To all whom t may concern.

Be it known that l, ASTON MALLY, a subject 4of the Emperor of uStria-'Iungary, who have declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the Vnited States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Beds, of which thefollowing is a specification.

My invention relates to beds, and more specifically to a bed designed for use especially for invalids.

The object of my invention is the production of a bed of the character mentioned which will be of durable and economical construction and one which will aiford great ease and comfort to the occupant of the bed.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention will he best understood'by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,

The preferred form ofl construction. illustrated in the drawings, comprises a bed 10 the portion of which forward of the head piece 11 thereof being of conventional construction. Coperating with the panel 13 .re counterbalance weights 15 mounted for i'rec vertical movement in two of the vertical hollow bars of said head piece, said counterbalance weights being connected with the lower ends of cords 16 which pass upwardly over channel pulleys 17 and lare connected at their upper ends with the lower end of panel 13, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The construction is such that said counterbalancc weights are adapted to vicldingly hold said panel at its upper terminal of movement permitting, however, of lowering of the same to close said opening 12, as shown in Fig. 3. The pulleys 17 are inclosed in housings 18 and the counterbalance weights 15 are provided at their opposite ends with disks 19 of leather or other suitable material which serve as buffers to prevent rattling of said` counterbalance weights during vertical movement thereof, as will he readily understood.

Arranged at the rearward side of the head piece 11. at the lower end thereof, are vertically extending posts or supports 20, said posts being mounted for vertical adjustment in guide straps 21 and Q2. the former of which are secured to the lower horizontal bar of Isaid head piece. and the latter of which are mounted upon support ing straps Q3 which arise from said crossI piece, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and Q. Set screws 24 cooperate with the guide straps 21 and 22 to lock the members 20 in positionsv oE vertical adjustment. Also coperating with members 20 are pins 25 adapted for engagement with spaced slots provided inv said posts. the pins 25 being adapted for contact with the upper sides 'of straps Q2 in order to serve as further means of holding said posts in positions of vertical adjustment.

The lower end of the back rest rests upon the upper side of the mattress or clothing of the bed and in order to permit of ready movenufnt of the hach rest relative to the mattress or hed clothing engaged. the lower '30 are provided with rollers 40. The back rest. when in use. projects through the opening 12 in the head piece of the hed. and when not in use. adapted to be rocked r alrwardly through said opening to a position behind said head piece. Cooperating with the bed is also a supporting element or table consisting of arms l2 rigidly connected at their rearward ends hy a cross bar l2. said arms having laterally projecting trunnions 43 at their rearward ends which pivotally engage with slots il formed in the posts 2U. Forward rocking of the arms l2 is limited by means of stops l5 which are adapted to engage against the upper ends of posts 20. the arrangement being such that when the stops 45 are in engagement with said posts, the forward ends of arms 42 will he substantially horizontally disposed.

The end piecesl lT are adjustably connected with the arms l2 by means of outwardly projecting pins 4S anchored in said end pieces 4T. the outer ends of said pins projecting through velongated slots l!) formed in the arms l2. lland wheels are threaded upon the outer ends of pins l@ in order to ell'ect clamping of the end pieces -lT in positions of pivotal ad justment. Rollers 3l are provided upon the pins 4S for engagement with the longitudinal edges of slots lrso as to alleviate fric tion inthe shifting of the table top relative to supporting arms 4i). The table thus formed conveniently positioned for the occupant of the bed and affords Considerahle convenience in eating or where it is desired to support articles in front of the occupant. The leaf 4G is provided with pivoted fingers adapted to be swung upwardly to the position shown in Fig. 7 in order to constitute a rest for books, as will be readily understood. The upper side of leaf 4G provided with recesses 53 in order to accommodate the fingers 42 when the latter are not-in use. The pivotal adjustment which is afforded the end members 4T is of course of advantage in the use of the device as a book'rest since it a'ords adjustment of the hook to anyY angle desired. The leaf 46 is held in folded position by means of a spring dctent 54 and the table top is locked against vertical tilting by means of a laterally projecting finger 55 provided at the front end of one of the end pieces 4T which is adapted for engagement in a recess 56 provided in the corresponding end of the adjacent supporting member ai).

`While I have illustrated and described the preferred forms of construction for carrying my invention into effect, these are capable of`variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish t o be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire 'to avail myself of such Variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

- Having described my invention what I 'claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a bed comprising a frame having a head piece, said head piece having an opening; a supporting element mounted on said frame for vertical adjustment; an auxiliary bed member pivotally mounted upon saidsupporting element so 'as to permit of movement thereof through said opening to and 'from operative position; and a removable panel for closing said opening, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a bed comprising a frame having a head piece; a pair of vertically adjustable supports mounted on said frame adj acent said head piece; means for locking said supports in positions of vertical adjustment; an auxiliary bed member pivotally mounted upon said supports so as to permit of swinging of said member to and from position over said bed; and vertically adjustable blocks on said .supports for limiting swinging of said member in one direction, substantially as described.
