Be it known that I, HiLARIo DE EsooBALEs, a citizen of Porto Rico, and a resident of the city of New York in the county of Richmond and' State of 2New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Wrapping-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates tol machines in which an article and a wrapper are passed through folding devices -whereby the wrapper is folded around the article.
The object of the invention'is to provide means whereby the article can' be effectually covered, and to provide means whereby the wrapper can be readily removed.A

The invention further consists in the use of a stationary wrapper folding channel having inwardly extending side projections which serve to fold overhanging side portio-ns of the wrapper, which overhanging side portions are caused by said rotary move-` ment of the channel section.

J ournaled in the main frame 1 is a driving shaft 2 to which is secured a wheel 3 having a series of gear teeth 4 and a convex peripheral surface 5 without teth. The
Vgear teeth 4 are adapted for engagement with gear teeth 6 on a wheel 7 which is secured to a vshaft 8. At the end of a half revolution of wheels 3 and 7, the convex l surface 5 rides in a concave surface 9 formed onwheel 7 ,thereby causing the wheel 7 and shaft 8 to remain stationary during another half revolution of wheel3.
Forming part of shaft 8 is a channel 'section 10 extending transversely to the shaft and provided with upper and lower plates 11, and. projections 12 extending inward from the two sides thereof. Located between said upper and lower plates and'said inwardly extending side projections is a short plunger 13 adapted for sliding movement in the channel section.
Secured to shaft 8 is a gear wheel 14 in mesh with a gear wheel 15 lwhich is loosely mounted on a shaft 16. Securedl to shaft 16 is a gear wheel 17 in mesh with an intermediate gear wheel 18 which is in mesh with and driven by a gear wheel 19 secured to 16 is a wheel 20provided with a cam groove 21 in which a roller 22 on an arm 23 travels. Arm 23 is secured to a rock-shaft 24 hav ing arms 25 secured thereto. The knife 53 will have cut the tape and paper sheet when the feed rollers have ceased to move, and the tape and paper sheet then fall to the supports 54 and 55. Cutting of the tape and paper sheet is effected by means l of the movable knife blade 53 coperating with the stationary knife blade .56. The movable blade 53 is attached to an arm 57 which is secured to a vertical shaft 58 to which an arm 59 carrying a roller 60 is secured. Roller 60 engages a cam 6l secured to the driving lshaft 2, which cam serves to actuate the knifev 53.
Secured to the driving shaft 2 is a cam 62 which is engaged by a roller 63 on a lever l 64 pivotedat 65.
The free end of lever 64 is connected by a link 66 to a plunger 67 to slide in guides 68. When plunger 67 is moved to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 6, an article 69 falls to rest in front of the plunger. Forward movement of the plunger then causes the article to be moved to rest in front of a plunger 70, as shown in -Figs V1 and 2. Plunger 70 is free to slide in guides 71 and is connected by a lever 73 pivoted at 74. Lever 73 is connected by a link 75 to a crank arm 76 secured to the driving shaft 2, so that rotation of the shaftcauses reciprocating movement of the plunger 7 O;
Forward movement of plunger 70 causes the article 69 to be moved against the tape wrapper, further movement of the plunger then causing the article, tape and wrapper to be moved into the channel section 10. Movement of the article and wrapper into the channel section causes the short plunger 13 tobe moved along the channel section to the position show'n in Fig. 5. During this movement the wrapper and tape take against the upper and lower plates and overhanging side portions of the wrapper take against the inwardly extending side projections 12 of the channel section, causing the wrapper and tape to be folded in the manner shown in Figs. 3 and 5. During return movement of plunger 70 the channel section links 72 to the free end of the gear teeth 4-on wheel 3 engage the gear i teeth 6 on wheel 7, thereby causing rotary movement of the channel section in the direction indicated by -the arrow. During a lhalf revolution of the channel section the unfolded portion b of the wrapper and tape will strike against a stationary part 77 of the machine, causing saidpart b to be folded in the manner shown in Fig. 4, at which time the cam wheel 20 Will have moved 'the paste applying rollers 28 against the part c of the wrap er as shown in Fig. 1. It will be p seen that this half revolution of has caused the short plunger 13 to again be at the entrance end of the channel section. When another article, tape and wrapper has been moved into the channel section, and caused the short plunger 13 to be moved along the channel section, the movement of said short plunger will causethe article, tape and wrapper first named to be moved out of the channel section. During this movement ofthe first named article, tape and Wrapper, the unfolded part 0 of the Wrapper and tape takes against the stationary part 77, and overhanging side portions d of the wrapper take against projections 78 extending inwardly from a stationary wrapper folding channel 79, causing the lparts c and d to be folded -1n the manner shown in Fig. 7. The paste 31 applied to the part c of the wrapper will cause said part -to be held securely to the previously folded part of the wrapper, thereby holding the unpasted tape having the end e protruding beyond the end of the wrapper.
