Description

, UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB B. RAND, OF CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOSITIONS FOR POLISHING AND SCOURING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 120,397, dated October 31, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB B. RAND, of Concord, county of Merrimack, State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Composition for Polishing Purposes.
The nature of my invention consists of incorporating and combining ground quartz with pul verized alkali.
The quartz which I use, and which I prefer to use, is from the quartz mine in Lyndeborough,
New Hampshire; but I do not l mit myself to the quartz obtained from this mine, as no doubt a like material may be found elsewhere.
I first have the quartz crushed and ground to a suitable degree of fineness, which may be of different grades for diiicrent polishing purposes. With the ground quartz I mix pulverized alkali, either sal soda, soda-ash, or some other pulverized alkali most convenient for use. I mix the ingredients in about the following proportions, viz, ninety per cent. of ground quartz with ten per cent. of pulverized alkali. The above proportions may be varied to some extent without materially impairing the value of the composition. Quartz being of an acid nature it should be mixed with an alkali to fit and prepare it for polishing purposes, and when combined as above stated is a good article of commerce.
When used the composition must be wet with water, which will dissolve the alkali, and the liquid alkali combining with the particles of quartz fully prepares it for use.
For cleaning paint, scouring knives, polishing Britannia and silver-ware, and for all housekeeping and mechanical purposes, it is an excellent article.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The incorporation and combination of ground quartz with pulverized alkali for polishing purposes, substantially as set forth in the specification.
