Description
JAMES O. PERSONS, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
NON-INFLAMMAIBLE WATERPROOFING COMPOSITION.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES O. PERSONS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Infiammable Waterproofing Compositions; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to a new and improved water-proofing composition especially prepared for application to fabrics and the like, and has as an object to provide a water-proofing composition which is noninflammable and which, when applied to fabrics and the like, renders the same noninflammable, the composition and the fabric or material coated therewith being noncombustible.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a noninflammable water-proofing composition which may be easily applied and which will render the fabric to which it is applied impervious to water and moisture by entering all the interstices therein.
Other characteristics of the composition are, that it is'practically colorless and will not therefore discolor or alter the general appearance of the surface to which it is applied; and is not harmful or deleterious to the fabric to which it is applied.
In order to enable others to understand, prepare and apply my improved composition, I will now proceed to describe the same in detail giving what I have discovered to be the relative proportions of the ingredients for compounding the mixture. stating the relative proportions of the ingredients, it will be observed that no absolutely fixed relation exists between the same, but that the proportions of the Various ingredients may be changed within certain limits hereinafter stated, the proportions being varied to suit the particular kind of fabric or material to be treated.
The formula is as follows: ten to fifteen parts of pure rubber cement, four and onehalf to seven parts of spirits of tur entine, two to four parts of refined paraflih wax, twenty to forty parts of gasolene, and forty to seventy-five parts of tetrachlorid of carbon.
The ingredients above named, after selecting relative parts of the same within the limits mentioned, are thoroughly mixed and agitated until the particles are fully broken Specification of Letters Patent.

up. The gasolene and tetrachlorid of carbon serve as vehicles for the ingredients suspended therein and form a free flowing composition which may be readily applied as a thin coatlng and which will readily adhere to andpermeate the fabric or material to be coated. However, as some of the ingredients are inflammable substances which will read- 11y catch fire, and especially gasolene, tetrachlorid of carbon is added to the mixture which so changes the inflammable properties thereof that my composition, or the fabr c or material coated therewith, will not readily catch fire. It will be noted that a substantlal part of the composition is composed of tetrachlorid of carbon (40 to 75 parts being used) and that the proportion of tetrachlorid of carbon is equal or greater the noninflammability of the composition and the coated fabric.
The formula given is satisfactory and practlcal, but I do not consider the invention restricted to the employment of all the specific ingredients above named, the essential feature of the invention being the employment of the tetrachlorid of carbon; the other ingredients may be substituted by their equivalents in the composition, and in some instances for some uses the parafiin gasolene or both might be omitted; and while I have referred to gasolene in the formula, another equivalent light hydrocarbon might be employed.
What I claim is:
1. A water-proofing composition, comprising a mixture of dissolved rubber and tetrachlorid of carbon, the proportion of tetrachlorid of carbon being at least equal to that of the solvent in the dissolved rubber, to render the composition and fabric coated therewith noninflammable, substantially as described.
2. A noninfiammable water-proofing composition, comprising a mixture of rubber cement, spirits of turpentine, paraffin wax,
gasolene, and tetrachlorid of carbon, the pro- 10 to 15 parts of rubber cement, 4% to 7 parts of spirits of turpentine, 20 to 4:0 parts tics of Which are that it is noninflammable gasolene, and 40 to 7 parts tetrachlorid of and Water-proof, substantially as described. carbon, substantially as described. 7. 5. A composition of matter, comprising a 9. Anon-inflammable Water-proofing commixture of rubber cement, spirits of turpenposition comprising a mixture of rubber cetine, parafiin wax, gasolene and tetrachlorid ment, spirits of turpentine, paraflin wax, 40 of carbon, in substantially the following gasolene, and tetrachlorid of carbon in subproportions: 10 to 15 parts of rubber cement, stantially the proportions specified.
