To all whom-it may concern:
Be it known that I, Dnirrsnr P. PARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Genoa, in the county of Hamilton and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to rail joints, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a relatively simple form of oint whereby the meeting ends of the track rails may be placed in an interlocking or cooperative position.
Another object of this invention is to form upon one end of each of the track-rails, a laterally disposed enlargement which is provided with a substantially elliptical shaped recess and a dovetailed recess, which extends downwardly through the laterally positioned extension along the inner face of the same,
at an incline to the horizontal surfaces of the rail, and to provide inclined inserting projections upon the opposite end of the rail for insertion in the recesses formed in the meeting end of a second rail. The inclining of the recesses prevents vertical movement of one rail independent of the other and when the rails are properly spiked to the ties, a non-spreading joint is provided, which eliminates independent movement of one rail with respect to the other.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like nd corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the meeting ends of complementary rails of railway. The rail 2 is pro ided ith ala era ly disposed e11- largemcnt or extens on 3, theen s of Which are cut at angles with respect to the horizon tal surfaces of the rails, as is clearly shown at =1. The projection 3 is also provided with a dovetailed recess 5, which communicates with the inner face 6 of the projection and extends downwardly through the projection at an incline with respect to the horizontal faces of the extension. The sides or edges 7 and 8 of the mouth of the recess 5 converge as they extend downwardly, constricting the lowermost portion of the open mouth of the recess 5, as is clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings. A substantially elliptical shaped recess 9 is formed in the extension 3 and communicates with the innor face 6 of the same. The substantially elliptical shaped recess 9 extends downwardly through the extension at an incline to the horizontal plane and substantially parallel to the incline of the recess 5. The rail 2 terminates in a shoulder 10, which is positioned a short distance inwardly from the innermost corner of the recess 5, and the extension 3 projects outwardly from the shoulder 10, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The rail 1, has the inner surface of its end 12 flattened for facial abutment with the face 6 of the extension 3. A substantially elliptical shaped projection 14 is formed upon the inner face 15 of the rail 1 and is adapted for seating in the recess 9. A dove tailed extension 16 is also formed upon the face 15. and is disposed at an angle or incline to the horizontal faces of the rail 1,
for snugly fitting within the dovetailed recess 5. The end 17 of the rail 1 is cut inclined for snugly fitting against the shoulder 10 when the meeting ends of the complementary rails l and 2 are connected, as is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
To connect the meeting ends of the rails 1 and 2, it is necessary to lift the rail labove the rail 2 and position the projections or extensions 1 1 and 16 above the recesses 9 and 5, respectively, after which the rail 1 is lowered. The extensions 14 and 16 traveling downwardly in the recesses 9 and 5 will move the rail 1 longitudinally with respect to the rail 2, and when the upper and lower surfaces of the rails 1 and 2 are lying flush with each other, the meeting ends of the rails will be connected, by the insertion of the extensions 14 and 16 into the recesses 9 and 5, for preventing accidental independent,

In reducing the invention to practice certain minor features of construction, combi-- nation and'arrangement of parts may necessitate alterations to which the patentee is entitled, provided such alterations are comprehended Within the scope of what is claimed.
What is claimed is:
In a rail joint, a track rail having an extension formed upon one end of the same and projecting longitudinally beyond the end of the rail, a dovetailed recess formed in said extension and communicating with the inner face thereof said recess being disposed at an angle to the horizontal faces of said extension, said extension being pro-' vided with a substantially elliptical shaped recess. formed therein and communicating with the inner face of the extension, said substantially elliptical recess being positioned at an incline with respect to the horizontal faces of said extension and substantially parallel to said dovetailed extension, a complementary rail having one end flattened for facial abutment with the inner surface of said extension, a" dovetailed extension formed upon the flattened inner surface of said complementary rail and adapted for seating in said dovetailed extension, a substantially elliptical projection formed upon the flattened inner surface of said comple- V mentary rail and adapted for insertion vin sald substantially elliptical recess, said elliptical extension and said dovetailed extension being positioned at an incline with re- DEMPSEY P.
