T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JASPER J. CURRIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of WVayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Paper-Roll Holders, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to paperroll holders and its object is a comparatively simple and inexpensive device for holding rolls of paper towels, toilet-paper or the like, and in which the paper is in a continuous length perforated at regular intervals cross-wise of the strip whereby a portion desired for use may be readily separated from the roll. In devices of this character in which the perforations are at regular intervals and in which the roll may be turned a predetermined extent to enable a sheet to be unwound at each operation, greater revolution of the roll is required to unroll a single sheet as the roll becomes less in diameter by removal of the sheets.
An object of the invention herein disclosed is a holder for rolls of paper perfo. rated as stated in which the rotation of the roll is so limited when the roll is of full size that practically only a single sheet may be unwound at each actuation of the device and, that upon the roll-having been reduced in diameter to a certain extent by removal of sheets, the limiting means is automatically reset to allow greater degree of rotation. By such arrangement the extent of the rotation of the roll is always limited, but as the roll is used, the extent of rotation is variedin order that only a single sheet may be unwound at each actuation of the device either when the roll is new or when the roll has been sufliciently reduced in diameter as to require further rotation of the same to unwind a single sheet.

These and other objects and novel features of the invention are hereinafter more fully described and claimed as shown in the accompanying drawings ofthe preferred form of the device in which- Figure 1 is aperspective view of a paper roll holder embodying my invention. The bracket for supporting the roll is of an ordinary type, provided with a bar or base 1 apertured to receive screws for se-- curing it to a wall or partition and is also provided with a pair of detachablearms 2 and 3 extending forward substantially at a right angle to the base 1. As indicated more clearly in Fig. 2, the base 1 at each end is provided with curved lugs 4 and .5 and the arms are apertured at the ends to engage over the said lugs, therebeing a portion 6 of each of the arms which passes behind the lugs when in position shown in Fig. 1. Each of the arms is also provided with lugs 7 at both the top and bottom edge which engage against the base 1 and prevent movement of the arms toward each other when in the assembled position shown in Fig. 2. By this arrangement of the arms and base 1, the said arms are held in pivotal relation with the base and may be turned in the lug, which acts as a hinge member. The arms may be disengaged from the base by turning in the direction of the arrow, as shown at the right of Fig. 2, to position substantially parallel with the base 1.
The arm 2 has a rod or shaft 8 secured thereto .and preferably held from rotation thereby. The arm 3 is provided with a socket 9 and 'the adjacent end of the shaft is provided with a sleeve 10 slidable longitudinally thereon and adapted to enter the socket 9. The sleeve is provided with a slot 11 and the shaftis provided with a pin 12 preventing removal of the sleeve from the shaft. A spring 13 is also positioned on the shaft between the end of the sleeve and a pin 14 passing through the shaft and tends to hold the sleeve extended relative to the shaft. Bymovement of the sleeve on the shaft the end of the sleeve may be with drawn from the socket 9 to allow the arm 3 to swing on the lug 5 in the direction shown by the arrow in Fig. 2, in which positlon of parts the paper roll may be placed on or removed from the shaft. With the sleeve extending into the socket as shown in Fig. 2,
the arm may not be turned on the lug as the socket is of considerable depth and insertion of the sleeve end therein prevents swinging of the arm.
Adjacent the arm 2 and rotatably mounted on the shaft is a limiting device 15 and the arm 2 is provided with a lug 16 extend ng into the path of movement of the hmlting device or lever 15 about the shaft as an axis. The lug limits the extent of rotation of the device 15 in either direction about its axls. Also rotatably mounted on the shaft contiguous to the limiting device 15 is an actuator 17 of disk-likeform and provided with portions 18 and 19 either of which may engage the end 20 of the limiting device formed to extend into the path of movement of said portions and to be engaged by the same under conditions hereinafter described. These portions 18 and 19 may be formed or provided in various ways as will occur to those CIT skilled in the art the preferred form of which is shown in the drawing. The actuator 17 also carries what I have termed a resetting pawl or dog 21 pivotally mounted on a shaft carried in bearings 22 provided on an extension of the actuator as indicated clearly in Fig. 1. The resetting pawl is provided with a coiled spring 23 as indicated in Figs. 7 and 8, tending to force the pawl to the position shown in Fig. 6. Also the aperture in the pawl through which the shaft extends is suificiently large to receive the spring which is thus inclosed. The pawl, in the normal position shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4c,-engages against the end 20 of the limiting device. Under this condition rotation of the actuator carries the limiting device therewith and the actuator may be rotated from the original position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. l, at which point further rotation is prevented by the lug 16 on the arm 2. With the pawl 21 engaging the end 20 of the limiting device, therefore, the actuator may be turned in a forward direction only about seven-eighths of a revolution. If now the dog 21 be withdrawn from engagement with the end 20, the actuator may be turned to a greater extent until the portion 19 engages the end 20 of the lever which is the position shown in Fig. 5, so that practically a revolution and a half may be made under this latter condition and with the parts in the relative position as shown in the drawings. By altering the positici-i of the portion 19 relative to the portion 18 a greater or less amount of revolution ofthe actuator may be secured as may be desired in practice. As is hereinafter shown the paper roll engages the actuator so that rotation of the roll rotates the actuator and thus it may be seen that the paper roll may be rotated a certain extent whenthe pawl 21 is in engagement with the end 20 and may be turned an additional extent when the pawl 21 is out of engagement in the end 20, and forward rotation of the roll under either condition is positively limited whereby the rotation of the roll by drawing forward on the loose end of the sheet is suddenly stopped causing a severing of the sheet on the perforated line.
