SETTING FOR PRECIOUS STONES.
tings for Precious Stones, of which the following is a specification.
Ithas-become the practice in the jewelry industry to set a number of smaller precious stones in a group to resemble the upper portion of the brilliant style of cutting of a single larger precious stone.
It is the object of my invention to provide an improved setting closely. resembling a complete brilliant by means. which are hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.

A cluster-plate 11 is arranged to receive a group "of precious stones 12. It is shown provided with bores 13, shown tapering toward their lower ends, in which the, stones 12 are fastened as by bending the edges of thefupper ends of, the walls of the bores over the edges of the stones. The plate is preferably provided with a flat central portion 14 from which the plate slants downwardly, as shown at 15, toward the peripheral edge of the cluster-plate. The central portion is provided-with one of the bores 13 which is in linewith the axis of the setting,
the downwardly slanting portion being provided with bores surrounding the top portion, so that when the small stones are set in the bores, the setting may resemble the crown portion of asingle brilliant cutting of precious stone, the central portion resembling the table and the peripheral edge 16 of the cluster-plate resembling the girdle of the brilliant.

The body 17 is preferably provided .with facets to resemble the pavilion portion of a brilliant cutting of precious stone, and
is exemplified as having under skew facets 18 and lower facets 1!) formed thereon. Itis fastened so as to form the under portion of niy-improved setting. Thus the'clusterplate is provided with an annular periperal downwardly extending flange- 20 .within which the upper peripheral. edge ofthe body 17 is received. the flange being arranged to be bent inwardly for seeuring'the body 17 in place. lfdesired. the cluster-plate may .be provided with claws 21 whichextend dowmvardly, the body 17- being arrangedto be received between the claws. and the claws bent under the upper end of the'b'ody 17 for clamping the body to the under side oi the cluster-plate. The flange and claws-may be selectively. or colleetivelv employed. The
upper portion of the bod v 17 of light-transmitting substance may be provided with a recess 22, in which the lower ends oi any of the small stones 12 which project below the lower ends of the bores 13 are received. If desired, the recess 22' in the body 17 .(see Fig. 9). may be so formed that its inner wall will conform substantially to the general taper of the outer periphery of the body 17 of light-transmitting substance. The inner wall may be provided with a coating 23' of light-reflecting substance, such as foil or mercury, in order to-reflect thelight through the facets for refracting the same, the body of light-transmitting substance being at the outside of this coating.
My improved setting may be employed as a, single stone of brilliant cutting and be set in a larger setting 24, which may be part of a scarf-pin, ring, or other piece of jewelry. When so set the prongs 25 of. the larger setting 24 are arranged to cover the claws 21 on the clusterlate so as to hide the same, the prongs 25 eing bent as claws across the girdle of the cluster-plate between the small stones 12."
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A setting of the character described, comprising a cluster-plate and a group of small stones, said cluster-plate provided with upwardly extending fastening means for receiving said group of small stones to ting recesses for a group of small precious stones, small precious stones secured in said recesses to resemble the crown of the brilliant cutting, and a 'lowerless precious body provided with facets which forms the pavilion portioh of the brilliant cutting, said lower less precious body having light properties similar to the light properties of said small precious stones, said cluster-plate provided with downwardly extending clamping means clampingly received about the upper edge of said lower less precious body.
3. A setting for small stones to resemble a single stone comprising a cluster-plate provided with setting bores for a group of small stones, said bores opening upwardly for receiving said stones and opening downwardly for permitting the lower ends of said stones to project therethrough, small stones secured in said bores, and a lower body having light properties similar to the light properties of said small stones and provided with facets to resemble the lower portion of said single stone, said cluster-plate provided with downwardly extending clamping means clampingly received about the upper edge of said lower body for clamping said lower body to said cluster-plate, and said lower body provided. with an inner depression extending downwardly thereinto from its top in which the lower ends of said small stones of said group of small stones projecting through said bores are received.
4. A setting to resemble a brilliant cutting comprising a cluster-plate provided with setting recesses for a group of small precious stones, small precious stones secured in said recesses to resemble the crown portion of the brilliant cutting, and a lower less precious body having light properties similar to the light properties of said small precious stones and provided with facets to resemble the pavilion. portion of the brilliant cutting, the upper end of said lastnamed part being of a diameter substantially the same as the diameter of. said group of small precious stones, said cluster plate provided :With downwardly extendingflb clamping means clampingly received about the upper edge of said lower less precious body, and said lower less precious body provided with an inner cavity theinner wallwhereof is provided with a light reflecting substance.
5. In combination, a setting of the character described comprising a cluster-plate provided with setting bores for a group of small stones, said setting bores opening upwardly for receiving sald stones, and small stones secured in said bores to resemble the crown portion of a precious stone, a lower body having light properties similar to the light properties of said small stones and of substantially the diameter of said clusterplate and provided with facets to resemble the lower portion of said precious stone, the peripheral edge of said cluster-plate provided with downwardly extending claws clampingly received about the upper edge of said lower body for clamping said lower body'to said cluster-plate, andan inclosing setting comprlsing upwardly extending setting-prongs in line with and'received over said claws, the upper ends of said settingprongs being clamped over said peripheral edge of said cluster-plate.