The stationary wrapper foldi'ng channel 79 is provided with an upper plate 80 having two inclined folders 81 extending downward Ain range with the upper side flaps f of the wrapper, so that as the article and wrapper are moved into the stationary channel, the upper flaps f by taking against the inclined folders 81 will be folded down in the manner shown in Figs. 5 and 8.
By reference to Fig. 1 it will be seen that during the travel of the article and wrapper from the channel section into the stationary channel, the folded parts Z of the wra per will be bearing against the inwardly extending side projections 12, so that there Will be little tendency for the parts d to buckle previous to the time they reach the side projections 78, at which time they will be protected by the flaps 7". g
Secured to the driving shaft 2 is a chain wheel 82 which drives a chain.83 riding over a chain wheel 84 secured to a short shaft 85. Secured to shaft 85 is a gear wheel 86 in mesh with agear wheel 87 which is secured to a shaft 88. Near each end of shaft 88 is secured a roller 89 which travels in contact with paste 9() Traveling in contact with each of the paste coated rollers .89 is a wheel 92, one of said CTE in a receptacle 91.

The lower plate 95 of the 'stationary channel is provided with two inclined folders 96 extending upward inrange with the lower flaps g so that as the the stationary channel, the paste ,coated lower iiaps g by taking against the inclined folders 96 will be folded up against, the folded flaps f, in the manner shown in It will be seen that in the completed package shown in Fig. 9, the protruding end e of the tape can be used for the purpose of tearing the paste secured wrap er, owing to the fact that no paste has to the tape. n
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A wrapping machine comprising a wrapper folding channel; means whereby an article, a strip of narrow tape and a wrapper can be forced into said wrapper folding channel, whereby certain portions of the tape and wrapper are folded upon the article, said tape being folded between the article and the wrapper; means whereby paste can be applied to an unfolded portion of said wrapper, an unpasted and unfolded portion of said tape then protruding beyond the edge of said unfolded portion of the wrapper; means whereby said article, tape and wrapper can be moved from said wrapper folding channel; and means forcauslng said tape and paste coated wrapperto be folded sa1d upper and lower plates cause said tape upon the wrapper foldedvupo lthe article.
2. Al wrapping machine comprising a wrapper folding channel aand a plunger having reciprocating movement in line therewith; a support for an article between said plunger and saidchannel, a support for a wrapper between said article and said channel, and a support for a narrow tape between said w-rapper and said article; means for actuating said plunger whereby forward movement thereof causes said article to be forcedagainst said tape and wrapper, further forward movement of said plunger causing said article, tape and wrapper to be forced into said wrapper folding channel, whereby said tape and wrapper' are folded upon the article; means whereby paste can be applied to an unfolded portion of said wrapper, an unpasted and unfolded portion of said tape then protruding beyond the edge een appliedl of said unfolded portion of the-wrapper; means whereby said article, tape and wrapper can be moved from said wrapper folding channel; and means for causing said tape and paste coated wrapper to be folded upon the wrapper folded upon the article.
3. A wrapping machine comprising a stationary frame and an intermittently rotatable wrapper folding channel section having upper Iand lower plates and inwardly -eX- `tending sideprojections; means whereby an article, a strip of narrow tape, and a wrapper can-be forced into said rotatable channel section, whereby said upperand lower plates cause said tape and lwrapper to be folded upon the article, and whereby said inwardly extending side projections causev certain other portlons of the wrapper to be folded upon the article; means for caus- 1ng rotary movement of said channel section, whereby unfolded portions of said wrapper and tape are forcedagainst said stationary frame thereby causing said tape sov and'wrapper to be furtherfolded upon thearticle; means whereby paste can be applied to an unfolded portion of said wrapper, anV
unpasted and unfolded portion of said tape then protruding beyond the edge of :said unfolded portion of the wrapper; and meansv whereby said article, tape and wrapper canl be moved from said channel section, whereby 'said unpasted tape yand said paste coated wrapper are forced against said stationary frame, thereby causing said tape and paste coated wrapper to be folded upon the wrap,- per folded upon the article.