Paper rolls of the general character adapted for use with this device are usually formed on a paste-board core or tube 24 ex tending the full length of the roll as shown in Fig. 2. Preferably in one end of this tube and secured therein by means of glue or otherwise I insert a second tube 25 usually less in length than the tube 24 as indicated in Fig. 2. In the end of this tube 25 is positioned a metal plate 26 having a square central aperture for a purpose hereinafter de scribed. A metal plate 27 is also provided in the opposite end of the tube 25 centrally ap-- ertured to pass over the rod and springs thereon. The tube 25 may be dispensed with however, and the plate 26 inserted in the end of the tube 24 if so desired. The ac tuator 17 is provided with a square hub 28 practically fitting the square aperture in the adjacent plate 26. On the shaft 8 is a coiled spring 29 one end of which is fast to the shaft and the other end of which is secured to the hub 28 as indicated in Fig. 2, and the said spring is placed under tension when the parts are assembled. By thus assembling the parts with the spring 29 under tension as stated, the tension of course is increased by forward rotation of the roll and when re leased the tension of the spring reverses the The resetting pawl 21, as heretofore stated, is pivotally mounted in an extension of the actuator which extension is bifurcated to allow the pawl to swing on its shaft. As shown in Figs. 2, 6, 7 and 8, the pawl on that side ofthe actuator adjacent the end of the paper roll is provided with a wing or Wings 30 greater in width than the body of the pawl or bifurcation in which it swings. The spring 23 on the pawl shaft tendsto swing the pawl to the position shown in Fig. 6, with the body thereof out of engagement with the end 20 of the limiting device 15. On'placing the paper roll on the shaft, the end thereof engages the wing 30 of the pawl forcing the body of the pawl between the supports therefor, and the end 20 of the limiting device is thus held between the portion 18 of the actuator and the pawl as may be understood from Fig. 3. v
To prevent the paper roll moving longitudinally of the shaft and thus releasing the pawl, a retainer 31 is provided. This retainer is mounted on the cylindrical wall 40 of the socket 9 on the arm 3 and is provided with a hub portion 32 practically fitting the cone 24 of the paper roll and also has an annular flange 33 engaging the end of the roll as shown particularly in Fig. 2. The retainer is movable longitudinally of the cylindrical socket wall or hub and a spring 34: is interposed between the wall and inner endof the retainer as shown tending to force the retainer outward away from the arm and thus hold the roll from longitudinal movement and prevent the pawl from being retracted to release the limiting device 15. A pin or pins 35 are provided adjacent the end of the wall or hub 40 preventing the retainer from passing off from the hub and a washer or thrust bearing 36 is interposed between the end of the spring and adjacent portion of the retainer so that the retainer may revolve freely without necessarily revolving the spring.
\Vith a full roll, as shown in Fig. 2 in which the pawl is held in a manner to engage the end 20 of the limiting device, the roll may be turned nearly one revolution at each actuation thereof but, when by usethe roll has been reduced in diameter to that shown by the dotted line a in Fig. 6, the pawl is no longer held by the roll end but is freed to action by the spring 23 which throws the pawl out of engagement with the end 20 of the limiting device, whereupon the roll and actuator, by reason of the limited relative movement provided for between the actuator and limiting device, may be rotated more than a single revolution until the portion 19 engages the said end 20 and the limiting device 15 engages the lug 16 on the arm 2. Thus, when the roll is new, practically a single sheet only may be unwound at each actuation and when the roll has been moved except in the manner provided for by unwinding a sheet at a time. The parts being thus inclosed as stated, tampering with the device by unauthorized persons is prevented.
Having thus fully described my invention,
its utility and mode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a paper roll holder adapted to allow limited forward or reverse rotation of the roll, a spring tending to resist forward rotation of the roll and adapted to reverse the direction of rotation thereof upon release of the roll, means rotatable with the roll limited in the extent of its rotation in either direction, a device held by the roll when of certain diameter adapted to lessen the extent of forward rotation of said rotatable means, said device being released from operative relation upon decrease in diameter of the roll a definite extent whereby the parts are reset to allow full forward rotation of the roll. I 2. In a paper roll holder, means for rotatably supporting a paper roll thereon, a rotatableelement limited in extent of rota-- tion in either direction, acsecond element rotatable with the roll, a spring tending 'to resist forward rotation of said second element, means forholding said second element in fixed relation with the first named element, said means being'releasable to allow a definite movement of the second named element relative to the first named element,
is of a certain diameter and released fromoperative relation to allow relative movement of the'two elements when the diameter of the roll has been decreased a certain extent.
3. In a paper roll holder adapted to rotatably support a paper roll, a rotatable element, a stop limiting the extent of rotation thereof in either direction, an element rota-- table with the roll, means for holding said second named element in fixed'relation with the first. named rotatable element, said means being adapted to be held in operative rela tion by theroll and released from such relation when the roll has been decreased in diameter a certain extent, and a spring connected with said second named element placed under tension by forward rotation of the roll and adapted to return the parts to original relation upon release of the roll.

