It is a common fault with this class of instrumentalities that the movable jaw develops a tendency to lift the -work with reference to the-fixed jaw when the holding pressure vis applied to the work or ob]e ct clamped Abetween them. Said downward thrust upon the movable jaw holds it firmly to its seat in counteraction of any lifting tendency which may be imposed upon it by the work when it is clamped between the jaws, as is invariably the case in any construction of the kind where the movable jaw is directly engaged by the screw, as hitherto employed. `\Vith the improved construction the movable jaw is always kept firmly seated upon the base, with its working surface held squarely therewith and parallel with the fixed jaw, insuring accurate placing of the work and reliability of action under all conditions. It will be obvious that a converse arrangement of the engaging pin and slot of the movable jaw and nut block would be perfectly feasible and equally as well adapted to insure the result contemplated, that is, having the pin 3l fixed in the nut block and engaging inclined slots 32 in the jaw, as shown in the modification in Fig. 6. The operating screw in the present instance, as is usual with planer chucks or vises, is provided with an angular head 33 adapted for the reception of a wrench for turning the screw.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In vise mechanism the combination of a frame, a screw journaled in the frame, a movable jaw slidable in the direction of the axis ofthe screw, a nut carried upon the screw, and engaging means for connecting kthe nut with the movable jaw having' the force transmitting abutment oblique to the line of the screw thrust in the direction to force the jaw to its seat by the act of forcing it against the work.
