Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, HENRY J. BECK and LAWRENCE M. RAKESTRAW, citizens of the.
United States, residing at Toledo, Lucas county, Ohio, have invented new and useful Multiple-F ace Finishers, of which the fol-V showing features of the clamping means or article locking device; Fig. 3 is a View of the opposite side of the machine from the showing in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an end view of the machine; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary side elevation of the machine on the opposite side from the showing .in Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is a view of the structure in Fig. 5, looking from the right toward said figure; Fig. 7 isa fragmentary view of the device of Fig. 6, additional structure being broken away; and Fig. 8 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line VIII-VIII, Fig. 7, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Mounted on the frame 1 are the bearing brackets 2, 3, (Fig. 4) carrying the shaft 4. This shaft 4 has on one end thereof the loose pulley 5 from which the driving belt may be shifted to the fast pulley 6 to drive the shaft 4. This shaft 4 intermediate the bearing brackets 2, 3, has the eccentric section 7 (Fig. 6) with which may engage the set screw 8 to lock the rotary carrier'or disk member 9 4to the shaft 4. The eccentricity of the opening lin the disk or carrier 9 is equal to the eccentricity of the shaft section l which are the adjustable seats 11 having the slots 12 with which screws 13 may en gage to lock the adjustable seat elements 11 in sliding position for movement toward and from the opposing seat 10 to lock, in this instance, a hexagonal article or spark plug bushing 14 in position therebetween. This locking is accomplished automatically. The seat element 11 has recess 15 therein engaged by the head 16 (Fig. 2) of the lever 17 which has the vspring 18 normally holding the element 11 away from the opposing seat 10 or in releasing position asto the article.
Mounted on the fulcrum 19 for the lever 17 is Vthe arm 20 between which arm 20 and i the end of the lever 17 away from its head 16 coacts the spring 21. Then this spring 21 is compressed, it is eHective to overcome the action of the spring 18 and rock the lever 17 so that its head -16 will force the element 11 to yieldably lock the article 14 between the faces-10, 11. To automatically accomplish this locking action, a cam 21 is provided for each of the arms 20. These cams 21', or eccentrics, are mounted on the pins 22 which carry arms 23, 24. Mounted on the extension 25 from the bearing 3 is the lcross arm 26 carrying pins 27, 28, which serve in the rotation of thecarrier 9 to automatically lock and release the articles 14 in the carrier 9.
Referring to'Fig. 3: As the arms 24 travel pastrthe pin 28, the pins 24 are locked toward the stops 28 to shift the cams 21 into position vto throw the arms 2O for locking the elements in the carrier during the downward travel of the carrier. As the articles approach the top of the carrier, from this carrier rotation, the pins 27 strike the arms 23 to move 4toward the opposite side of stops 28 to that engaged by the pins 24 and reverse the rocking of the cams 21 to release or unlock the articles disposed between the seats l0, 11.v Accordingly asthe articles are carried down one side, across the bottom and up the other side of the machine by the carrier, they are firmly locked in position. During this travel of the articles means are provided for acting upon the articles, in this instance to finish opposite faces of the polygons of the bushings. This action is simultaneous in dressing and inishing-the oppositefaces of each article as the articles pass between the wheels 29 mounted on the shafts 3() carried in the bearings 31 rockably mounted on the bracket studs 32. The intermediate brackets 33 (Fig. 4) carrying the screws 34 having the adjusting wheels 35, 36 thereon permit such gaging of the inward limit of movement for these wheels as well as the give therebetween in the resiliency of the springs 37 mounted on said screw shafts 34. These wheels 29 aredriven by the pulleys 38 at a y. high speed of rotation and in the direction which will force the articles against the lixed seat 10 as they rub the exposed faces of the articles for grinding, bufiing or polishing, as the surface of the wheels may be equipped to perform. The variation in the eccentricity of the rotary carrier and its shaft -mounting introduces the travel across 1 the face of these rotary members so that the as herein shown. .-The peripheral embodiv i ment is especially desirable. in connection with hexagonal elements or otherelements having lateral as well as terminal'faces te be finished, which finishing of the terminal faces might occur simultaneously with .the s.
finishing of the lateral faces.
In the instance of hexagonal articles, the travel, in one rotation of the carrier will simultaneously finish two opposing faces of the article. This leaves two other pairs of faces for finishing. In the machine of this disclosure, these additional faces may be finished automatically by the machine itself changing the position of the article to expose .successive pairs of the opposing faces in succeeding rotations of the carrier.
Adjacent the position of each'clamp orpair of holding seats, the carrier 9 has a pin 40 disposed to contact the arm 41 of the vertically disposed rock shaft 42 (Figs. 5,
7, 8) This shaft 42 is mounted in a bracket 43 adjustably positioned by the bolt 44 and y the arm 45 as to the eccentric 7 of the shaft 4. This arm 45 is loosely mountedy on the shaft section 7 and is held from rotation from the machine. This sleeve permits thel carrier to have the radial variatlons of po i (Flig.v 1) by the stem 46 upwardly extending to engage in the socket or sleeve- 47 remote sitions caused by the eccentric shaft .7 and still maintains the bracket 43 in de- /sir'ed vertical positionB The rock shaft 42 is normally held with its arm 41 in the direction of the projecting pins 40 by the torsion spring 48. When the pin 40 strikes the arm 41 and rocks the shaft 42 against the resistance of the torsion spring 48, it causes the shaft 42 to carry with it the arm 49 having the yielding face 50, say of rubber, to Contact the article 14 tates such article a suiiicient distance to expose another pair offaces outside the clamping device. Opposing the arm 49 is vthe plunger 51 actuated by the spring 52 to have its yielding face 50 grip the opposite side of the article 14 and assist the arm 49 in the rotation of the article. The nuts 53 permit .such adjustment of this plunger 51 as may be desired inpractice.
In the treating of six sided articles two shift-ings after `the initial placing completes the finishing of the three pairs of faces and the article thus dressed is ready for removal from the machine. This is automatically accomplished by the star wheel 54 mounted on the bracket 55 extending laterally of the U-bracket 43,. The 'pin 55 on the face of the carrier 9 is in such position that it will `rotate the star wheel 54 one arms distance in each rotation of the carrier 9. As the shifting occurs between the first and second and between the second and third rotations, two arms of the star wheel 54 are blank between the pins 56 carried by two of the arms of this starwheel. rlhese pins 56 are in position to act upon the arm 57 pivoted to the bracket 55 and lthereby pull such arm 57 towhich has been released and is still resting between the opposing seats 10, 11, and roward the axis of the-wheel 54 causingthe exible `member 58 connected to the piny 59 l on the shaft 60 to draw said pin 59 into the upright or full line position shown in Fig.;