In a paper roll holder adapted to rotatably support a paper roll, a rotatable element, a stop limiting the extent of rotation thereof in either direction, an element rotatable with the roll adapted to rotate the first named element, the second named element being also adapted for limited movement relative to the first named element, a spring controlled latch member or pawl forced to position by the roll when of full diameter to hold the two elements in fixed relation to rotate as a unit, said pawl being releasable to allow a relative movement of the two elements as the roll becomes reduced in diameter a certain extent in use, and a spring tending to resist forward rotation of the roll adapted to turn the parts to original position upon release of the roll.
In a paper roll holder, a bracket, a shaft adapted to rotatably support a paper roll, a limiting device rotatable on the shaft, a stop limiting the extent of rotation of said device in either direction, an element rotatable with the roll adapted to rotate the limiting element and having limited movement relative thereto, a pawl adapted to hold the two elements in fixed relation to rotate asa unit, said pawl being adapted to be held in operative relation by the roll when of certain diameter, a spring for forcing the pawl out of operative relation when the roll has been reduced in diameter to an extent suflicient to release the pawl, and a spring yieldably resisting forward rotation of the roll and adapted to return the roll and rotatable elements to original position upon release'of the roll.

In a paper roll holder, a shaft, an element rotatable on the shaft, a stop limiting the extent of rotation of said element in either direction, a device rotatable by the roll adapted to produce rotation of said element, said last named device having a fixed and a movable part for engaging the said element, said movable part being held in engagement with the said element by the roll when in position in the holder, and being positioned radially from the axis of rotation at a distance less than the radius of the full roll and adapted to move automatically out of engagement with the limiting device when the roll has been reduced in radigs to less than the said distance of the device from the center of rotation to allow the fixed part to engage said element, and a spring tending to resist forward rotation of the roll.

In a paper roll holder, means rotatable by the roll adapted to allow more than a single revolution thereof and limited in the extent of its rotation in either direction, means held by the roll when of certain diameter and released when the roll has been reduced in diameter a certain extent adapted to prevent more than a single revolution of the roll, and a spring yieldably resisting forward rotation of the roll.

In a paper roll holder, a bracket, a shaft for rotatably supporting a paper roll, a plurality of rotatable elements actuatable by rotation of the roll, one element being rotatable by the other, and being limited in the extent of its rotation, the two elements being adapted for limited relative movement, means held by the roll when of certain diameter and released when the roll has been reduced in diameter a certain extent adapted to cause rotation of the elements as a unit when held, and allow relative movement-of the elements when released, and a spring wound up by forward rotation of the roll adapted to return the parts to original position upon release of the roll.
9. In a paper roll holder, a bracket having arms, a shaft carried by one of the arms, the other of said arms being pivoted to the bracket and adapted to be detachably held by the shaft end, the roll being rotatably mounted on the shaft, an element rotatable on the shaft limited to not more than a single revolution in either direction, a second element rotatable on the shaft adapted to rotate the first named element and adapted for a limited movement relative thereto, a spring retracted device forced to position by the roll when of certain diameter to cause the elements to rotate as a unit and to allow relative movement when released upon the roll being reduced in diameter a certain extent, means for holding the roll in engagement with said device, and a spring tending to resist forward rotation of the roll and reverse the direction of rotation thereof upon release of the roll.
10. In a paper roll holder, a bracket having arms, a shaft secured to one of the arms, the other of said arms being pivoted to the bracket, means for detachably securing the shaft to the pivoted arm, an element rotatably mounted on the shaft adjacent the fixed end, and limited to not more than a single revolution in either direction, a second element rotatable on the shaft adjacent and adapted to rotate the first named element and also adapted for limited movement relative thereto, said last named element having a hub, a core for the roll, a metal end plate supported by the core apertured to engage the hub and to rotate said elements by rotation of the roll, a coiled spring attached to said second element and to the shaft normally under tension and adapted to yieldably resist forward rotation of the element and roll, a spring retracted device forced to position by the roll end when of certain diameter to cause the elements to rotate as a unit and to allow relative movement between the tWo elements on said hub tending to move the support when released upon the roll being reduced outwardly thereon and thus hold the roll in in diameter a certain extent, a hub on the engagement with the spring retracted de- 1 pivoted arm, a support for the core rovice substantially as described.
