YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR T THE DIAMOND MATCH COMPANY, OF CHICACi O, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
MATCH-HOLDER.
aeoaeea To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. FRIEDE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
- The object of this invention is to provide a simple, cheap and eflicient case or holder for'card or book-matches of the kind now extensively used as an advertising medium.
My invention, generally stated, comprises an open-end casing, (preferably approximat' ing the wedge-like form of a book-m tch Application filed'llecember 14,
mm Specification of Letters Patent.

7 view of the body member ofithe holder. Fig.
package,) one ofthe inner Walls of which is provided with retaining means, such as I spaced grooves or channels, with which the back or 'cover portion of the package may be readily engaged adjacent the heads and basal portions of the matches by sliding the package endwi se into the casing in a path at right angles to the length of In one form of my invention the casing comprises associated body and cover members, whereof the latter is slidingly fitted to the former so that the matches and the ignition or striking surface of the package may be readily uncovered; and in another form of my inventionthe cover member. is an integral or fixed part of the body member, and the match package (which is slidingly fitted to the internal grooves or ways of the struc ture, as in the other form,) is adapted to be partly withdrawn from either end of the structure to expose the matches and the igni tion or striking surface.
My invention comprehends the structura'l' characteristics above indicatedandalso various other novel and usefulfeatures of construction which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawihgsFigure l is a perspective View of a match-holder embodying the preferred form of my invention, showing the holder as containing a book-match pack age, and the cover member a's'partly with drawn to expose the matches and ignition surface of the package. Fig. 2 is an inner the matches.
3 1s a similar view of the cover member. Fig. 4: is an end View, enlarged, of the holder. Fig. 5 is a plan of the holder showing the cover as partly withdrawn from the holder member. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of the upper part of the holder, on a plane through the stops for limiting the movement of the cover relatively to the body, the dotted lines on-one side indicating the cover as slid open. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a modification showing the matches and ignition sur-' face as exposed on one side of the holder.
Fig. 8 is a rear view of the modified structure- The form of my improved match. holder illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6, inclusive, compresent ani: overhanging ledge lt. This ledge is preferably arched or curved as seen. The cover nember comprises a main portion having its lower and upper edges bent to provide a channel flange 15 and a ledge 16 respectively, which are so disposed'that they may he slidingly fitted to and upon the.
These members are so formed and proportioned that an ordinary book-match package with the cover fold a thereof cut oft or doubled backupon itself, justabove the heads of the group or groups of matches 3), may be inserted edgewise into and held fiat-v wise within the casing, that is to say, the
marginal portion 0 and the" upper cut or folded edge of the back a of the package may be slid snugly into the channel flanges 12, '13 respectively, withthe' matches. lying forward or adjacent the cover member, and thereby concealed and protected. The pack age may be slid into or from either open end effectually supported adjacent the head and basal portions of the matches.
By sliding the cover beyond either open end of the body member the matches and the ignition surface of the marginal portion of the card or package will be exposed, thus enabling the matches to be individually torn or broken off and their heads to be readily struck on the ignition surface. (See Fig. 1.)
Suitably-disposed stops are preferably provided on the two members in order to limit the range of the opening movement of the cover. In the present instance the ledge 16 of the cover member is provided near its ends with inwardly and downwardly extending tongues 17, struck from the metal,
. and the ledge 14 of the body member is also provided near its ends with inwardly and upwardly extending tongues 18 similarly struck from the metal; the two pairs of tongues thus being yielding and being in such opposed relation to each other that when the cover is slidto the right, the left hand tongue 17 glides upon and past the adjacent lower tongue 18, but interlocks with the opposing right hand lower tongue to determine therewith the extent of move ment of the cover to the right, and that when the cover is slid to the left the right hand tongue 17 glides upon and past the corresponding lower tongue 18, but interlocks with the opposing left hand tongue to limit the extent of movement of the cover to the left. By virtue of their opposite angular relation to each other the respective tongues permit the cover to be readily slid to its closed position upon the body member.
In Figs. 7 and 8 is shown a modified construction, wherein the body 10 and cover 11 comprising the casing, are fixed relatively to each other, and whereinthe match card or package may be slid beyond either open end of the casing in order to expose 'the matches and the ignition surface. In this 'form of my invention-the body and ,cover portions of the holder are preferably com posed of a single piece of material, the cover portion being a continuation of'the ledge 14 of the body portion, as shown. The body is conveniently provided 'at its edges with recesses 19 to permit the match card or package to be readilyseized and drawn 5 from either end of the holder, as desired.
' I claim? 1. A. match holder comprising a casing open at its ends and provided on one of its inner walls with vertically spaced means for slidingly engaging and holding a match package adjacent the head and basal portions of the matches, whereby said package can be slid into or from either open end of the casing in a path at right angles to the length of the matches. 1
2. A match holder comprising associated body and cover portions,-the body portion having therein top and bottom channels adapted to receive and slidingly hold the upper and lower edges respectively of a match package adjacent the head and basal portions of the matches, wherebysaid package can be slid into or from either open end of the casing in a path at right angles to the length of the matches.
3. A match holder comprising a body portion having therein top and bottom channels adapted to receive and slidingly hold the upper and lower edges respectively of a match package adjacent the head and basal portions of the matches, whereby said package can be slid into or from either open end of the casing in a path at right angles to the length of the matches, and comprising also a cover portion slidingly fitted, to the body portion, whereby relative bodily endwise movement of the casing and the tively to the ledge and bottom flange of the body portion. I
5. A match holder comprising a body portion having channels on its inner side spaced to receive and slidingly hold the upper and lower edges of a match package adjacent the head and basal portions of the matches; whereby sai package can be slid into or from either 0 en end of the casing in a path at right gles to the length of the matches, a cove slidingly fitted to said body portion, and a limiting stop for the cover, whereby relative bodily endwise movement of the casing and the cover can be effected in order to expose the matches and the ignition or striking surface therefor at either end of the casing.
I 6. A match holder comprising a body portion having means to receive and hold a match package, and comprising also a cover slidingly fitted to said body portion, contiguous parts of said body portion and cover having oppositely inclined yielding stops in spaced relation to each other;
7 A match holder comprising a tapering tubular casing open at its ends throughout.
their length and provided at its lower narrow edge with a channel or way which en- 4 gages and slidingly holds the lower edge of the nmrguml lgnltlon portion of the package, whereby the sand package can he slid into or from either open end of the casing in a, path at right angles to the length of the nuitches.
