and State of Test Virginia, have invented certa'n new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Forming Corrugated Elbows, of which the following is a specification. a

The mechanism by means of which the parts composing the present invention are actuated is substantially identical throughout with thatdisclosed in my pending application for patent for elbow forming machine, filed March 4, 1916, Serial No. 82,0i0, wherein the manufacturer of plain, or uncorrugated, elbows is provided for. Therefore, the description herein given will be limited to the specific parts involved in the present invention, reference being had to said prior application for a complete understanding of the details of construction of theamechanism whereby said parts are actu= ate Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a stationary horizontal hollow mandrel which has an eccentrically disposed longitudinal bore within which is mounted a rotatable sleeve 2. Said sleeve is also provided with an eccentrically disposed longitudinal bore in which is rotatably mounted'a shaft 3. The front ends of'said sleeve and shaft are flush with the corresponding end of the mandrel, and extending forward from the front end of said shaft is an integral wrist 4 having an eccentric disposition with respect to the axis .of said shaft. The location of said wrist is such that, while it is eccentrio with respect to said shaft, it is concentric with respect to theaxis of the mandrel when the said parts occupy their normal positions. Loosely-mounted, or having free rotary movement on said wrist, and located close against the flush ends of the mandrel, sleeve and shaft, is a crimping disk 5 having a less diameterthan said mandrel and the periphery ofuwhich is of regular scalloped outline, the number of scallops corresponding with the number of corrugations in the tube. Said disk has its peripheral edge beveled and is designed to swing throughout an eccentric path with the travel of the wrist for forming in the tube or tube blank 6 outwardly pressed crimps 7 which shall plaits, as shown Keyed upon the wrist 4 close in front of the disk 5 and disposed in an'eccentric .position with respect to the latter is a relatively smaller circular wheelor disk 9, and freely rotatable upon said disk 9 is a ring 10 which is disposed eccentrically with respect to said disk 9 concentrically with respect to the disk 5. Said disk .9 follows the eccentric movements of the disk 5 as the latter is thrust outward for forming the crimps in the tube blank ,6 and is designed toengage the inner surface of said blank adjacent to the portion of the latter which is being acted upon by said disk 5, and thus to cooperate with the outer blank-em bracing jaws for preventing distortion or buckling of the blank at points directly in front of the disk 5 during the crimp-forming operation. Since the ring 10 is freely rotatable, it at all times occupies a position wherein its heavier side is lowermost, as shown in Fig, 1,
The eater surface at the mandrel 1 is corrugated longitudinally to correspond with the corrugations desired for the elbow, and the tube-blank G is in like manner corrugated prior to its mounting upon the mandrel, as shown in Fig. 3.
Normally disposed in embracing relation to the blank adjacent to the front end of the mandrel are two pairs of complemental aw sections 11 and 12, the former being located forward of and the latter rearward of the position in which the crimp 7 is formed in the blank by the action of the crimping disk 5, said jaw sections corresponding to those described in my said pending application, except that the inner faces thereof are shaped to correspond with the corrugated surface to be embraced thereby. The segmental crimp-flattening jaws 14 correspond with those disclosed in my said pending application, except that the tubeembracing surfaces of said jaws are shaped to correspond with the corrugated form of the blank, as shown in Fig. 6.
As hereinbefore indicated, the operations of the various parts are identical with those of the corresponding parts in my pending application, to which reference is made for a full description of said operations.
As will be readily understood, the disk 5 is caused by rotation of the sleeve 2 and shaft 3 to traverse an eccentric path relative to the mandrel 1, wherein its beveled peripheral edge is projected outward beyond the periphery of the mandrel, producing the outwardly pressed V-shaped crimp 7 shown in Fig. 1, said crimp having its greatest dimension at the uppermost part of the blank and gradually diminishing to the lowermost part. In traveling throughout its said eccentric path, said disk 5 does not itself rotate except to the-relatively slight extent which is permitted by the scallops thereof interengaging with the corrugations of the blank.
What is claimed is 1. In a machine for forming corrugated sheet-metal elbows, a mandrel having a longitudinally corrugated exterior and having an eccentrically disposed longitudinal bore,
a sleeve rotatably mounted within said bore, said sleeve having an eccentrically disposed bore, a shaft rotatably mounted in the lastmentioned bore, said sleeve. and shaft having their front ends flush with the end of said mandrel, an eccentrically disposed wrist carried by said shaft, a crimping disk loosely mounted on said wrist, said disk having a scalloped periphery, a pair of pivoted jaws embracing the front end of said mandrel, and a second pair of pivoted jaws disposed in front of the position of said disk and adapted to assume embracing relation to a tube blank carried by said mandrel, said jaws having their inner faces shaped to conform to the surface of said blank, the foremost of said pairs of jaws being adapted for rearward swinging movement for inclining rearwardly crimps formed in said blank.
2. In a machine for forming corrugated sheet-metal elbows, a mandrel having a longitudinally corrugated exterior and having an eccentrically disposed longitudinal bore, a sleeve rotatably mounted within said bore, said sleeve having an eccentrically disposed bore, a shaft rotatably mounted in the lastmentioned bore, said sleeve and shaft having their front ends flush with the endof said mandrel, an eccentrically disposed wrist carried by said shaft, a crimping disk loosely mounted on said wrist, said disk having a scalloped periphery, a pair of pivoted jaws embracing the front end of said mandrel, and a second pair of pivoted jaws disposed in front of the position of said disk and adapted to assume embracing relation to a tube blank carried by said mandrel, said jaws having their innerv faces shaped to conform to the surface of said blank, the foremost of said pairs of jaws being adapted.
