'NATI-IAN ROYACK, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
DOOR-OPENING DEVICE.
recante.
Application filed October 10, 1914.
To all Iwiz/0m t #my concern.'
Be it known that I, NATHAN Remon, a subject of the Czar of Russia, and resident of Brooklyn, in the county vof Kings and State of N ew York, have invented certain persons; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective self-opening door, Varranged to be actuated by the ordinary Vstep of an approaching person;
and the invention further includes certain details of construction hereinafter set forth.'
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like characters of reference are used to designate like parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 illustrates a side elevation of a door-frame and door arranged with the Vopening device embodied in the present invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view through the door-frame, showing the upper edge View of the door; and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the door-frame, showing a side edge view of tle door. Y
In the drawings, numeral 1 designates a door, hingedly mounted to the door-frame 2 by the spring-hinges 3, the latter normally actinO' to ooen the door outwardl as inb 7 ugo dicated by the dotted lines. Mounted upon the door is a latch-plate 4, of common construction, provided with the spring-projected latch-bolt 5, actuated through the usual stem by the handle 6, disposed on the interior side of the door. Upon the frame is Vfixed a socket-plate 7, adapted to receive the latch-bolt and hold the door in a closed position against theV action of the springhinges 3. Fixed to the latch-spindle on the interior side of the door, is an actuating arm 8, towhich is pivotally'jointed a connecting-rod 9, having at its lower end suitable supporting-lugs for the rotative support of the roller 10. The connection-rod is positioned upon the door and guided for vertical movement by the screwor stud 11, the` latter passing through aslot 12 in the vrod and secured to the door proper.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 7, 1916.
Serial No. 866,123.
Mounted in the Hoor adjacent the door is a movable foot-plate 13, pivotally supported at one end by the pin le and yieldingly supported at the opposite end by the spring 15. fit its upper surface the foot-plate is normally positioned on a level with the iioor linel, and is further provided with a projecting pin 17, adapted to engage the upper surface of the roller 10.
In operation, the free end of the footplate 13 is 4depressed by the weight of the person approaching the door, which movement causes the engagement of the pin 17 with the roller 10, serving to depress the latter and its connected rod 9 for eifecting the movement of the actuating arm 8 and the retraction of the latch-bolt 5, thereby permitting the door to open outwardly by the action of the spring-hinges 3. The closing niovementof the door may be effected from either side of the doorway while the footplate is in its normal upper position, and during this closing movement the exterior beveled section of the latch-bolt 5 engages the socket-plate 7, causing the bolt to be retracted and the descent of the arm 8 and the rod 9, the latter movement being infiuenced by gravity and acting to position the connected roller 10 below the pin 17, Xed upon the foot-plate, the relative arrangement being such as to allow a free lateral movement of the roller along the pin.
To prevent the premature operation of the door, guardrails 18 may be disposed on opposite sides of the doorway, as shown.
As thus arranged it will be evident that the door in its opening movement may be operated from the inside only, and that the movement may be effected without special act or attention on the part of the persons passing therethrough.`
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
adapted when the door is closed to engage said roller and downwardly urge said rod for the release of said latch.
2. In combination, a door-frame, a door mounted in Said frame, a Spring-projected latch mounted on the door and arranged for locking engagement With the frame, means normally acting to automatically open said door when the latter is unlatched, a rod vertically movable on the door and connect ed at its upper end to said latchfor the release thereof, a rollerl mounted at the lower end ofsaid vertically-movable rod, a footplate yieldingly supported for vertical Copies of this patent may be obtained for movement in the Hoor adjacent said door and normally heldV in upper position Yand adapted to be depressed by the action of the toot, and a pin liXed to said foot platel and adapted When the door is closed to engage said roller and downwardly urge said rod for the release of said latch.
Signed' at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this eighth day of lOctoher, A. D. 1914.
