. W SHING-MACHINE.
, Specification of Letters Batenti Patented Nov. 21, 1916.
Application filed 0ctober23, 1915. Serial No. 57,390.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAMTRAUBE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to washing machines such as are used in dry cleaning establishments, utilizlng an inflammable port it. However, the flame as it issues from the tub very often is carried by a draft to some open vat containing gasolene or other inflammable liquid setting the same on fire with disastrous results.
The object of the prevent invention is to provide means whereby the flame as it issues from the tub is confined and prevented from being acted on by drafts, thereby rendering the same harmless. In carrying out my invention, I provide a novel combination of parts whereby this result may be accom- -plished in the most simple and efiicient manner.
In the drawings illustrating this invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a washing machine with my.- invention applied "thereto, Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the machine'and Fig. 3 is a-section taken along line 83 of Fig.1. I
Referring in detail to the drawings, the washing machine consists of a tub 10, having a movable element therein driven by suitable gearing inclosed in a gear casing 11. The cover 12 of the tub is hinged upon suitable hing'es l3 and this cover is open for the insertion of the contents of the tub. When the materialis placedin the tub for the cleansing operation, the cover 12 is clamped by any suitable means to prevent. the same springing open when the explosion takes place. This clamping device may be a number of U clamps 14, attached to the frame of the tub by suitable chains 15, and engaging the front flange 17 of the cover by means of a set screw 18 which holds this flange against an angle iron 19. These clamps may be disposed at anumber of places along the flange 17 as at each end and at mid-length.
To provide a relief vent for the burnin gases when an explosion takes place, I pr? vide an-auxiliary cover or lid 20 at the rear of the tub. This lid is also hinged on the hinge 13 together with the cover 12, but opens from the-rear instead of from the front. Suitable stops consisting of arms 21 attached to the lid 20 serve to limit the opening movement of this lid when the same is forced open. This is illustrated clearly in dotted lines in Fig. 3. The arms 21 are formed preferably with curved faces- 22 conforming in contour to the curvature of the front cover 12. Also the disposition of these arms is such that when the lid 20 is raise it is substantially vertical, so that it forms a shield whichdirectsthe flames upward. At each end of the tub I also provide vertical shields 23 which are preferably attached to the wall and to a bracket 24 disposed at each end of the tub.
It willbe seen that between the wall, the
shields- 23. and the lid 20 when the same is opened, the flame is entirely confined to travel in a vertical direction toward the ceiling and is protectedsubstantially from all sides. Thus, when the explosion forces the lid open the flameshoots upward and then when the lid drops, it is put out with absolutely no damage, as the combustion at the interior of the tub is terminated for lack of oxygen and the exterior flame is confined where it will do no harm. The center of gravity of the lid 20 when it opens is so disposed that it tends to close the same as soon as the force of the flame has spent itself. Thus the flame is entirely put out automati cally, as the closing of the lid as above stated prevents the.acoess of oxygen to support the flame. e
It will be obvious, of course, that instead of forming the shields 23 at each side an ordinary hood may be used in conjunction with the lid 20. This hood or flue may extend clear-through the'ceiling to the atmosphere so as to give free vent to the flame. However, this will be clear without the necessity of further description or illustration.
Various other modifications. within the skill of a mechanic may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of theclaims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: I Q
1., In awashing machine, the combination with, a tub, of a cover therefor, means for locking the cover, an auxiliary cover which is free to open during the operation of the machine, and means communicating with the opening normally closed by the auxiliary cover for confining the flame when the' auxiliary. cover is opened by the force of an explosion. v
2. In a washing machine, the-combination with a tub, of a cover therefor, means for locking the same during the operation of .the machine, an auxiliary cover opening from the rear of'the machine, and means at each end of the machine for confining the flame when the auxiliary cover is opened by the force of an explosion.
3. In a washing machine, the combination with a tub, of acover therefor, means for locking the cover, an auxiliary cover which is free to open during the operation of the machine, stops for said auxiliary cor'er for limiting the opening movement thereof, and means surrounding the opening normally closed by the aux liary cover for confining "the: flame when the auxiliary cover is opened by the'force ofan explosion 4. In a washing machine, the. combination .with a tub, of a vent therefor consist ing of a lid which is free to open during the normal operation ofthe machine, means for determining the degree of opening of said lid to a vertical position, andsh elds at eachv end of the machine to confinethe flame to a Vertical direction; a
5. In. alwashing machine, the combination with a tub, of avent therefor comprising a lid which is free to open during the operation of the machine, and a flue device cooperating with said lid for confining the flame when the'lidv is forced open by an explosion of the vapor within the tub.
- (3. In a washing machine, the combination with a tub, of a rentv therefor comprising a lid which is free to-open during the operation of the machine, means whereby the lid wv'hcn open by force of an explosion within causes the lid to automatically close when the force of the explosion is spent, and means for confining the flame when the lid opens.
