Be it known that I, JOHN l?. WEAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of indiana, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Reel-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in reel holders.

One of the objects of the present invention is to produce a simple and practical reel holder positive in operation and not likely to get out of order.

A further object is to provide a reel holder having few parts, compactly arranged, which will be easy and inexpensive to manufacture.

A further object is to provide a device of the above character of reduced size and greater capacity.

Other objects will be in part obvious from the annexed drawings and in part indicated in, connection therewith by the following analysis of this invention.

This invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of parts and in the unique relations of the members and in the relative proportioning and disposition thereof, all as more completely outlined herein.

To enable others skilled in the art so fully to comprehend the underlying features thereof that they may embody the same by the numerous modifications in structure and relation contemplated by this invention, drawings depicting a preferred form have been annexed as a part of this disclosure, and in such drawings, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional plan view of the complete device; Fig.'2 is a central sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 1; Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view showing the locking means; Fig. l is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a modification.

In order that a clearer understanding of the present invention may be had it will hereinafter be described with relation to its application to that type of reel holders particularly adapted for reeling or ceiling the chain or cord connected with eye glasses.

holder is secured to the dress or coat of the wearer, and the free end of the flexible chain secured to the eye glasses, it being understood that on removal of the eye glasses the chain may be easily and quickly wound upon the holder to its full extent.

Referring now to the drawings, 5 denotes the base plate or member of the casing provided with a pin 6 adapted to be secured in vertical position upon the coat of the user. A cover 7 incasing the reel proper is rigidly secured to the base plate in any suitable manner as by push joint 8, and it is provided with an opening 10 through which the cord or chain 11 is adapted to pass. One end of this chain 11 is provided with a hook 1:2 for attachment to the eye glasses, and the .other end, after being coiled about the winding drum, is secured to the drum at the point 13 in any desired manner.

The base plate is provided with a rigid central hub 14.- about which a winding drum lis adapted to freely rotate. This drum has a flanged periphery, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, about which the chain 11 is coiled.

lVithin the winding drum is a relatively narrow coiled spring 1G one end of which is secured to the inner face of the periphery of the drum at the point 17, Fig. 1, and the other end is secured to a pin 18 mounted upon the under side of a cup-shaped member 20 within the drum 15 and loosely sur rounding the stud 14. rlhis cup shaped member 20 is provided also with a relatively narrow coiled spring 21, one end of which is secured to the inner face of the member 2O at the point 22, while its opposite end engages a slot 23 in the upper end of the stud 14. lt will thus be seen that the device includes two spiral or coiled springs which might be said to be connected in tandem, so arranged and positioned as to be tensioned simultaneously as the chain l1 is unwound from the drum. That is, a movement of the connection 13 in one direction will cause a reactive movement of its opposite end connected with the stud 18 to move it in the same direction, thereby causing the end 22 of the spring to move at one-half the speed of the point 13, assuming of course that the springs are equally tensioned, and in the same direction. For example, ten complete revolutions of the winding drum 25 is mounted upon the basevplate 5 adapted to co-act with a suitable notch in the pawl.

Y The pin being preferably secured in a vertical position upon the coat of the wearer will place this holding pin 25 in such position as to be engaged by the pawl 9A by the action of gravity. A slight pull on the chain will move the pawl out of engagement with the detent 25, and when quickly released the pawl 24 will fly outwardly, due to centrifugal force and permit the spring to wind up the chain.

The reeling may be stopped at any time by holding the chain, which will cause the pawl to drop into locking engagement by gravity at any desired point.

In Fig. 4 is shown a modification in which the drum instead of being provided with a depression for the locking means, the casing 5 is provided with a depression 26 in which the pawl 24 is mounted, it being pivoted to the drum and operating in a manner similar to that above described.V This construction provides a larger space within the casing for the reel and springs.

It is believed that from the abowe description those familiar with the art will have no difficulty in understanding the mode of operation and manner of using a device of this character. It will be seen that the reel holder may be compactly constructed by reduction in the size of springs', yet maintain the desired capacity for fully winding the chain between the reel and the eye glasses. The invention Yis simple and practical in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and accomplishes, among others, all of the objects .and advantages herein set forth.

As many changes could be made in the above description and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention could be made, without departing from` the scope thereof', it is intended that all matter contained Vin the above description or shown in theV accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. in a device of the character described, in combination, a base plate having a fixed central stud, a flangeddrum loosely mounted upon said stud, a 'liexible member adapted vto be wound thereon, 'a flanged holder mounted within said drum and substantially half the width thereof, and coil springs connected in tandem between the drum and the central stud about which it rotates.

In a device of the character described, in combination, a base plate having a fixed central stud, a flanged drum loosely mounted upon said stud upon which afiexible member is adapted to be wound, a holder of substantially half the width of said flange mounted within said fianged drum, coil springs connected in tandem on opposite sides of the holder within Jche drum and acting between the drum and the central stud about which it rotates, and holding means acting between the drum and the base plate adapted to hold the reel in desired position.

In a. device of the character described, in combination, a base plate having a fixed central stud, a drum loosely mounted upon said stud upon which a ieXible member is adapted to be wound, a fianged holder mounted within said drum, coil springs connected in tandem between the drum and the central stud about which it rotates, and

holding means acting between the drum and the base plate adapted to hold the reel in desired position, said holding means comprising a pawl pivotally mounted upon the drum adapted to 'coact with a stud mounted upon the base plate. Y Y
