STITCH TRANSFERRING AND DOUBLING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED IAN. 27, 1916.

/II/IIII/IIIIIIIII/I/IAHMIIIIIIIIII I), 1 I -1 LOUIS N. D. WILLIAMS, OF OGONTZ, PENNSYLVANIA.
STITCH TRANSFERRING AND IDOUBLING DEVICE.
mamie.
Application filed January 27, 1916.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Louis N. D. WIL- LIAMS, a citizen ofthe United States, residing in Ogontz, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Stitch Transferring and Doubling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
-My invention relates to a stitch transferring and doubling device for use in carrying out that method of closing the end of a tubular web which consists in engaging stitches around the end of the web by a set of transfer points, doubling one-half of these points over into register with the other half, doubling the stitches on one-half of the points, and then uniting these double stitches, the object of my invention being to prevent dulling or burring of the ends of the points by contact with one another when they ai'e folded over into registry with one another. This object I attain in the manne'r hereinafter set forth, reference b'eing had to the accompanying drawing, in which- IFigure 1 is a transverse sectional View of a transfer point structure made in accordance with my invention, showing the parts of the same in the position occupied by them when transferring the web from the machine upon which it was produced; Fig. 2
is a similar section showing the parts ad-- justed in position for doubling the stitches on one-half of the points; Fig. 3 is a top vieu1 of the device with the parts in the position shown in F ig; 1 and without the web upon the points, and Fig. 4 is a trans'- verse section illustrating a modified construction.
In the drawing, I have shown the transfer point structure as designed for removin'g the web from the needles of a circular knitting machine, although my invention is not limited thereto but is equally available for use in connection with machines of other types. h In .the drawing, 1-1a represent two seml- .circular sets of transfer points, the carrier therefor comprising two semi-circular members 2--2a so as to permitadjustment of the points so that all project in the same direction, as shown in Fig. 1, for application to the stitches of the web yon the machine, or so that one-half may be turned over the other half and the points caused to register Specification of Letters Patent.
Patentes Nav. a, asie., Serial No. 74,566.
My present invention consists in disposing the transfer points l in a different plane from that of the transfer points l, so that when the parts are in Fig. 2 the ends of the -points will not contact with one another and the risk of dulling or burring these points by reason of such contact will therefore be avoided.
In applying the point ring to the web.
upon the machine the points l will engage stitches of one courseand the points lLl will engage stitches of an adjoining course, and
when the points l1 are doubled over into register with the points l said points l will, when the stitches upon the points l are stripped therefrom as by means of the stripper `3, Fig. 2, be caused to engage with the remaining stitches of the course Whose other stitches were originally engaged by said points l or with the stitches of a course adjacent thereto, the points la, with the doubled stitches upon them, being then restored to their original position and the point carrier applied to a looping machine whereby the doubled stitches upon the points 1a can be united, the course of stitches comprising those originally engaged by the points l being first raveled out if desired.
The transfer points and the stitches of the Web are, for ease of illustration, shown as of a much coarser gage than they would be in practice.
When the points of one set are in the formof pins and those of the other set are grooved or channeled, as shown in Fig. 4, the pins may enter said grooves or channels as there illustrated when the points are adjusted so as to cause those of one set to register with those of the other set.
I claim 1. A stitch transferring device comprising two sets of stitch engaging points, and carriers therefor, one of which can be folded over the other, the points being so disposed in said carriers that when one of the latter in the position shownl is so folded over the other the points will be In testimony whereof, have signed my in different longitudinal planes. name to this specification, 1n the presence 0f 10 2.' A stitch transferring device comprising two subscribing witnesses. two semi-annularly disposed sets of stitch Y 5 engaging points one ofv longer radius than LOUIS N' D" WILLIAMS the other, and two semi-annularcarriers for 'Witnesses said points one of which can be folded over KATE A. BEADLE, the other. HAMILTON D. TURNER.
