Description

l o. F. nEsPAlN. ATTAHMENT FOR WRENCHES. APPLICATION FILED MAY 3l, I9I6 1,203,503. Patented 001;. 31,1915.
UNITED sTn as PATENT ostern.
OTTO FRANCIS DESPAIN, OF MIAMI, ARIZONA.
ATTACHMENT FOR VRENCHES.
Application led May 31, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OT'ro F. DnsPAiN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Miami, in the county of Gila and State of Arizona, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Wrenches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. j
My invention has for its object to provide an attachment for wrenches which is mounted on an adjustable wrenchjaw, and which engages the thread of the same for moving the said jaw, to remove therefrom grease and dirt.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification, in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar reference characters denote similar parts in all the views, in which* Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench provided with my improvement; Fig. 2 is a. sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view showing a modified form of the invention; Fig. 4 is an end view of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view illustrating the attachment shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that a wrench 10 4is provided of the usual construction having a xed jaw 11, a movable jaw 12, a shank 13, and a handle 14. The adjustable jaw 12 has a threaded orifice 15 in which meshes a feed screw 16 journaled in a bearing 17 in a projection 18, the feed screw 16 beingV provided with a milled thumb member 19 by which the feed screw may be readily rot-ated. In a wrench of this character, the feed screw 16 very often becomes lled with dirt and grease, which makes it difficult to adjust the jaw 12. I have, therefore, provided the jaw 12 with a finger 2O which engages the front of the feed screw 16, so that when the feed screw Specification of Letters Patent.

16 is turned to move the jaw 12to or from the fixed jaw 11, the finger 2O will move in the thread of the screw to remove therefrom dirt and grease.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 of the drawings, a finger 2Oa is mounted on a clamp 21 which has reslientsides 22 which normally embrace the adjustable jaw 12 between its shoulders 23. In this form of the invention, the finger 20a, mounted on the clamp 21, may be purchased separately from the wrench and may be readily attached thereto, the finger 20ZL in this construction following the thread of the feed screw 16 to remove therefrom dirt and grease.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a wrench having a jaw and a screw meshing in a threaded oriice in the jaw for adjusting the position of the jaw relatively to the body of the wrench, a thread cleaner mounted on the said jaw and having a finger engaging the thread of the screw to remove grease and dirt therefrom.
2. In combination with a wrench having a jaw and a screw meshing in a threaded oriice in the jaw for adjusting the position of the jaw relatively to the body of the wrench, a clamp for embracing the said jaw andprovided with a nger for engaging the thread of the screw to remove therefrom foreign matter.
3. In an attachment for wrenches, a clamp having sidesy for embracing a movable wrench jaw, and a finger extending from the clamp for disposal in the thread of a feed screw on the wrench.
Y 4. In an attachment for wrenches, a member having a linger for disposal in the thread of a feed screw, and resilient clampber to a jaw of a wrench.
OTTO FRANCIS DESPAIN.
