Be it known that I, EDWARD M. ATKINSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Portland, county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Means for Attaching Handles to Implements, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for affixing the handle of an implement onto the head of the latter. A frequent fault of the usual type of implement is that the handle often breaks ofl' or works loose from the head of the implement.
One of the main objects of this invention therefore, is to. provide a construction by which the handle of any implement may be rigidly and securely attached to the head of the implement, thus making the structure firm and inflexible, and preventing the breaks or looseness which ordinarily occur in the handles of implements of present construction.
The features of my invention are all fully set forth in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an implement embodying my invention and showing it as used in connection with an adjustable handle. The broken lines of this figure show the handle in one of its adjusted positions. Fig. 2 is a front elevation partly in section of the parts shown in the broken lines of Fig. 1, and, Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing my device as applied to an implement in which the handle is non-adjustable.

A strip of flat metal 6 is bent over upon itself and is seated in the slot (Z, the lower ends of this strip being rounded as indicated by e in Fig. 2. On the sides of the handle 6 parallel with the slot (Z, are the 7 metal strips f which are formed so as to fit the chamfered edges 0 of the handle, and the lower ends f are parallel with the strips 6 but spaced therefrom. A metal ferrule g is wrapped around the handle 6 and the of the strips 6 spaced apart a distance which will permitthe insertion between them of the ends 6 of the strip of metal 6. In the adaptation of the invention shown in Fig. 3, the strips f are provided on their lower ends with flanges r and the strip a is provided on its lower ends with flanges u. The flanges are inserted through a slot in the blade at, and are bent upon the lower side of said blade, while the flanges r are bent over on top of the angle members 70. The rivets '0 hold these parts rigidly in place.
In this structure, the pivot pin and the registering holes are omitted, and the handle is thereby rendered non-adjustable.
I claim:
In an implement, a handle provided with chamfered edges on one end, a longitudinal slot in the handle intermediate said chamfered edges, an. inner-holding strip inserted in said slot, outer parallel holding strips on each side of the handle, a ferrule encompassing the handle around said outer strips, a fastening element connecting the ferrule, holding strips and handle, the upper edges of the outer holding strips being turned over the upper edge of the ferrule, an implement head, and means for rigidly connecting the holding strips and the head.