4. A wrapping machme comprising awrapper folding channel having inwardly l extending side projections, an upper plate provided with downwardly extending incllned side folders, and a lower plate provided with upwardly extending inclined side folders; means whereby an article, a` strip of narrow tape, and a wrapper can be forced into'said wrapper folding channel, whereby and wrapper to be folded upon the article; a portion of said tape then protruding beyond one edge of said wrapper; means whereby said article, tape and wrapper can the article, and whereby upper unfolded side l flaps of the wrapperare forced against said inclined side 'folders of the upperv plate thereby causing said upper flaps to be folded upon the article; and lower unfolded side flaps of the wrapper are forced against said inclined side folders of the lower plate, thereby causing said lower flaps to be folded upon the article.
5. A wrapping machine comprising an intermittently rotatable channel section having upper. and lower plates and inwardly extending side projections; a stationary wrapper folding. channel in line therewith, and -having inwardly extending side projections, an' upper plate provided with downwardly extending inclined side folders,
with upwardly means and a lower plate provided extending inclined side folders;
whereby an article and a wrapper can beforced into saidv rotatable channel section, whereby said upper and lower plates and inwardly extending side projections thereof.
cause certain portions of the wrapper to be folded upon the article; means for causing rotary movement of said channel section, whereby an unfolded portion of said wrapper is forced against one of the plates of said stationary wrapper folding channel, thereby causing said wrapper to be further folded upon the article; means whereby said article and wrapper can be moved from said rotatable channel section and through said stationary --wrapper folding channel, whereby said inwardly extending side projections of the stationary channel cause certain unfolded side portions of the wrapper to be folded upon the article, said downwardly extending inclined side folders causing upper unfolded'side flaps of the wrapper to be folded down upon the article; means whereby paste can be applied to lower unfolded side iiapsof the wrapper during their travel through said stationary channel; and said upwardly extending inclined side folders causingsaid lower paste coated side flaps to be folded ed uppe'riaps. y Y wrapping machine comprising a stationary frame and an intermittently rotatable. wrapper folding channel section.; means whereby an article, a strip of narrow tape and a wrapper can be forced into said up against 'said foldrotatable channel section, whereby certain portions of the tape and wrapper are folded upon the article, said tape being folded between .the article andthe wrapper; means of said tape then for causing rotary movement of said channel section, whereby unfolded portions of said tape and .wrapper are forced against said stationary frame thereby causing said tape and wrapper to be 'further folded upon the article; t means whereby paste can be applied to an unfolded portion of said wrapper, an unpasted and unfolded portion protruding beyond the edge of said unfolded portion of the wrapper; and means whereby said article, tape and wrapper can be moved from said channel Vsec- 0 tion, whereby said unpasted tape and said paste coated wrapper are forced against said stationary frame, thereby causing said tape and paste coated wrapper to be folded upon the wrapper folded upon the article. 7. A wrapping machine comprising a stafurther folded tion of the wrapper; and means `tionary frame and an intermittently rota-- table wrapper folding channel section, a vplunger having reciprocating movement in line with said channel section, a support for an articlebetween said plunger and said channel section, a support for a wrapper between said article and said channel section, and a 'support for a narrow tape between said wrapper and said article; means foractuating .said plunger whereby forward movement thereof causes said article to be forced against further forward movement of said plunger causing said article, tape, and wrapper to be forced into said channel section, whereby said tape and wrapper are folded uponv the article; means for causing rotary movement of said channelv section, whereby unfolded portions of said tape and wrapper are forced against said stationary frame, thereby causing said tape and wrapper to be upon the article; means whereby paste can be applied to an unfoldportion of said wrapper, an unpasted and unfolded portion of said tape then protruding beyond the edge of said unfolded porwhereby tape and wrapper can be moved said article,
whereby said unfrom said channel section,

A wrapping machine comprising an intermittently rotatable channel section having upper and lower plates and inwardly extending side projections; a stationary wrapper folding channel in line therewith, and having inwardly extending side projections, an upper plate provided with downwardly extending inclined side folders, and a lower plate provided with upwardly extending inclined side folders; means whereby an article, a strip of narrow tape, and a wrapper can be forced into said rotatable channel section, whereby said upper and lower plates cause said tape and wrapper to be folded upon the article, and whereby said inwardly extendingv side projections of the channel section cause certain other portions of the wrapper to be folded upon lthe article; means for causing rotary movement of said channel section, whereby unfolded portions of said Wrapper and tape are forced against one of the plates of said stationary wrapper folding channel, thereby causing said wrapper and tape to be further folded upon the article; a portion of said tape then protruding beyond an edge of said wrapper; means whereby said article, tape and wrapper can v channel cause certain unfolded side portions of the wrapper to be folded upon the article, said downwardly extending inclined side folders causing upper unfoldedside iiaps of the wrapper to be folded down upon y the article; means whereby paste can be applied A to lower unfoldedl side flaps of the wrapper during theirl travel through said stationary channel; and said upwardly extending inchned side folders causing said lower paste coated side flaps to be folded up againstv said folded upper flaps.
