B. STEINER.
FASTENER- APPLICATION HLED mac. 31. m5.

BERNHARD srnmnn, or BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14, 1916.
Application filed December 31, 1915. Serial No. 69,639.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNHARD STEINER, a citizen of the United States, residingat Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled' in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to garment fasteners and more particularly to that type comprising detachable members of Which each detachable portion is carried by one or another of the meeting edges of a garment.
An object of this invention is the pro vision of an eyelet having an enlarged opening therein to receive the head of a stud, a constricted neck to frictionally receive the shank of a stud therein and a slightly enlarged opening in which the shank of the stud normally rests.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an improved form of eyelet having an enlarged opening therein to receive the head of the stud, a constricted neck portion and a slightly enlarged extension, the opening comprising the different proportions having an underlying coacting spring member.
Further objects will be apparent from the following specification, appended claims, and drawings in which- Figure l is a plan view of a modified form of eyelet, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown an eyelet which may be stitched to the garment and in which 27 indicates a plate of any desired configuration having the edge thereof turned over as at 28. This plate.
may have the thread holes 29 formed therein at desired points and is provided with the slot resembling a keyhole having the en larged portion 30, constricted neck portion 31 and slightly enlarged extension 32. In the formation of the slot, a central web is formed and this is subsequently depressed to form a coacting spring for retaining the,
stud member properly in the slot and this spring comprises the ofiset portion 33 with the enlarged rounded portion 34, the conveXed spring portion 35 and the depressed portion 36 which continues into the extension 37 which connects the end of the portion 36 to the plate 27. A stud having a flattened head 38, shank 39 and flange 40 coacts with this eyelet and the head of the stud may be freely inserted in the enlarged opening 30, but as the stud is moved toward the tapering portion of the slot 32, the shank 39 frictionally engages or contacts with the walls of the constricted portion 31 and the head 38 also contacts with the convexe'd portion of the spring 35 so that after passing these impedances, the stud may be properly held in the portion 32 of the eyelet.
Modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims and the drawings are submitted for illustration purposes only.
Having thus described this invention, I claim 1. In a garment fastener, an eyelet of malleable metal and of irregular outline, said eyelet having an enlarged opening therein, a constricted neck and a tapering extension from the neck, a spring connecting the opposite ends of the opening in said eyelet, said spring being depressed near its opposite ends, and said spring having a convexed portion underlying the constricted neck portion of said opening.
2. In a garment fastener of the class described, a plate having a key-hole slot formed therein, said slot comprising an enlarged end for the admission of the head of a stud, a reduced neck and a tapering extension therefrom, and a spring formed on said plate by depressing a portion of'the metal thereof, outlined in the formation of the opening, said spring being depressed below the plane of said plate and said spring having reduced ends by which said spring is connected to said plate to permit the desired flexibility of said spring upon the admission or removal of a stud from the opening in said plate.
3. In a garment fastener of the class described comprising a plate having a slot formed therein, said slot having an enlarged end for the reception of a stud and a constriated extension, a spring formed on said plate by depressing a portion of the metal Within the outline of'the' slot,'said spring being detachable from said plate except on the extreme ends thereof, said spring having connection With said plate by having reduced portions, and said spring having a raised portion therein, underlying a constrieted neck portion of said slot between the enlarged end and'the tapering extension.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. a .BERNHARD STEINER.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five-cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, I). 0.
