MATCH-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
, Patented Nov. 21, 1916.
Application filed February 7, 1916. Serial No. 76,661.
To all 1071.011. it may concern Be it known that I, Enxnsr 1V. BROWN, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Butte, in the county of Silver Bow and moisture even though the box itself be immersed in water.
Another aim of the invention is to so construct the box that the match strikingportion or surface thereof will be likewise protected from moisture so that a person using the box will at all times have at hand a dry surface upon which the matches may be struck. v 7
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the match box embodying the present invention, the box being closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustra-ting the body and cover of the box in position about to be assembled. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the box closed.
The box embodying the present invention comprises two sections, one of which consti tutes the body of the box and the other the cover. The body section is indicated by the numeral 1 and is interiorly and exteriorly substantially cylindrical, it being closed at' one end as indicated by the numeral 2 and its said end constituting the bottom of the box. The other end of the said body 1 is, however, left open to permit of insertion and removal of matches and for a purpose to be presently explained, the body 1 is exteriorly milled or roughened as at 3 at its closed end, the milling extending entirely around the said end of the body. Adjacent its said end, the body is exteriorly slightly conical, as indicated by the numeral 4, this conical surface being located immediately inwardly of the milled portion 3 of the exterior surface of the body. As a result of the formation of the conical portion 4 the body between the said portion and its open end is exteriorly of a diameter less than that of its milled portion 3. The object in view in providing the conical surface 4 will be presently explained.
The cover for the box. comprises a body 5 which is exteriorly and interiorly cylindrical'throughout its length and closed at 7 one end as indicated by the numeral 6, the body being exteriorly milled as at 7 at its said closed end and this milled surface correspondingfto the surface 3 of the body 1. Interiorly the cover 5 is of a diameter slightly greater than the external diameter of that portion of the body 1 between the conical surface portion 4 and the open end thereof, so that the cover may be readily telescopically fitted upon the body in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing when it is desired to close the box. The
said cover 5 is, however, at its open end interiorly of a diameter slightly less than the major diameter of the conical portion 4 of the body inner surfaceat its said open end may be caused" to frictionally bind and snugly fit the conical surface portion 4, thereby excluding moisture from the interior of the box. Consequently, when the body and cover are assembledin" the manner stated,
the matches contained within the box will be protected from moisture. It will be understood at this point that the milled surfaces 3 and '7 provide means whereby the body and cover may be firmly grasped in either hand for the purpose of relatively rotating these parts to permit of their separation. V r i The exterior surface of the body 1 near the open endlthereof is roughened in any 1 so that when the cover is fitted to the body as above explained, its
as r
suitable manner so as to afford a match striking surface, indicated: by the numeral 8. By reference now to Fig. 3 of the drawings, it will be understood that inasmuch as the snug fit between the open end of the.
cover 5 and conical surface 4 of the body 1 will serve to exclude moisture from the interior of the box, moisture will also be prevented from reaching the match striking surface 8 and, therefore, a person using the box will at all times have at hand a dry surface upon which the matches may be struck. I 7
While, as before stated, the body and cover of the box are described as cylindrical.
inform, it will be understood that it may assume some other form if desired and that these parts may be made of any suitable material and finished in any desired manner.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A match box comprising telescopic sections, each having its inner end open and its outer end closed, one of said sections being provided exterior y with, a circumsc ibing conical portion, the wall of which is smooth and unobstructed and the other section being designed to hare its interior surface frictionally contact with said smooth coni;
cal portion whereby to exclude moisture from the interior of said box.
2. 2; match box comprising telescopic sections, each having its inner end open and its outer end closed, one of said sections be ing provided adjacent its closed end with an exterior conical surface designed to be engaged by the inner surface of the other section at the open end thereof when said sections are assembled, the first mentioned section being provided with an exterior match striking surface located between the conical portion and the open end thereof and adapted to be entirely housed within the other section when said sections are assembled.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for 3. A match box including telescopic cylindrical sections, each having its inner end open and its outer end closed, one of said sections near the closed end thereof being provided with a circumscribing conical surface adapted to be frictionally engaged by the inner surface of the mating section at the open end thereof, that portion of the first mentioned section between the conical surface and the open end thereof being of less diameter than the closed end of said section and having its exterior wall roughened to provide a match striking surface adapted to be housed within the mating section when said sections are assembled.
4. A match box comprising telescopic sections, each section having its inner end open and its outer'end closed, one of said sections being provided exteriorly with a circumscribing conical portion and the other section having its inner wall at the open end thereof cylindrical. in shape and smooth and unobstructed and adapted to frictionally engage the conical portion on the mating section when said sections are assembled.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
