IMPROVEMENT IN BLACKlNG-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,554, dated October 31, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN VAN SANTVOORD, of Mount Vernon, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blacking-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved blacking-box with its cover in place on the box. Fig. 2 is avertical central section of the box, the cover being removed. Fig. 3 is a like section of the cover.

This invention relates to boxes for containing blacking such as is commonly used for polishing boots and shoes; and consists in providing such boxes with double edges, the inner edge forming the top of the receptacle or well which holds the paste or blacking, and the outer edge forming the rim on which the edge of the cover catches or closes. In carrying out my invention I widen the upper part of the box, all around the part which receives the paste or blacking, in such a manner as to remove the rim which receives the cover beyond the part of the box which is the receptacle for the paste or blacking, and form an intervening shelf or margin between said receptacle and the rim, whereby in opening and closing the box and in using the paste or blacking there is less liability of the paste or blacking being crowded over or upon the rim, and of the cover becoming soiled.
A in the drawing designates a blacking-box made according to my invention, and B designates the cover. The upper part of the box, from a line marked 0, is extended outward on an incline, and is then bent upward to form a rim, a, which shall receive the edge F of the cover B. The inclined extension, which is marked D in the drawing, serves to separate the rim of the box from the immediate vicinity of the paste or blacking rim b, which I intend shall occupy that part of the box which is inside of or below the extension D, and consequently the paste or blacking will not be liable to overflow or become crowded over or upon the outer edge or rim of the. box, as is the case with blacking-boxes as now commonly made, where the paste or blacking comes quite up to the edge or rim on which the cover closes.
My invention is applicable to boxes for other articles besides blacking. My improved box can be made of any material; and when made from sheet metal it can be stamped up in suitable dies, or can be spun into the required shape when soft metal is used, and it can also be made of paper.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
