Application led August 22, 191.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAN MALINIAH, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of Perth Amboy, in the county ot Middlesex and State o'lf New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Car-Starters, ot which the following is a speciiieation.
rlhis invention relates to .improvements in means for movinga car along a railway track and particularly ot the type adapted to be manually operated.
The principal object ot the invention is to provide means whereby the power is applied directly to the wheel th rf u`. f 'l1.aL lever ulcrumed closely adjacent to its point and adapted to be operated by the weight of the person using the same. i
Another object of the invention 1s to provide means whereby the implement may be rapidly and easily projected forward as the car is advancedand finally to provide such an implement in a form cheap to construct, the parts being strong and durable and particularly well adapted to perform their functions.
These and other objects o1a like character are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the implement positioned upon a track rail. Fig. 2 is a side elevational View, partially in section, of the same and indicating` vthe application of the implement, and Fig. 3 1s a transverse sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing the rail, indicated by the numeral 10, consists oit a flange, stem and head of the usual crosssection, the car wheel, indicated by 'the numeral 11, being such as is employed upon the trucks of the car.
rhe implement is comprised of a sectional base plate, the front section 1li of which has a pair of integrally formed, .downward eX- tending lugs 15 adapted to make contact with the head of the rail so that the implement is prevented from slipping ott sidewise. At the front of the plate other lugs 1G are provided the same rising vertically above the rail and provided with a pivot pin 17 forming a fulcrum for the lever 18, the front or operative end of which is formed with a plurality of sharply indicated eorrugations Specification of Letters Patent.

2O adapted to engage with the peripheryY of the .vhcel in such manner that slipping does not readily occur. The opposite outer end ot the lever 18 is provided with a pad 21 upon which the :toot ot' the operator may be placed so that his entire weight may be recei ved upon the lever and, as the fulcrum 17 is closely adjacent to the part which makes contact with the wheel, the 'weight is multr plied and applied with unusual direetness to secure the results desired.
Attached rigidly to the base portion 1la rear plate having lugs 93 at its outer end in which is a transverse pivot 2li carrying a roller 25 resting upon the head of the rail so as to be easily .moved therealong. Disposed between the plate 22 and the lever 1S is a U shaped spring 2G secured to the base element by rivets or otherwise and acting to maintain the lever 18 in a normally raised position so that the point Q0 is directed downward where it will engage with the periphery of the wheel'. Also rigidly attached to the base plate 22 is a bifurcated post 2S, the sides being brought together in the stem extensionI 29 at the top oi which is secured a double handle element 30, adapted to be grasped by the operators hands whereby he may be steadied in operating the implement, one or both feet being upon the same.
In operation the implement is placed lengthwise upon the track rail so that the lugs 1.3 rest upon the sides of the rail, and the roller 25 disposed upon the head of the rail, whereupon the implement is pushed forward by means of the handle until the corrugated end :20 makes contact with the wheel; by stepping upon the pad 21 the lever is depressed at that end raising the other end up and making contact with the wheel to cause the same to advance. The operator will then step oil the implement and push it :forward by means oit the handle 30 until a new grip is obtained, whereupon the procedure is repeated.
Having thus described my invention, whatl claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z- 1. In a car mover, the combination with a base-plate suited to rest upon a rail, means lor holding said plate in lateral engagement thereon, a lever i'ulcrumed on said plate, corrugations formed at the front of said lever adapted to engage with a car wheel, a spring interposed between said base-plate and said lever whereby the latter is held normally raised, and means whereby the implement may be propelled along` said rail, said means also acting to steady the operator.
2. In a ear mover, the combination with a base-plate embracing the head of a rail, Vertical lugs l'ormed at the front of said baseplate, a lever pivoted between said lugs, corrugations formed with the front end of said lever, a pad adapted to receive the foot of an operator 'formed with the rear oit' Said lever, a biifurcated guiding means receptive ol the lever, a spring` dispoeed between said baseplate and said lever whereby the latter is held in a normally.' operative position and a roller mounted at the rear of Said base-plate, adapted to rest upon the rail.
3. In a car mover, the combination with a sectional base-plate, lugs in the front section of the Same adapted to engage With the side olf' a rail, a roller carried by the second element or said sectional base-plate7 vertical lugs provided with the iirst named section, a lever pivoted therein, oorrugations formed with said lever, a foot pad formed at the opposite end of said lever, a guide secured to the second section or' said base-plate and means formed with said guide whereby said implement can be propelled.
`:infomed at New York, in the county of NewYork, and State of New York, this 15th day olf Aug., 1916.
