To Yf/Z- whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. LOMBARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at East llilton, in the co-unty of Franklin and Sta-te 'of Maine, have invented a new and useful Fastening Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fastener for covers such as used, for example, upon milk cans and the like, one of the objects of the invention being to pro-vide a simple and eilicient fastener which can be readily shifted to position to connect the cover to the can and which can be quickly adjusted to bind the cover securely on the can, thus to eifcctually seal it.
A further object is to provide a fastening utilizing nuts for tightening the same, the nuts being so mounted that, when turned in 011e direction for the purpose of tightening the fastening, they will direct the fastoning into engagement with the neck portion of the canso that the fastening' will be successively shifted to engaging position and then tightened during one operation of screwing the nuts.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

Fig. 2 is a plan view of the structure shown in Fig. l. Fig. 8 is a section on line A-B Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one end portion of the fastening bolt.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference l designates the neck portion of a can the mouth of which is surrounded by a band 2 which can be secured there-to in any desired manner and which forms an annular shoulder 3 at the lower edge thereof. If preferred, this band can be made integral with the can.

the mouth of the can groove 5 in the lower face thereof for the reception of the upper edge portion of the can. @utstanding from the peripheral portion of the cover are ears 6 each of which has a bore 7 extending therethrough. In each bore a bolt 8 is mounted for rotation there being a segmental head 9 at the lower end of the bolt while the upper end thereof is serewthreaded, as at l0 and is engaged by a wing nut ll. This wing nut has an annular groove l2 in the lower end portion thereof and in this groove is seated an eye 13 formed at the upper end of a spring iinger lei which is soldered or otherwise fastened to the ear 6. Extending downwardly from the outer end portion of the ear is a stop finger l5 designed to limit the rotation of the head 9.
In app-lying a cover and securing it by means of the fastening constituting' the present invention, said cover is placed in posi tion while the heads 9 are in contact with the stop fingers l5. After the cover has beenproperly positioned, the nuts 1l are successively tightened. As each nut l1 is turned to the right for the purpose of tightening it, its frictional engagement with the threaded bolt l0 will cause said bolt to turn therewith and to move its head 9 into position under the shoulder 3, the convex face of the head coming against the side of the can. Continued rotation of the nut will result in forcing the head against the shoulder so as to causethe cover to be pulled tightly down onto the mouth of the can, thus sealing the same. After all ofthe fastening devices have thus been tightened, the cover will be securely held in position. By turning each nut in the opposite direction, it will be held to the ear 6 by the spring lli so that rotation of the nut will result first in the downward movement of the bolt 8 so as to disengage the head 9 from shoulder 3 after which the frictional engagement of the nut with the bolt will result in the head being' swung outwardly against the stop iinger 15.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that but one operation is necessary either to apply or to disengage the bolt from the can. The iirst or applying operation is effected by the rotation of the nut in one direction to successively move the head 9 into engagement with the shoulder 3 and to tighten the head thereagainst, while the opand has a continuous eration of releasing the covernierely results in the continuous rotation or the nut in one direction to successively shift it out of engagement with the shoulder 3 and to then swing it back against the linger 15.
Importance is attached to the fact that the cover can be placed in any position desired on the can and the heads 9 will always move properly into engagement with the shoulder 3 when shifted in the manner. pointed out. lt is not necessary to provide any special recesses for the reception of the heads 9.
