Specification of Letters Patent.

' Application filed October 28, 1914:. Serial No. 869,027.
b all whom t may concern Be it known that l, EDWARD C. BARTLETT,
in -vises or chucks and analogoustools which comprise the cooperation of a pair of clamping jaws movable relative to. each other by lmeans of actuating mechanism `such as a screw. It is a common fault with this class of instrumentalities that the movable jaw develops a tendency to lift the -work with reference to the-fixed jaw when the holding pressure vis applied to the work or ob]e ct clamped Abetween them. For instance, in
the case of a chuck employed for holding work which is being finished in a shaper or planer, it is only with the greatest care and v difficulty that the work can be kept aceurately seated between the jaws after the pressure is applied to it, as the tendency of such pressure is to lift the work and the movable jaw up from the plane of the fixed .shall insure the positive bedding of the.
part of this specification,
jaw, that is, the work tends to springl out from between the chuck jaws, instead of bedding itself in its seat, which interferes materially with the production of exact or accurate surfacing of the work. My improvement contemplates a construction which work in its seat, .and obviate all tendency of the movable jaw to lift it therefrom.
l 1n the accompanying drawings forming a Figure 1 is a side elevation ofmy improved vise, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, viewed from above. Fig. 3 is a` central longitudinal section through Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a transverse section through Figs. 3 and 4 on the line 4, Il, thereof. Fig. 5 is anend elevation. Fig. 6 shows a modification of the jaw camming device.
Referring to the drawings'my improved vise is shownto embodythe usual'base plate 10, adapted when used as planer chuck to be bolted to the planer bed through the slotted flanges 11 at its ends, and provided with. the vertical jaw 9 projecting upwardly above the plane upper surface 12 of the base at the rear end thereof. Said base, in the usual form, or as here shown, has a recess Middlesex, in
My invention relates to an improvement' 13 on its lower side with vertical walls 14 and 15 respectively at its` front and rear ends, and these walls form the bearings or abutments forl supporting the operating screw 1G by which the movable jaw of the vise is actuated. In the present instance,-a
cap bearing 17 is let into the upper`surface' of the base at the front wall 14 andthe base and cap each respectively form a half .box for thev journal 18 of the screw, which is necessarily placed between thrust collars 19 and 20,' which are adapted to bear against the wall and the cap, and receive the endv thrust of the screw. The provision of theA half box 17 enables the screw to be placed in position from the front end of the base, after" which the box may be secured by the screws 21. The base is formed with a central longitudinal slot 22 extending for such portion of its length as maybe necessary for the range of the movable jaw, and in this slot is itted a sliding block or nut 23, projecting above the surface 12, and screw threaded to receive the screw 16, upon which it is adapt ed to travel by the normal rotation thereof. Said block is provided with lateral flanges 24 which bear upon the lower side of the top of the base at each side of the -slot 22. Un
the upper side of thisltop or surface 12, the f y movable jaw 25 is adapted to travel, and it is provided with longitudinal ribs 26 which fit corresponding, longitudinal grooves 27 in the base for holding it in place, and connin its movement to the line of the grooves.
its lower side which receives the nut-block 23, loosely tted therein, .that is, having ample clearance space around the block to permit motionof the jaw relative to 'the block in any direction. rll`he nut block is formed with a transverse slot 29 .extending through it, and having a plane of inclination from the horizontal or planeiof the screw, converging toward the screw at the front end thereof, that is, the inclination of the slot isl upward or away from the base in the direction of the fixed jaw, as shown in Fig. Through this slot is .passed a pin 30, or engaging element having its ends rigidly secured in the movable jaw, whereby presheV *I if movable jaw is formed with a'recess 28 on ico sure applied to the pin by the contact of the sides of the slot of the nut block therewith will operate to slide the movable block upon its guide ways on the base.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In vise mechanism the combination of a frame, a screw journaled in the frame, a movable jaw slidable in the direction of the axis ofthe screw, a nut carried upon the screw, and engaging means for connecting kthe nut with the movable jaw having' the force transmitting abutment oblique to the line of the screw thrust in the direction to force the jaw to its seat by the act of forcing it against the work.
2. In vise mechanism the combination of a. frame, carrying a fixed clamping jaw, a
power screw' journaledl in the frame, a movable jaw slidably seated and guided upon the work between the fixed and movable 3. In vise mechanism the combination of a frame, a fixed clamping liaw carried upon the frame,.a screw journaled in the fralne and adapted to thrust upon the fixed jaw, a movable nut block carried upon the screw, a movable clamping jaw guided upon the frame and slidably mounted with relation to the fixed jaw, and engaging means between the movable jaw and nut block comprising diagonal camming surfaces by which the pressure of the actuating screw upon the block is transmitted to the clamping jaw in a line diagonal to the movement of the jaw to actuate the movable jaw at right angles to the axis of the screw, and upon its seat in the act of clamping the work, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. vIn vise mechanism the combination of a frame having a fixed clamping jaw mounted thereon, a power screw journaled.
in the frame and adapted to thrust upon the fixed jaw, a nut block carried upon the screw` a movable clamping jaw guided upon the frame slidable in relation to the fixed jaw, and engaging means between the movable jaw and nut block comprising coacting surfaces oblique to the axial line of the screw in the direction to transmit the screw pressure on the movable jaw in part to force the jaw against its bearing on the frame and seat it thereon in the act of clamping the work` substantially as and for the purpose specified.