9. A wrapping machine comprising an in-, termittently .rotatable channel section having upper and lower platesand inwardly extending side projections; a stationary l wrapper folding channel in'line therewith,
and having inwardly extending side projections, -an upper plate provided with downwardly extending inclined side folders, and a lower plate provided withv upwardly extending inclined side folders; means whereby an article, a strip of narrow tape, and a wrapper can be forced into said rotatable channel section, whereby said upper and lower plates cause said tape and wrapper to be folded upon the article, and
whereby said inwardly extending side prov folded upon the article; a portion of said 'tape then protruding beyond one edge of said wrapper; means whereby said article, tape and wrapper can be forced from said rotatable channel section, and through said stationary wrapper folding channel, whereby unfolded portions'of said wrapper and tape are forced against said plate, thereby causing said portions of the wrapper` and tape to be folded 'upon the article; and certain unfolded side portions of the wrapper are forced against said inwardly extending side projections of the stationary channel, thereby causing said side portions to be folded upon the article; and whereby upper unfolded side aps of the wrapper are forced against said inclined side folders of the upper plate, thereby causing said upper flaps to be folded upon the article; and\ lower unfolded side flaps of the wrapperare forced against said inclined side folders of the lower plate, thereby causing said lower flaps to be folded upon the article.
10. A wrapping machine comprising a stationary frame and an intermittently rotatable channel section having upper and lower plates and inwardly extending s ide projections; a stationary wrapper folding channel in line therewith and having in- .'wardly extending, sideprojections; means whereby an article, a strip of narrow tape and a wrapper can be forced into said rotatable channel section, whereby said upper and lower plates cause said tape and wrapper t0 be .folded upon the article, and whereby said'inwardly extending side projections of the channel'sectioncause certain other portions of the wrapper to be olded upon the article; vmeans for causing r itary movement of said channel section, whereby unfolded portions of said tape and wrapper are forced against said stationary frame, thereby ,causing said tape and wrapper to be further folded upon the article; means whereby paste can/be applied to an unfolded portionv of said wrapper, an unpasted and unfolded portion of said tape then. protruding beyondthe edge of said unfolded ortion of the wrapper; means whereby lsaid article, tape and wrapper can be moved from said rotatable channel section, and into said stationary wrapper folding channel, whereby said unpasted tape and said paste coated wrapper are forced against said stationary frame, thereby causing said tape and paste coated wrapper to be folded upon the wrapper folded \upon the article; and whereby certain unfolded side portions of the wrapper are' forced against said inwardly yextending. side projections of the stationary channel, thereby causing said side portions A to be folded upon the article.
11. A wrapping machine comprising an intermittently-rotatable channel section having upper 'and lower plates and inwardly extending sidel projections; a stationary` wrapper folding channel in line therewith, and having inwardly extending side projections, an upper plate provided with downwardly extending inclined side folders, and a lower plate provided with upwardly extending inclined side folders; means whereby an article and a wrapper can be forced into said rotatable channel section, whereby said upper and lower plates and inwardly extending side projections thereof cause certain portions of the wrapper to be folded upon the article; means for causing rotary movement of said channel section, whereby an unfolded portion of said wrapper is wrapper to be folded upon the wrapper folded upon theY article; and certain unlforced against one of the plates of said stav mesma folded side portions of the wrapper 'are forced against said inwardly extending side projections of the sta y causing said side channel, theretionary to be folded portions 5 upon the article; and whereby upper unfolded side laps of the .Wrapper are forced against said inclined per plate, thereby ca to be folded upon the 1o by paste can be applied to lower unfolded side flaps of the wrapper; said movement of the article and wrapper through the stationary folding chan side folders ofthe upusing said upper flaps article; means wherenel causing said paste I HILARIO DE ESCOBALES.
