residing at Central City, Boggs township, Center county, Pennsylvania, have invented aI new and useful Message- Hoop, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in devices for delivering messages to traveling trains, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the message or other article may be conveniently and effectively clamped to the device.
The invention consists in the details'of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved device for delivering messages to traveling trains whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
ln order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a device for holding messages constructed in accordance with our invention; and Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the device as herein disclosed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, l denotes a rod formed preferably of wood and which has one end portion bent or returned to aord al loop 9 and secured to the free end of the outer portion of the rod l affording the loop 9 is a clip 3 subst-antially U-shaped in form and which straddles the rod l and has its extremities secured to the adjacent portion of the loo-p 9 through the medium of the rivets 5 or the like.
Disposed through the rod l and the clip 3 is the rivet or pin 7 which holds said clip 3 against movement longitudinally of the rod l and which also aifords a pivot for the rocking clamp 2, said pivotal connection being substantially midway of the clamp, and the intermediate portion of said clamp Q is cut away, as at 8, through which extends the clip 3, said opening being of such dimensions as to permit the requisite rocking movement being imparted to the clamp Q. The portion of the clamp 2 within the loop 9 coacts with the rod l to clamp a message or the like to the device, and said inner end portion of the clamp 2 is constantly urged toward said rod l through the medium of lthe flat spring fi secured, as at 6, to the opposite end portion of the clamp 2 and bearing against the rod l at a point without the loop.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a device for holding messages constructed in accordance with our invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facilitv with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of some change andmodification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
We claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising an elongated rod having one end portion returned to afford a loop, a clip secured to the end of said return portion and straddling the rod, a member disposed through the clip and the rod for holding said clip against movement longitudinally of the rod, and a clamping member coacting with the portion of the rod comprised in the loop, said member for holding the clip against movement serving as a pivotal mounting for the clamp.
2. A device of the character described comprising an elongated rod having one end portion returned to afford a loop, a clip secured to the end oi said return portion and straddling the rod, a member disposed through the Clip and the rod for holding said clip against movement longitudinally of the rod, and a clamping member ooaoting with the portion of the rod comprised in the loop, said member for holding the clip ALBERT N. BIERLY. ELLIS BIERLY.
