To all whom 'it may concern L' Be it known that I, HARRY HAMILTON, a Vcitizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Lebanon, county of Boone, and State of Indiana, have inventedA certain new and useful Improvements inFlushing Apparatus for Water-Closets, ofwhich the following is a. specification.
My invention relates to improvements in flushing apparatus Vfor water-closets and has for its object the production of apparatus of this character which will be of improved construction and eliicient in operation.

Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a flush tank equipped with an operating device embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged central section of the water supply pipe which enters the flushing tank of the device, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on line yt/ of-Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings 5 indicates a flush pipe communicating at one end with a watercloset and at its upper end with the flushing tank 6. Communication between tank 6 and pipe 5 is controlled by a vertically movable valve 7 which is adapted, when in lowered position. to engage in a valve seat 8 provided at the upper end of pipe 5 in order to close the latter. The valve 7 is carried by a stem 9 which is mounted for free vertical movement, the lower end of said stem passing loosely through a guide member 10 which is fastened to an overflow pipe 11 arising from the bottom of the tank 6. The upper end of stem 9 is pivot-ally connected with one end of an oscillatory lever 12 which is fulcrumed intermediate its ends at 13 to a supporting arm 14 provided at the upper end of pipe 11. rllhe opposite end of lever 12 is pivotally connected with the upper end of a vertically movable rod 15 which is mounted axially in pipe 11, the lower end of said rod extending below the lower end of said pipe and being connected with actuating means. A suitable packing 16 is provided at the lower end of pipe 11 surrounding the rod 15. The lower end of overflow pipe 11 communicates with pipe 5 through a connecting piper17, the arrangement being such that water entering the upper open end of pipe 11 will flow from the lower end thereof through pipe 17 into the pipe 5 and thus prevent overflowingof tank 6. The
"point of entry of pipe 17 with the pipe 5 is positioned below the valvel 7 so lthat the latter iu no way affects the former which is always open and unobstructed. Also communicating with the bottom of tank 6 is a water supply pipe 18. Arranged centrally in the upper end of pipe 18 is a tubular stem 19 which is adapted for slight vertical movement. Fixed `to the lower end of stem 19 is a valve 20 adapted, when stem 1 9 is at its upper terminal lof movement, to engage in a valve seat 21provided at the lower end of a pipe 22 whichis secured centrallyin pipe 18 through the medium of a collar or reducing ring 23. An annular chamber 22 is thus formed in the member 22 surrounding the lower end portion of stem 19, the upper end of said chamber being closed by. packing cups 2a which are secured to stem 19 as clearly shown in Fig. Also secured to stemA 19 adjacent the upper end thereof lis a. cup which slidably engages against the inner surfacesA of the adjacent portion of pipe 18. Formed in the reducing ring 23 ,are passages 26 which permit ofthe `freeflow of water around member 22 for` impingement against the under side of cup 25. Formed in the stem 19 adjacent the lower end thereof are diametric openings 27 into which the water entering chamber 22', when valve 20 is lowered, is adapted to flow in the passage thereof to the discharge spout 28 which projects laterally from the upper end portion of stem 19. The upper end of pipe 18 is slotted at 29 to afford clearance for spout 28 during vertical movement of stem 19. Said stem is moved vertically as mentioned through the medium of an oscillatory lever 30 which is fulcrumed at 31 to a bracketV 32 arising from pipe 18, one end of said lever being pivotally connected with the upper end of rod 15.
With the construction set forth it will be seen that -upward movement of rod 15 will cause simultaneous upward rocking of the ends of levers 12 and 30 which are connected therewith. Such actuation of said levers wil-l cause downward movement of valve 7 to closing position and corresponding move 'nsA ment of valve 20 to open position. When this is done the pressure of the water main with which vthe pipe 18 is connected will force the water upwardly into chamber 22', whence the same will pass through openings 27 into pipe l2), passing upwardly in the latter and being discharged therefrom through the spout 28 into tank 6. When the rod l5 is released, the pressurev ofthe water supplied through pipelS against the under side of valve20 and cups 2li and 25 will automatically cause said valve to be movedvupwardly to closing position. Such movement of said valve will of course result in downward rocking of the end of lever 80 connected with rod l5 thereby effecting raising of valve`7. Also, with this arrangement, it will be seen that the flushing tank will be empty except whenthe water-closet is in use and springs, weights, or other additional mechanism for effecting automatic shutting off of the supply to the flushing tank and upward rocking of the water-closet seat obviated, the latter function being performed by the pressure ofthe water supplied to pipe 1S upon valve 20 and packing cups 2land 25.
While I have 'illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spiritV of the invention. I therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire toravail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A tank in combination with a water supply pipe leading to said tank; a valve controlling communication between said supply pipe and said tank; a tubular stem carry- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing ing said last mentioned valve at its lower end, saidstem ,being closed at its lower eX- tremity and having an opening at its upper end communicating with the interior of said tank, there being lateral openings adjacent the lowerextremity of said stem adapted upon lowering of said valve, to communicate with said supply pipe; means on said stem against which the water iiowing through said supply pipe is adapted to impinge for normally holding said supply pipe valve closed; and means for operating said valve, substantiallv as descrihed.
2. A tank in combination with a water supply pipe leading to said tank and projecting thereinto; a tubular stem mounted for reciprocation concentrically in said supply pipe and closed at its lower end; a concentric chamber also in said pipe registering with the lower end of said stem; a valve carried by said stem adapted,.when the latter is in elevated position7 to close the lower end of said chamber a'packing cup carried bv said stem fitting in the upper end of said chamberand a second packing cup on said stem adjacent the upper end thereof fitting in said supply pipe against which the water in passing through said supply pipe is adapted to impinge to normally hold said valve ,in closed position, there being openings upon said chamber to permit of free flow of water past said chamber, there being lateral openings adjacent the lower eX- tremity of said stem opening into said chamber; and means for operating said valve, substantially as described.
